The commissioner's office has announced that it has concluded its investigations Gary Matthews, stating there was insufficient evidence to warrant a suspension.
Augie Ojeda, 2B, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 12/6, 4:18 PM CT
The Diamondbacks avoided arbitration with Augie Ojeda and signed him to a one-year contract Thursday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Ojeda filled in at second base for Arizona last year after Orlando Hudson went down with an injury, hitting .274 with a .354 OBP in 113 at-bats. He'll serve in a reserve role in 2008.
Jay Marshall, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 12/6, 4:16 PM CT
The A's claimed Jay Marshall off waivers from the Red Sox Thursday. Marshall, who posted a 6.43 ERA in 51 relief appearances in 2007, will compete for a middle relief job in Oakland's bullpen next spring.
Jay Gibbons, LF, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 12/6, 4:14 PM CT
Jay Gibbons has been suspended 15 days by Major League baseball for violating the sport's drug program, according to the AP. He was linked in media reports to the purchase of human growth hormone. Gibbons will begin serving the suspension at the beginning of the 2008 season.
Jose Guillen, RF, Kansas City RoyalsThursday 12/6, 4:14 PM CT
Jose Guillen has been suspended 15 days by Major League baseball for violating the sport's drug program, according to the AP. The slugger was linked in media reports to the purchase of human growth hormone. Guillen, who recently inked a three-year contract with Kansas City, will begin serving the suspension at the beginning of the 2008 season.
Jonathan Meloan, P, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 12/6, 12:26 PM CT
Jonathan Meloan could get a shot at a place in the Dodgers' starting rotation in spring training, according to the LA Times. Meloan was a starter in his college days at Arizona, but he's started just nine games in his professional career. The reason why he was moved to the bullpen in the first place was because of his max-out delivery and durability issues, so it would seem like an odd choice to make him a starter again after he's excelled in a relief role in the minors.
Wily Mo Pena, LF, Washington NationalsThursday 12/6, 12:25 PM CT
Wily Mo Pena signed a two-year extension with the Nationals on Thursday, according to the Sports Ticker. He will receive $2 million in 2008, and he has a mutual option for 2009; the Nats will have a $5 million club option for the slugger in '09, and Pena will receive a $2 million player option if they decline it. Right now, Pena figures to see the majority of the playing time in left field next year, but it's possible he won't play every day, depending on what the Nats want to do with Elijah Dukes.
Aaron Boone, 1B, Washington NationalsThursday 12/6, 12:21 PM CT
Aaron Boone signed a one-year contract with the Nationals on Thursday. Boone played in just 69 games last year due to knee surgery, and he's expected to serve in a utility role in Washington next year.
Jason Bay, LF, Boston Red SoxThursday 12/6, 12:02 PM CT
The Pirates may very well trade Jason Bay this offseason, but it won't be to the Indians. When asked if trade talks with the Tribe regarding Bay are dead, Pirates GM Neal Huntington replied with a terse, firm, "yes," according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Bay is coming off a down year and it would probably be in the Bucs' best interest to hang on to him.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 12/6, 11:55 AM CT
The Brewers don't anticipate acquiring an established closer before spring training, which mean they're likely to head into the season with Derrick Turnbow as their ninth-inning man. "Derrick probably has a head-start on it because he has done it before and has been an all-star closer," manager Ned Yost told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Turnbow has had success in the closer role in the past, but he's also been prone to wildness and big innings.
Gary Matthews Jr., LF, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 12/6, 11:49 AM CT
Gary Matthews received most of his at-bats in the 4th and 5th slots last year, but manager Mike Scioscia plans to use the outfielder at the top of the lineup in 2008, either batting leadoff or second, according to the LA Daily News. "Obviously, Vlad will be the keystone," Scioscia said. "It will be a question of whether we are setting the table enough. Whether teams are pitching to Vlad or not, you have to create (run-scoring) opportunities. The whole lineup is contingent on how the pieces fit and whether we're setting the table enough for Vlad or we need to adjust." With the acquisition of Torii Hunter this offseason, Matthews will rotate the corner outfield positions next year.
So Taguchi, LF, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 12/6, 11:47 AM CT
The Cardinals released So Taguchi Thursday. The move was made to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Brian Barton, who the team took in the Rule 5 draft. Taguchi hit .290 with three homers and 30 RBI in 307 at-bats with the Cards in '07.
Hiroki Kuroda, P, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 12/6, 11:45 AM CT
The Mariners are one of the frontrunners to land Hiroki Kuroda this winter, and there's speculation they've increased their offer from three to four years, according to the Seattle Times. A four-year deal could potentially land the hurler more than $40 million. The Dodgers and Diamondbacks also reportedly have offers out to Kuroda.
Julio Mateo, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 12/6, 11:36 AM CT
The Phillies released Julio Mateo Thursday. Mateo came to Philly last July in a trade with Seattle but never was called up to the big leagues. "We didn't feel like we wanted to go to arbitration with him," GM Pat Gillick said in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Mateo is involved in a domestic abuse case, but Gillick declined to comment when asked if that had anything to do with the right-hander's release.
Paul Lo Duca, C, Florida MarlinsThursday 12/6, 11:35 AM CT
Paul Lo Duca is nearing an agreement with the Blue Jays, according to the Globe and Mail. The contract would be a one-year deal with the $3-4 million range. Lo Duca, who hit .272 with nine homers and 54 RBI in 2007, would split time behind the plate with Gregg Zaun.
Hanley Ramirez, SS, Florida MarlinsThursday 12/6, 11:31 AM CT
With Miguel Cabrera now in Detroit, the Marlins have a gaping hole in the third spot in their order. That spot could be filled by Hanley Ramirez. "I've always said that, one day, Hanley's going to be a middle-of-the-lineup type guy, maybe in '08," manager Fredi Gonzalez said in the Miami Herald. Ramirez hit third 39 times in '07 but has been used mainly in the leadoff spot. A move to the three hole would obviously increase Ramirez's RBI chances, but his runs scored and perhaps his steals totals would take a hit.
Barry Bonds, OF, San Francisco GiantsThursday 12/6, 11:29 AM CT
Barry Bonds' arraignment is scheduled for Friday in San Francisco Federal court, but the slugger has made it clear he'd like to play in 2008, according to ESPN.com. "He's training currently and he'd like to come back in 2008 to put a World Series ring on his finger," Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, told MLB.com. "Barry definitely wants to continue playing. So I'm actively pursuing jobs for him from teams that are committed to winning." Borris has stated that Bonds' legal situation will not conflict with the 2008 season, but it still seems like a longshot that a team would want to take on that kind of baggage.
Brandon Jones, LF, Atlanta BravesThursday 12/6, 11:24 AM CT
Brandon Jones injured a shoulder trying to make a diving catch in a winter-league game in Mexico this week. However, the Braves are confident that the ailment isn't serious. "We don't think it's anything significant; probably just need some rest," GM Frank Wren said in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Jones is expected to compete for the left field job in spring training and could end up in a platoon with Matt Diaz.
Johan Santana, P, New York MetsThursday 12/6, 11:17 AM CT
The Twins are still looking to trade Johan Santana but there is no deal imminent, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The Twins are reportedly holding out for Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester to be part of a three- or four-player package from Boston. Aside from the Red Sox, the Mets, Mariners and Angels could all still potentially jump into the mix.
Jason Bay, LF, Boston Red SoxThursday 12/6, 11:13 AM CT
Once the Tigers acquired Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis from the Marlins, there were reports the Indians picked up their trade talks with Pittsburgh regarding Jason Bay. However, the Indians deny their interest in Bay has been renewed, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. It's still possible the Pirates will trade Bay this offseason, but this really isn't the best time to trade him, considering he's coming off a down year.
Tim Lahey, P, Minnesota TwinsThursday 12/6, 11:10 AM CT
The Rays sold Tim Lahey, this year's top Rule 5 pick, to the Cubs Thursday, according to the Tampa Tribune. Lahey will attempt to make the Cubs as a middle reliever this spring.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Houston AstrosThursday 12/6, 10:58 AM CT
The Pirates released Jose Castillo on Thursday. Castillo at one point was considered the team's second baseman of the future, but his value really took a nosedive in 2007. He should be able to find a big-league job somewhere, but it's unlikely he will be starting. The Pirates filled Castillo's spot on the 40-man roster with Evan Meek, whom they selected with the second pick in the Rule 5 draft.
Brian Roberts, 2B, Baltimore OriolesThursday 12/6, 10:55 AM CT
A deal still is not imminent, but the Cubs have continued their pursuit of Brian Roberts, according to the Baltimore Sun. Two players mentioned in a possible deal are Sean Gallagher and Matt Murton. In the event the O's trade Roberts, they would likely try to sign free agent Tadahito Iguchi to play second base.
Chris Shelton, 1B, Texas RangersThursday 12/6, 10:35 AM CT
Chris Shelton was shipped to the Rangers Wednesday in exchange for Freddy Guzman. Shelton, who hit .273 with 16 homers for Detroit in 2006, spent all of his time in Triple-A this past year, batting .269 with 14 homers in 139 games. The Rangers don't have any other options at first base right now, so Shelton could win an everyday job if they don't bring in anyone else.
Freddy Guzman, CF, Detroit TigersThursday 12/6, 10:31 AM CT
The Tigers acquired Freddy Guzman from the Rangers Wednesday in exchange for Chris Shelton. Guzman hit .269 with 56 steals in 133 games at Triple-A last year, and he could compete for a utility role with Detroit next season.
Andruw Jones, CF, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 12/6, 10:25 AM CT
Andruw Jones has reached a two-year, $36.2 million contract with the Dodgers, according to the AP. "We're thrilled to get a player of his caliber," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said Thursday morning. "His desire to be in LA was a huge component in this." Jones is coming off a down year, hitting just .222 with 26 homers and 94 RBI this past year, but the hope is he'll rebound to his .260/35 HR level in 2008.
