Brian Shouse, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 1/9, 11:46 AM CT
The Brewers avoided arbitration by signing Brian Shouse to a one-year deal Wednesday. The left-handed Shouse was effective out of pen for the Brew Crew last year, holding a 3.02 ERA and 1.26 WHIP over 73 games.
Tony Pena, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 1/9, 11:24 AM CT
With Chad Qualls in line for the seventh inning, Tony Pena and Brandon Lyon are expected to compete for the closer role this spring. "We still haven't ironed it out," manager Bob Melvin told the Arizona Republic. "Both these guys can do it, and we're comfortable with both of them. At some point in time entering spring training, we'll settle on one of them." Pena has the better stuff of the two relievers, but Lyon has closer experience. Another name to keep an eye on in Keith Foulke, who is attempting a comeback after having bone chips removed from his elbow last year. The D'Backs will watch Foulke throw later this month.
Ronny Paulino, C, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 1/9, 11:14 AM CT
Ronny Paulino reported to the Pirates minicamp Tuesday 10 pounds lighter than he was at the end of last season. He now tips the scales at about 235, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Perhaps Paulino got tired of all the talk of the Bucs bringing in another catcher, because he certainly appears motivated to keep his job. Paul Maholm, Ryan Doumit and Zach Duke have also shed some pounds over the offseason.
Chris Duffy, CF, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 1/9, 11:02 AM CT
Chris Duffy is still healing from shoulder surgery and might miss part of spring training. Nyjer Morgan and Nate McLouth are expected to compete for the center field job, so Duffy is likely to begin the year at Triple-A, regardless, according to the AP.
