Gary Matthews Jr., LF, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 12/6, 4:22 PM CT
The commissioner's office has announced that it has concluded its investigations Gary Matthews, stating there was insufficient evidence to warrant a suspension.
Jay Marshall, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 12/6, 4:16 PM CT
The A's claimed Jay Marshall off waivers from the Red Sox Thursday. Marshall, who posted a 6.43 ERA in 51 relief appearances in 2007, will compete for a middle relief job in Oakland's bullpen next spring.
Jose Guillen, RF, Kansas City RoyalsThursday 12/6, 4:14 PM CT
Jose Guillen has been suspended 15 days by Major League baseball for violating the sport's drug program, according to the AP. The slugger was linked in media reports to the purchase of human growth hormone. Guillen, who recently inked a three-year contract with Kansas City, will begin serving the suspension at the beginning of the 2008 season.
Jason Bay, LF, Boston Red SoxThursday 12/6, 12:02 PM CT
The Pirates may very well trade Jason Bay this offseason, but it won't be to the Indians. When asked if trade talks with the Tribe regarding Bay are dead, Pirates GM Neal Huntington replied with a terse, firm, "yes," according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Bay is coming off a down year and it would probably be in the Bucs' best interest to hang on to him.
Gary Matthews Jr., LF, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 12/6, 11:49 AM CT
Gary Matthews received most of his at-bats in the 4th and 5th slots last year, but manager Mike Scioscia plans to use the outfielder at the top of the lineup in 2008, either batting leadoff or second, according to the LA Daily News. "Obviously, Vlad will be the keystone," Scioscia said. "It will be a question of whether we are setting the table enough. Whether teams are pitching to Vlad or not, you have to create (run-scoring) opportunities. The whole lineup is contingent on how the pieces fit and whether we're setting the table enough for Vlad or we need to adjust." With the acquisition of Torii Hunter this offseason, Matthews will rotate the corner outfield positions next year.
Jason Bay, LF, Boston Red SoxThursday 12/6, 11:13 AM CT
Once the Tigers acquired Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis from the Marlins, there were reports the Indians picked up their trade talks with Pittsburgh regarding Jason Bay. However, the Indians deny their interest in Bay has been renewed, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. It's still possible the Pirates will trade Bay this offseason, but this really isn't the best time to trade him, considering he's coming off a down year.
Tim Lahey, P, Minnesota TwinsThursday 12/6, 11:10 AM CT
The Rays sold Tim Lahey, this year's top Rule 5 pick, to the Cubs Thursday, according to the Tampa Tribune. Lahey will attempt to make the Cubs as a middle reliever this spring.
Brian Roberts, 2B, Baltimore OriolesThursday 12/6, 10:55 AM CT
A deal still is not imminent, but the Cubs have continued their pursuit of Brian Roberts, according to the Baltimore Sun. Two players mentioned in a possible deal are Sean Gallagher and Matt Murton. In the event the O's trade Roberts, they would likely try to sign free agent Tadahito Iguchi to play second base.
Chris Shelton, 1B, Texas RangersThursday 12/6, 10:35 AM CT
Chris Shelton was shipped to the Rangers Wednesday in exchange for Freddy Guzman. Shelton, who hit .273 with 16 homers for Detroit in 2006, spent all of his time in Triple-A this past year, batting .269 with 14 homers in 139 games. The Rangers don't have any other options at first base right now, so Shelton could win an everyday job if they don't bring in anyone else.
Freddy Guzman, CF, Detroit TigersThursday 12/6, 10:31 AM CT
The Tigers acquired Freddy Guzman from the Rangers Wednesday in exchange for Chris Shelton. Guzman hit .269 with 56 steals in 133 games at Triple-A last year, and he could compete for a utility role with Detroit next season.
