Andy Phillips, 1B, Cincinnati RedsFriday 1/4, 5:47 PM CT
Andy Phillips signed a minor-league deal with the Reds on Friday. Phillips, who batted .292 with two homers in 185 at-bats in 2007, will compete for a reserve job in the spring.
Jorge Cantu, 3B, Florida MarlinsFriday 1/4, 5:45 PM CT
Jorge Cantu signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins Friday, according to the AP. The Marlins are hoping Cantu can fill the void at third base. However, he has done very little since blasting 28 homers with 117 RBI in 2005, so he won't simply be handed the job. Jose Castillo is expected to receive consideration for the third-base job, as well.
Luis Ayala, P, Washington NationalsFriday 1/4, 3:56 PM CT
Luis Ayala suffered a bruised nerve in his upper forearm when he was hit by a shotgun pellet during a hunting trip. However, the reliever has no artery damage and the nerve is intact, and he's expected to participate fully in spring training, according to the AP. Ayala was solid last year in his return from Tommy John surgery, posting a 3.19 ERA in 44 games.
Michael Megrew, P, San Diego PadresFriday 1/4, 2:47 PM CT
The Padres inked Michael Megrew to a minor-league deal Thursday. He appeared in 21 games (19 starts) for Double-A Jacksonville in 2007, going 6-6 with a 5.30 ERA. Megrew will be a longshot in spring training to make the team.
Jeff DaVanon, OF, San Diego PadresFriday 1/4, 2:39 PM CT
The Padres officially signed Jeff DaVanon to a minor-league deal Thursday. DaVanon agreed in principle to a deal last month. He'll compete for a bench job in spring training.
Aaron Miles, 2B, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 1/4, 1:36 PM CT
Aaron Miles re-signed with the Cardinals Friday on a one-year deal, according to the AP. "Aaron has shown a great deal of versatility with our club over the past two years," said Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak. "He has proven to be a quality player both as a starter and off the bench and the value of a player like Aaron who can play several positions and hit from both sides can not be understated." Miles, who hit .290 in 414 at-bats last year, could once again serve in a utility role, although it's also possible he'll see the majority of the action at second base if Adam Kennedy doesn't rebound.
