Jake Peavy, P, San Diego PadresThursday 11/15, 10:53 PM CT
Jake Peavy captured the NL's Cy Young Award in dominating fashion Thursday, snagging all 32 first-place votes. Peavy was trailed in the voting by Brandon Webb, Brad Penny, Aaron Harang and Carlos Zambrano.
Alex Rodriguez, 3B, New York YankeesThursday 11/15, 10:49 PM CT
Alex Rodriguez and the Yankees have agreed to the outline of a $275 million, 10-year contract, a deal that potentially would allow him to earn millions more if he sets the career home-run record, the AP reports. "The meeting was a final get-together," Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said. "He wanted to make sure myself and my brother knew that he was sincere and serious." The Yankees still must draft the agreement with Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras. Asked whether the only remaining details were putting the deal on paper, Steinbrenner responded: "pretty much so."
Barry Bonds, OF, San Francisco GiantsThursday 11/15, 4:30 PM CT
Barry Bonds was indicted Thursday on perjury and obstruction of justice charges. The indictment culminates a four-year federal investigation into whether he lied under oath to a grand jury, according to the AP. "During the criminal investigation, evidence was obtained including positive tests for the presence of anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing substances for Bonds and other athletes," the indictment reads. We'll give you more details about Bonds' situation when more is known, but obviously this will affect how teams pursue the free agent outfielder.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesThursday 11/15, 1:11 PM CT
FoxSports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Mariano Rivera has not accepted the Yankees' three-year, $45 million offer, because he's looking for a fourth year. The closer is wanting the same contract length as Jorge Posada and Billy Wagner have received. Rivera has told his agents to shop him around, but it still seems unlikely he'll receive a guaranteed fourth year, considering he turns 38 later this month.
Carl Crawford, LF, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 11/15, 12:58 PM CT
The Cubs are apparently intent in trying to pry Carl Crawford away from the Rays, offering a package of players that includes lefty Rich Hill and reliever Carlos Marmol, according to the Boston Globe. The idea of Tampa trading Crawford right now is silly, as they have control over him through 2010. And in the event they did decide to deal him, they could surely land a more enticing package.
Torii Hunter, CF, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 11/15, 11:17 AM CT
Torii Hunter's agent said Monday's meeting with the Rangers went well, but contract talks are still in the preliminary stages, according to the Dallas Morning News. It was a good solid meeting," Larry Reynolds said. "It wasn't anything we weren't expecting to hear. It was a chance for Torii and Jon Daniels to get together and know one another. I think the Rangers got a good opportunity to see what kind of person he is. He is a quality individual." Hunter lives just 50 miles from Arlington, so the Rangers would be a good fit, but he's expected to entertain several offers. In addition to the Rangers, he's already met with the White Sox and Royals.
Kenny Rogers, P, Detroit TigersThursday 11/15, 11:14 AM CT
The Rangers have expressed interest in signing Kenny Rogers, but they've made it clear that they'll do so only if the veteran lefty issues an apology to the organization for his altercation with a reporter back in 2005, according to the Dallas Morning News. "He's got to take care of some unfinished business," owner Tom Hicks said. "He's got to apologize." After the incident occurred several years ago, Rogers apologized to the fans, but never to the club. Rogers is seeking a one-year deal worth about $10 million, although Detroit still seems like his most likely destination.
Alex Rodriguez, 3B, New York YankeesThursday 11/15, 10:57 AM CT
Alex Rodriguez is discussing a deal with the Yankees that would net him $275 million over 10 years, according to Newsday. There were reports that the Yankees would only meet with A-Rod if agent Scott Boras wasn't present, but the Players Union wouldn't allow that, and the Yanks have since stated they're willing to work with Boras. Initially, it appeared to be longshot that Rodriguez would return to the Yankees; now it's a longshot that he doesn't.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxThursday 11/15, 10:52 AM CT
Mike Lowell has received several four-year, $55-60 million offers from various clubs (including the Yankees, Angels and Braves), but the Red Sox are still standing firm with their three-year, $36 million proposal, according to the Boston Herald. In addition, there are also reports the Yankees would like to sign Lowell to play first base (assuming they re-sign A-Rod). It's unclear exactly how willing Lowell is to leave Boston, but it appears he's going to have to take significantly less money if he wants to remain with the Red Sox.
Ramon Hernandez, C, Baltimore OriolesThursday 11/15, 10:48 AM CT
The Mets recently expressed interest in Ramon Hernandez, but the Orioles were asking for a high-end prospect in return, which is more than the Mets were willing to give up, according to the Baltimore Sun. As things stand now, it looks like the Mets plan to sign both Ramon Castro and Yorvit Torrealba to split duties behind the plate.
Erik Bedard, P, Seattle MarinersThursday 11/15, 10:46 AM CT
The Orioles spent part of last week's GM meetings listening to offers for Erik Bedard. However, the club's focus has now changed, as president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail is now looking to sign the lefty to a contract extension, according to the Baltimore Sun. The O's haven't completely dismissed the idea of trading their ace; they just want to explore what it would take to sign him long-term before possibly dealing him.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, Colorado RockiesThursday 11/15, 10:43 AM CT
The Mets have reportedly offered free agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba a three-year deal worth in the vicinity of $15 million. Torrealba is expected to make a decision today whether or not to accept the offer, according to the New York Post. The $15 million figure is reportedly roughly double the amount the Rockies are offering, so it would be surprising if Torrealba doesn't end up in Queens.
