Matt Clement, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 1/3, 4:36 PM CT
Matt Clement signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals Thursday. Terms of the deal aren't known, but it's thought to be an incentive-based deal that includes a club option for 2009, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Matt is a very talented pitcher who has been beset by injury the last few years," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement released by the team. "Based on our findings from his rehabilitation last season and his recent physical, we feel that he can be a solid addition to our starting rotation, and should have no limitations upon reporting to spring training." Clement, who did not pitch at all in 2007, will compete for a rotation spot this spring.
Faustino de los Santos, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 1/3, 2:17 PM CT
The White Sox traded top prospect Faustino de los Santos to Oakland on Thursday in the Nick Swisher deal. Santos is still a couple years away, but he posted a 2.65 ERA with an 11.7 K/9 rate in 26 combined games (20 starts) between Low- and High-A last year. He has the potential of a No. 1 starter.
Ryan Sweeney, CF, Oakland AthleticsThursday 1/3, 2:11 PM CT
Ryan Sweeney was shipped to Oakland Thursday as a part of the Nick Swisher deal. Sweeney, who hit .270 with a .348 OBP, 10 homers and 47 RBI in 105 Triple-A games last year, will get a chance to win an outfield job this spring, but it's also possible he'll begin the year back in the minors.
Gio Gonzalez, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 1/3, 2:01 PM CT
Gio Gonzalez was traded to the A's Thursday as part of the Nick Swisher deal. He posted a 3.18 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 27 starts at Double-A last season. He also boasted an 11.1 K/9 rate, whiffing 185 in 150 innings. Gonzalez could begin the year in Triple-A, but we should see him in the big leagues at some point in '08.
Nick Swisher, CF, Chicago White SoxThursday 1/3, 1:54 PM CT
The White Sox acquired Nick Swisher from the A's on Thursday in exchange for Gio Gonzalez, Ryan Sweeney and Fautino De Los Santos, according to the AP. Swisher will likely handle center field for the Pale Hose, meaning Jerry Owens would be relegated to a backup role.
Johan Santana, P, New York MetsThursday 1/3, 11:11 AM CT
Hank Steinbrenner believes the Yankees have made the top offer for Johan Santana, according to the NY Daily News. "I think the Twins realize our offer is the best one," Steinbrenner said Wednesday in a telephone interview. "I feel confident they're not going to trade him before checking with us one last time and I think they think we've already made the best offer." It's unclear exactly what the proposed deal includes, but it's been speculated that it includes, Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera, Jeff Marquez and possibly another prospect.
Roger Clemens, P, New York YankeesThursday 1/3, 11:08 AM CT
Even if Roger Clemens decides he wants to pitch one more season, don't count on the Yankees bringing him back. "I'm not signing Clemens," Hank Steinbrenner, the Yankees' senior vice president, told the NY Daily News. He added that the Yankees weren't looking for short-term stopgaps in their rotation, because of their young pitching.
Jay Payton, LF, Baltimore OriolesThursday 1/3, 11:04 AM CT
The Baltimore Sun reports that Jay Payton is on the trade block. The Orioles did just acquire Chris Roberson from the Phillies, so they have some outfield depth, but he's not starter material.
Jorge Cantu, 3B, Florida MarlinsThursday 1/3, 10:28 AM CT
The Marlins could be close to inking Jorge Cantu to a deal. He would compete with Jose Castillo for the third base job. "It's a situation that's intriguing to Jorge," Cantu's agent, Steve Canter said in the Sun-Sentinel. "There's a definite connection here. A lot of the front office that was in Tampa is over in Florida now and they're fully aware of his abilities. He had a really strong finish to the season so he'll get a lot of interest from several clubs, but this could end up working out." The Fish are also looking at Dallas McPherson for the hot corner.
