Adam Loewen, P, Baltimore OriolesThursday 1/10, 11:33 AM CT
Adam Loewen's recovery is going well, and he expects to be ready for spring training. The lefty missed the last five months of the 2007 season after undergoing surgery to repair a stress fracture in his elbow. Loewen is dealing with tightness in his shoulder, but the O's think it's nothing more than the normal discomfort that comes from a long layoff. "Every time I throw, it gets looser and looser," Loewen told the Baltimore Sun. "I'm not saying it hurts. I haven't taken seven months off since I was a little kid, so naturally, it's going to be tight." As far as his elbow is concerned, Loewen says it feels great. "When I throw, I don't feel a thing," he said. "It's like it's nonexistent."
Akinori Otsuka, P, Texas RangersThursday 1/10, 11:14 AM CT
Now we know why the Rangers decided not to offer Akinori Otsuka a contract for next season. The Newberg Report notes that GM Jon Daniels stated at a Rangers fan event yesterday that Otsuka is headed for elbow surgery that will cost him the entire 2008 season. Otsuka had arm problems that kept him out for the second half of the '07 season, but this is the first we've heard of him needing some extensive elbow surgery. We'll keep you posted on his status going forward.
Jason Lane, OF, New York YankeesThursday 1/10, 11:08 AM CT
The Yankees have some interest in brining in free agent Jason Lane to battle for playing time at first base. Lane has spent nearly all of his career in the outfield but has played four games at first, and the Yanks don't think he'll have any trouble adjusting to the position, according to the NY Post. This seems like an odd move, as Lane has been horrible the last two years, and the Yankees already have Jason Giambi, Shelley Duncan and Wilson Betemit vying for time at first.
