Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 1/9, 4:30 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer re-signed a one-year contract with the A's on Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Duchscherer posted a 4.96 ERA in 17 relief appearances in 2006, but he's expected to be shifted to the starting rotation this spring. He's recovering from hip surgery.
Marcus Giles, 2B, Wednesday 1/9, 1:53 PM CT
The Rockies and Marcus Giles have finalized a minor-league contract. Giles batted just .229 with four homers and 39 RBI in 116 games last year with the Padres but will be given a chance in spring training to win the second base job.
Brian Shouse, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 1/9, 11:46 AM CT
The Brewers avoided arbitration by signing Brian Shouse to a one-year deal Wednesday. The left-handed Shouse was effective out of pen for the Brew Crew last year, holding a 3.02 ERA and 1.26 WHIP over 73 games.
Keith Foulke, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 1/9, 11:40 AM CT
Keith Foulke is wanting to pitch again after sitting out the 2007 season following surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow. The D'Backs plan to watch Foulke throw later this month, but it's not clear at this point what other teams will be in attendance, according to the Arizona Republic. It's possible (though very unlikely) that Foulke could end up competing for the closer role in Arizona, but he'll probably have to work his way back as a middle reliever at first.
Brian Roberts, 2B, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 1/9, 11:30 AM CT
Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune thinks that a deal sending Brian Roberts to the Cubs is inevitable. The package that the Cubs will send to Baltimore is believed to include Sean Gallagher, Sean Marshall and Ronny Cedeno, though it's not clear if those are the only three players involved. Roberts hit .290 with 12 homers, 57 RBI, 103 runs scored and 50 steals last year. He would bump Mark DeRosa to a utility role.
Tony Pena, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 1/9, 11:24 AM CT
With Chad Qualls in line for the seventh inning, Tony Pena and Brandon Lyon are expected to compete for the closer role this spring. "We still haven't ironed it out," manager Bob Melvin told the Arizona Republic. "Both these guys can do it, and we're comfortable with both of them. At some point in time entering spring training, we'll settle on one of them." Pena has the better stuff of the two relievers, but Lyon has closer experience. Another name to keep an eye on in Keith Foulke, who is attempting a comeback after having bone chips removed from his elbow last year. The D'Backs will watch Foulke throw later this month.
Ronny Paulino, C, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 1/9, 11:14 AM CT
Ronny Paulino reported to the Pirates minicamp Tuesday 10 pounds lighter than he was at the end of last season. He now tips the scales at about 235, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Perhaps Paulino got tired of all the talk of the Bucs bringing in another catcher, because he certainly appears motivated to keep his job. Paul Maholm, Ryan Doumit and Zach Duke have also shed some pounds over the offseason.
Eddie Guardado, P, Minnesota TwinsWednesday 1/9, 11:04 AM CT
Eddie Guardado is expected to sign a contract with the Rangers sometime this week. Guardado held a 7.24 ERA in 15 games last year after coming back from elbow surgery. If he shows that he's healthy, the veteran could push C.J. Wilson for the closer job.
Chris Duffy, CF, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 1/9, 11:02 AM CT
Chris Duffy is still healing from shoulder surgery and might miss part of spring training. Nyjer Morgan and Nate McLouth are expected to compete for the center field job, so Duffy is likely to begin the year at Triple-A, regardless, according to the AP.
Miguel Cairo, 1B, Seattle MarinersWednesday 1/9, 10:57 AM CT
The Mariners signed Miguel Cairo to a one-year deal Tuesday. Cairo batted .253 with 10 steals in 82 games with the Yankees and Cardinals last year. He's expected to fill a utility role, though it's possible he could push Jose Lopez for some playing time at second.
Luke Hudson, P, Kansas City RoyalsWednesday 1/9, 10:47 AM CT
The Royals avoided arbitration by signing Luke Hudson Wednesday to a one-year deal worth a little more than $500,000. Hudson made just one start last year before eventually requiring surgery on his pitching shoulder in June. He is expected to be recovered enough to compete in spring training. "When he's healthy, he's got some pretty dynamic stuff," GM Dayton Moore said in the Kansas City Star. "The quality of his pitches is very good. We're counting on him coming in here and competing for a job."
Aubrey Huff, DH, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 1/9, 10:36 AM CT
Aubrey Huff strained his groin during an offseason workout recently. The Orioles don't consider the ailment to be serious, and at this point, it doesn't look like it will require surgery or hamper Huff at all during spring training, according to the Baltimore Sun. This situation is certainly worth monitoring, though.
