Jonathan Albaladejo, P, New York YankeesWednesday 12/5, 7:48 PM CT
The Washington Nationals and New York Yankees traded right arms on Wednesday, with the Nats receiving starter Tyler Clippard in exchange for reliever Jonathan Albaladejo . Both pitchers spent time in triple-A and on the major league roster last season.
Tyler Clippard, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 12/5, 7:47 PM CT
The Washington Nationals and New York Yankees traded right arms on Wednesday, with the Nats receiving starter Tyler Clippard in exchange for reliever Jonathan Albaladejo. Both pitchers spent time in triple-A and on the major league roster last season.
Jose Guillen, RF, Kansas City RoyalsWednesday 12/5, 3:47 PM CT
The Players Association is negotiating with MLB officials on a possible 10- to 15-day suspension for Jose Guillen for his reported involvement in the purchase of steroids and HGH. The San Francisco Chronicle reported last month that Guillen bought nearly $20,000 worth of steroids and HGH from 2003 through 2005, according to ESPN.com. Guillen just signed a three-year, $36 million deal with Kansas City yesterday.
Jorge Cantu, 3B, Florida MarlinsWednesday 12/5, 3:29 PM CT
The Reds released Jorge Cantu Wednesday. He hit .298 in 57 at-bats for the Reds after being traded there by Tampa Bay at last year's deadline. Cantu is just a few years removed from a 28-homer, 117-RBI season and will likely find someone willing to take a chance on him, though he might not find a starting job.
Francisco Liriano, P, Minnesota TwinsWednesday 12/5, 12:54 PM CT
Francisco Liriano is progressing well in his rehab from Tommy John surgery, according to the AP. "I saw him in the Instructional League and he is throwing free and easy," Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said Wednesday at the Winter Meetings. "We know it's a process, but he's progressing fine. We'll have to see where he is (during spring training). The ball is popping out of his hand." Liriano, who missed all of the 2007 season, should be ready for spring, but a setback could alter his return date.
Buck Coats, LF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 12/5, 12:35 PM CT
The Blue Jays acquired Buck Coats from the Reds Wednesday for a player to be named or cash. Coats played in 20 games for the Reds in '07 after being claimed off waivers from the Cubs. He hit .206 in 34 at-bats.
Glendon Rusch, P, Colorado RockiesWednesday 12/5, 12:04 PM CT
The Padres are close to reaching terms with Glendon Rusch, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Rusch missed the 2007 season after developing a blood clot in his lung but is attempting a comeback.
Dan Haren, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 12/5, 11:57 AM CT
A deal is far from imminent, but the D'Backs are expected to make a strong run at A's ace Dan Haren. Not surprisingly, Oakland GM Billy Beane is expected to ask for a lot in return for Haren, but the D'Backs are one team that has the prospects to trade, according to the Arizona Republic. Minor league outfielder Carlos Gonzalez would likely be the first player included in any deal, but Arizona may have to give up as many as four youngsters to complete a trade.
Josh Kinney, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 12/5, 11:48 AM CT
Josh Kinney, who missed the entire 2007 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, is not expected to be ready to pitch until May or June. Kinney suffered a setback in his rehab when he fractured his right arm while exercising in August, but at the time the team said Kinney should still be fine by spring training, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Obviously that is no longer the case.
Scott Rolen, 3B, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 12/5, 11:42 AM CT
Not only have talks between the Cardinals and Brewers regarding Scott Rolen stalled, but St. Louis GM John Mozeliak went as far to say as he didn't think Rolen would be going anywhere. "As we sit here now, I would expect Scott Rolen to be part of our team for the 2008 season," Mozeliak said to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. With a deal with Milwaukee all but ruled out, the Cards are reportedly talking with the Dodgers and Giants about Rolen.
Raul Ibanez, LF, Seattle MarinersWednesday 12/5, 11:28 AM CT
The Cubs are still most interested in bringing in Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome to play right field, but if that doesn't work out, they could pursue a trade for Raul Ibanez, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The team is desperate for a left-handed hitting outfielder, and although Ibanez is a poor defender, he would fit nicely in the middle of their lineup.
Tadahito Iguchi, 2B, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 12/5, 11:19 AM CT
The Phillies released Tadahito Iguchi last month, but now they are very interested in re-signing him and sticking him at third base. There's just one problem. Since the Phils released Iguchi after the season, by rule they are not allowed to re-sign him until May 15. But the team could secure a waiver from the commissioner's office that allows Iguchi to rejoin the team immediately, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Iguchi's agent, Rocky Hall, thinks there's a 50-50 chance of the Phils getting the waiver. "Because he's a veteran player coming over from Japan, that might be able to take place," Hall said. "I haven't had a player like this, but it has happened before." Iguchi will sign elsewhere if the waiver is not obtained.
Willie Harris, LF, Washington NationalsWednesday 12/5, 11:08 AM CT
The Braves designated Willie Harris for assignment Tuesday. The move was needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Omar Infante and Will Ohman, two players that Atlanta acquired via trade from the Cubs. It's possible the Braves could bring back Harris with a minor league deal if he's not picked up by another team, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Chris Gomez, SS, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 12/5, 11:01 AM CT
The Pirates signed veteran utilityman Chris Gomez to a one-year deal Wednesday. Gomez hit .297 with a home run and 21 RBI in 92 combined games with Baltimore and Cleveland in '07.
Cliff Lee, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 12/5, 10:54 AM CT
Cliff Lee's agent, Darek Braunecker, believes the hurler will be traded sometime this offseason, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "If you consider all those guys to be similar, Cliff is their most expendable guy," said Braunecker. "I'm expecting them to move him." The Cardinals are one team that's already expressed interest in Lee, and it's possible a deal could get done involving Anthony Reyes.
Alex Rios, RF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 12/5, 10:37 AM CT
It appears the Blue Jays are open to trading Alex Rios, and the Toronto Sun reports they've talked to the Giants about a possible deal for Matt Cain or Tim Lincecum. Talks between the two clubs haven't progressed very far, but this would be an offer the Giants would at least have to consider.
Johan Santana, P, New York MetsWednesday 12/5, 10:29 AM CT
No Johan Santana deal has been completed yet, but the Red Sox and Twins talked through the night and into the morning. The latest offer on the table is thought to be Jon Lester, Coco Crisp and some combination of Ryan Kalish, Justin Masterson and Jed Lowrie, according to the Boston Herald. At this point, the Red Sox are the clear front runners to acquire Santana, although the Yankees could conceivably get back into the mix, and the Angels may want to make a late run at Santana now that they've missed out of Miguel Cabrera.
Erik Bedard, P, Seattle MarinersWednesday 12/5, 10:20 AM CT
The Orioles are no closer to trading Erik Bedard now than they were on Monday, according to the Baltimore Sun. "We really are not significantly different than where we were [Monday] at this time," MacPhail said. "Our philosophy is pretty simple. We think we have a pretty good understanding of what is equitable for certain guys, and when we get there, great. Until we get there, we'll stay where we are. It's really a simple equation." If the O's don't wind up trading their ace, it's possible they'll re-visit signing Bedard to an extension this spring.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 12/5, 9:11 AM CT
David Riske signed a three-year, $13 million deal with the Brewers Wednesday. The contract includes incentives that could push the value of the package to slightly more than $20 million.
