Jonathan Albaladejo, P, New York YankeesWednesday 12/5, 7:48 PM CT
The Washington Nationals and New York Yankees traded right arms on Wednesday, with the Nats receiving starter Tyler Clippard in exchange for reliever Jonathan Albaladejo . Both pitchers spent time in triple-A and on the major league roster last season.
Jose Guillen, RF, Kansas City RoyalsWednesday 12/5, 3:47 PM CT
The Players Association is negotiating with MLB officials on a possible 10- to 15-day suspension for Jose Guillen for his reported involvement in the purchase of steroids and HGH. The San Francisco Chronicle reported last month that Guillen bought nearly $20,000 worth of steroids and HGH from 2003 through 2005, according to ESPN.com. Guillen just signed a three-year, $36 million deal with Kansas City yesterday.
Francisco Liriano, P, Minnesota TwinsWednesday 12/5, 12:54 PM CT
Francisco Liriano is progressing well in his rehab from Tommy John surgery, according to the AP. "I saw him in the Instructional League and he is throwing free and easy," Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said Wednesday at the Winter Meetings. "We know it's a process, but he's progressing fine. We'll have to see where he is (during spring training). The ball is popping out of his hand." Liriano, who missed all of the 2007 season, should be ready for spring, but a setback could alter his return date.
Buck Coats, LF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 12/5, 12:35 PM CT
The Blue Jays acquired Buck Coats from the Reds Wednesday for a player to be named or cash. Coats played in 20 games for the Reds in '07 after being claimed off waivers from the Cubs. He hit .206 in 34 at-bats.
Scott Rolen, 3B, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 12/5, 11:42 AM CT
Not only have talks between the Cardinals and Brewers regarding Scott Rolen stalled, but St. Louis GM John Mozeliak went as far to say as he didn't think Rolen would be going anywhere. "As we sit here now, I would expect Scott Rolen to be part of our team for the 2008 season," Mozeliak said to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. With a deal with Milwaukee all but ruled out, the Cards are reportedly talking with the Dodgers and Giants about Rolen.
Raul Ibanez, LF, Seattle MarinersWednesday 12/5, 11:28 AM CT
The Cubs are still most interested in bringing in Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome to play right field, but if that doesn't work out, they could pursue a trade for Raul Ibanez, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The team is desperate for a left-handed hitting outfielder, and although Ibanez is a poor defender, he would fit nicely in the middle of their lineup.
Cliff Lee, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 12/5, 10:54 AM CT
Cliff Lee's agent, Darek Braunecker, believes the hurler will be traded sometime this offseason, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "If you consider all those guys to be similar, Cliff is their most expendable guy," said Braunecker. "I'm expecting them to move him." The Cardinals are one team that's already expressed interest in Lee, and it's possible a deal could get done involving Anthony Reyes.
Alex Rios, RF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 12/5, 10:37 AM CT
It appears the Blue Jays are open to trading Alex Rios, and the Toronto Sun reports they've talked to the Giants about a possible deal for Matt Cain or Tim Lincecum. Talks between the two clubs haven't progressed very far, but this would be an offer the Giants would at least have to consider.
Erik Bedard, P, Seattle MarinersWednesday 12/5, 10:20 AM CT
The Orioles are no closer to trading Erik Bedard now than they were on Monday, according to the Baltimore Sun. "We really are not significantly different than where we were [Monday] at this time," MacPhail said. "Our philosophy is pretty simple. We think we have a pretty good understanding of what is equitable for certain guys, and when we get there, great. Until we get there, we'll stay where we are. It's really a simple equation." If the O's don't wind up trading their ace, it's possible they'll re-visit signing Bedard to an extension this spring.
