Shawn Camp, P, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 1/7, 8:37 PM CT
Shawn Camp, a 32-old relief pitcher who spent the last two seasons with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, agreed to a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, with an invitation to spring training. Camp was 0-3 with a 7.20 ERA in 50 appearances last season.
Jayson Werth, RF, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 1/7, 2:58 PM CT
The Phillies avoided arbitration by inking Jayson Werth to a one-year, $1.7 million deal Monday. The contract also includes performance bonuses. Werth had a nice year as a part-timer with the Phils last year, hitting .298 with a .404 OBP to go along with eight homers and 49 RBI in 255 at-bats. He hit .375 against lefties in 2007 and should get plenty of starts against southpaws in 2008.
Mike DiFelice, C, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 1/7, 2:48 PM CT
Mike DiFelice signed a minor-league deal with Tampa Bay Monday and received an invitation to spring training. DiFelice, who hit .250 in 40 at-bats last season, will compete for a backup catcher job in the spring, but he won't have any fantasy value regardless.
Duaner Sanchez, P, New York MetsMonday 1/7, 2:45 PM CT
Duaner Sanchez avoided arbitration with the Mets by inking a one-year deal on Monday. The right-hander missed all of last seen following shoulder surgery, but he should be an important part of the Mets bullpen if he proves healthy.
Josh Towers, P, Colorado RockiesMonday 1/7, 11:31 AM CT
The Rockies have signed Josh Towers to a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2009. Only $400,000 is guaranteed for 2008, but Towers will make a prorated $1.8 million as soon as he is added to the active 25-man roster, according to the Denver Post. He can earn an additional $1.35 million in incentives based on appearances and innings pitched. The option is for $3 million. Towers is expected to compete for the last spot in the rotation but could also fill a long relief role in the bullpen.
Elmer Dessens, P, Atlanta BravesMonday 1/7, 10:32 AM CT
The Pirates inked Elmer Dessens to a minor-league deal Monday. Dessens began his career with the Bucs in 1996. He suffered through a terrible 2007 campaign, holding a combined 7.15 ERA in 34 innings for Milwaukee and Colorado. The veteran will compete for a job as the long man out of the bullpen.
