Jayson Nix, 2B, Chicago White SoxThursday 1/10, 12:49 PM CT
Even with the signing of Marcus Giles, Jayson Nix is the favorite to land the second base job for the Rockies. "That is what you'd like to do, bring in a young position player and a bullpen guy every year, let them get their feet on the ground," manager Clint Hurdle said in the Rocky Mountain News. "The road is paved for him." Nix hit .292 with 11 homers, 58 RBI and 24 steals for Triple-A Colorado last year. He could also face competition from Ian Stewart and Jeff Baker, but they're both trying to learn second base and are considered longshots to win the starting job.
Josh Phelps, 1B, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 1/10, 12:37 PM CT
The Cardinals signed Josh Phelps to a minor-league deal Thursday. Phelps will make $750,000 if he makes the major league roster, with a possible $250,000 more in incentives, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. If he sticks with the Cards, Phelps would be used mainly in a pinch-hitting role, while also serving as Albert Pujols' backup at first and as the third catcher.
Johan Santana, P, New York MetsThursday 1/10, 11:47 AM CT
A team from New York could be the best fit for Johan Santana. But this team plays in Queens, not The Bronx. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that the Mets have offered top pitching prospect Deolis Guerra, along with center fielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Kevin Mulvey and Phil Humber. The Twins have told the Mets they'd have a done deal if they would add prized outfield prospect Fernando Martinez. He would likely replace Gomez in the deal.
Adam Loewen, LF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 1/10, 11:33 AM CT
Adam Loewen's recovery is going well, and he expects to be ready for spring training. The lefty missed the last five months of the 2007 season after undergoing surgery to repair a stress fracture in his elbow. Loewen is dealing with tightness in his shoulder, but the O's think it's nothing more than the normal discomfort that comes from a long layoff. "Every time I throw, it gets looser and looser," Loewen told the Baltimore Sun. "I'm not saying it hurts. I haven't taken seven months off since I was a little kid, so naturally, it's going to be tight." As far as his elbow is concerned, Loewen says it feels great. "When I throw, I don't feel a thing," he said. "It's like it's nonexistent."
Mike Cameron, CF, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 1/10, 11:23 AM CT
The Brewers are interested in bringing in center fielder Mike Cameron. The move would result in Bill Hall either going back to the infield or being dealt and Ryan Braun heading out to left field, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Brewers GM Doug Melvin has stated previously that he would be reluctant to ask Hall to change positions again, which could mean a trade is more likely if the team signs Cameron, who is suspended for the first 25 games of the season for testing positive for a banned stimulant last year. Stay tuned.
Akinori Otsuka, P, Texas RangersThursday 1/10, 11:14 AM CT
Now we know why the Rangers decided not to offer Akinori Otsuka a contract for next season. The Newberg Report notes that GM Jon Daniels stated at a Rangers fan event yesterday that Otsuka is headed for elbow surgery that will cost him the entire 2008 season. Otsuka had arm problems that kept him out for the second half of the '07 season, but this is the first we've heard of him needing some extensive elbow surgery. We'll keep you posted on his status going forward.
Jason Lane, OF, Boston Red SoxThursday 1/10, 11:08 AM CT
The Yankees have some interest in brining in free agent Jason Lane to battle for playing time at first base. Lane has spent nearly all of his career in the outfield but has played four games at first, and the Yanks don't think he'll have any trouble adjusting to the position, according to the NY Post. This seems like an odd move, as Lane has been horrible the last two years, and the Yankees already have Jason Giambi, Shelley Duncan and Wilson Betemit vying for time at first.
