Craig Monroe, CF, Minnesota TwinsTuesday 12/11, 10:03 PM CT
The Twins inked Craig Monroe to a one-year, $3.85 million deal Tuesday, avoiding arbitration. Monroe will back up at the corner outfield spots and could start at DH against lefties.
Carl Pavano, P, New York YankeesTuesday 12/11, 9:58 PM CT
The Yankees have asked free agent bust Carl Pavano to accept a minor league contract and come off their big league roster. "Right now we're just having preliminary conversations," Pavano's new agent, Tom O'Connell said in the AP. "Carl is contemplating possibly accepting a minor league contract if they choose to release him. At this point, neither the Yankees or Carl have come to any decisions." Pavano is recovering from Tommy John surgery and isn't expected to be ready to pitch until at least midseason.
Kosuke Fukudome, RF, Chicago CubsTuesday 12/11, 9:55 PM CT
Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome has agreed to a contract with the Cubs. The deal is for four years and is worth somewhere in the $50 million range, according to SportsTicker. Fukudome was limited to just 81 games for the Chunichi Dragons last season after undergoing season-ending elbow surgery, but he'll be fine for spring training and will be the Cubs' everyday right fielder.
Matt Wise, P, New York MetsTuesday 12/11, 4:29 PM CT
The Brewers designated Matt Wise for assignment Tuesday. Wise was 3-2 with a 4.19 ERA in 56 games for the Brewers last season.
Aaron Cook, P, Colorado RockiesTuesday 12/11, 4:24 PM CT
The Rockies signed Aaron Cook to a three-year, $30 million extension Tuesday. The sinkerballer went 8-7 with a 4.12 ERA in 25 starts for the Rox in 2007.
Michael Barrett, C, San Diego PadresTuesday 12/11, 11:38 AM CT
The Pirates could be interested in trading for Michael Barrett, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Barrett recently accepted arbitration from the Padres and could make more than $4 million next season.
Eric Munson, C, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 12/11, 11:28 AM CT
Eric Munson avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $525,000 deal with the Brewers Tuesday. He will back up Jason Kendall behind the plate and could get occasional spot duty at first and third.
Brandon Inge, C, Detroit TigersTuesday 12/11, 11:06 AM CT
The Tigers and Pirates have discussed a deal involving Brandon Inge over the last couple of days, but it's unclear how close the two sides are to a deal, according to the Detroit Free Press. Inge became expendable once the Tigers acquired Miguel Cabrera from the Marlins. A trade is the only way he'll get playing tim on a consistent basis.
Kosuke Fukudome, RF, Chicago CubsTuesday 12/11, 11:00 AM CT
Kosuke Fukudome has officially made the decision to leave Japan and play in the major leagues in 2008, according to ESPN.com. "I won't be playing for a Japanese club next season, I'll play in the majors," Fukudome said. "I appreciate the fans who supported me for nine years. I hope that the fans continue to root for me when they see me playing in the United States." Fukudome, who has 192 homers and a .305 BA over nine seasons in Japan, has received interest from the Cubs, Padres and White Sox. He's reportedly looking for a five-year deal, although it seems teams are hesitant to give more than four.
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF, Boston Red SoxTuesday 12/11, 10:46 AM CT
There is no Johan Santana trade imminent, but Jacoby Ellsbury is reportedly the center piece the Twins are most seriously considering, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The Red Sox have two offers on the table, one that involves Ellsbury, and one that involves Jon Lester. It still seems likely the Sox will be the club that ultimately comes away with Santana, but there's still time for the Angels or Yankees to get back into the mix.
Josh Barfield, 2B, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 12/11, 10:35 AM CT
With Cleveland's acquisition of Jamey Carroll, Josh Barfield will likely begin the 2008 season at Triple-A Buffalo, assuming he isn't traded, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Barfield is coming off a horrid season that saw him hit just .243 with three homers in 420 at-bats. There's still potential here, but there's no need to pay him any attention on draft day next year.
Brendan Donnelly, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 12/11, 10:29 AM CT
The Red Sox are discussing a deal with Brendan Donnelly to bring him back for another season, according to the Boston Herald. Donnelly, who underwent Tommy John surgery in August, won't start throwing again until August. He posted a 3.05 ERA in 27 games in 2007.
