Pedro Feliz, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 12/8, 12:23 PM CT
Pedro Feliz declined the Giants' arbitration offer Friday. The Giants would like to bring Feliz back on a one-year deal, but he wants a multi-year contract. "If it shifts to our way of thinking, which is shorter term, we're prepared to do that," GM Brian Sabean said in the Mercury News. "We're just not prepared to go long term. . . . I know he wants to come back, but the change of agents really might dictate it."
Michael Barrett, C, San Diego PadresSaturday 12/8, 12:21 PM CT
Michael Barrett has accepted the Padres' offer of salary arbitration. He had a horrible 2007 season, hitting just .244 with nine homers and 41 RBI in 344 combined at-bats with the Cubs and Pads. Barrett will likely platoon with Josh Bard behind the plate in '08.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 12/8, 12:13 PM CT
Salomon Torres isn't too happy about getting traded to the Brewers, and he could retire rather than report to Milwaukee. "It's a giant move and I have to make a decision if I want to go forward," Torres told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "This is going to change my life, my family's life. If I leave them here, they're going to have to be without me for a full year. If I take them with me, they're going to be affected." Brewers GM Doug Melvin thinks Torres will be in a Milwaukee uniform next year. "I think it's all the emotion right now," Melvin said. "When he talked to (Brewers scouting director) Jack (Zduriencik), he said he was thrilled to be coming to the Brewers. I'm hoping he gets over this. All indications he gave Jack were that he wanted to come."
Mark Loretta, 2B, Houston AstrosSaturday 12/8, 12:06 PM CT
Mark Loretta accepted the Astros' offer of salary arbitration Friday and will return to the team. Loretta hit .287 with four homers and 41 RBI in 460 at-bats with Houston in 2007.
Jeff Keppinger, SS, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 12/8, 12:04 PM CT
The release of Jorge Cantu means more playing time at first base for Jeff Keppinger. "That's a good thing for me," Keppinger told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "They want me coming off the bench, so any at-bats I can get are good." The Reds already have first basemen Scott Hatteberg and Joey Votto on the (not to mention Adam Dunn), but they both hit left-handed, which means Keppinger could get some starts at first against southpaws. He started just one game at first for the Reds in '07.
Aaron Rowand, CF, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 12/8, 11:59 AM CT
Not surprisingly, Aaron Rowand has declined an offer of arbitration from the Phillies. The center fielder could still come back to Philly, but both the team and Rowand's representatives said this week at the winter meetings that a deal between the two sides is a "long shot," according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Barry Bonds, OF, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 12/8, 11:52 AM CT
Reports on Friday indicated that Oakland would almost surely sign Barry Bonds, but GM Billy Beane has said that the reports are completely made up. "I'm not going to justify something that somebody wants to make up because they talked to somebody who thinks they know what we're doing," Beane said in the Mercury News. "It's a complete waste of my time." Despite Beane's comments, the A's do appear to be the lone team that may have an interest in Bonds, though the smart money would still be on the slugger not playing at all next season.
Matt Tupman, C, Kansas City RoyalsSaturday 12/8, 11:47 AM CT
With Paul Phillips being designated for assignment, Matt Tupman is the leading candidate to be John Buck's backup behind the plate next season. "It's safe to say that we view Tupman as a better option for us right now," GM Dayton Moore told the Kansas City Star. "...because that's what we chose to do. He's a left-handed bat, and he complements Buck a little better right now. But he does have options, and it's safe to say that we're still looking to improve behind the plate."
Paul Phillips, C, Kansas City RoyalsSaturday 12/8, 11:44 AM CT
The Royals designated Paul Phillips for assignment Friday in an effort to clear room on the 40-man roster for free agent signee Jose Guillen.
Jamey Carroll, 2B, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 12/8, 11:41 AM CT
The Indians have acquired Jamey Carroll from the Rockies in exchange for a player to be named. Carroll hit .225 in 227 at-bats with the Rox in '07. He'll back up at both infield positions.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 12/8, 11:36 AM CT
Eric Gagne declined salary arbitration Friday and will not return to Boston. The Sox will get a sandwich draft pick as compensation from whoever signs Gagne, according to the Boston Globe. The Rangers reportedly had an interest in bringing back Gagne, but they have since ruled themselves out of the bidding on the reliever.
