Adam LaRoche, 1B, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 1/15, 10:59 AM CT
The Pirates avoided arbitration by inking Adam LaRoche to a one-year, $5 million deal Monday. The two sides will also continue discussing a long-term extension, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. LaRoche hit .272 with 21 homers and 88 RBI last year in his first season with the Bucs.
Miguel Tejada, SS, Houston AstrosTuesday 1/15, 10:53 AM CT
The US Congress has asked the Justice Department to look into whether Miguel Tejada lied to committee staffers when questioned in connection to the Rafael Palmeiro perjury case in 2005. "Tejada told the committee that he never used illegal performance-enhancing drugs and that he had no knowledge of other players using or even talking about steroids," committee chairman Henry Waxman said in the AP. "Well, the Mitchell Report, however, directly contradicts key elements of Mr. Tejada's testimony." The Mitchell Report listed Tejada as having purchased HGH back in 2003.
Rod Barajas, C, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 1/15, 10:27 AM CT
The Orioles are looking at Rod Barajas as a possible back-up catcher option, according to the Baltimore Sun. Barajas hit .230 with four homers and 10 RBI in 122 at-bats in 2007, and he would have very little fantasy value in a back-up role.
Adam Loewen, P, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 1/15, 10:25 AM CT
The Orioles training staff examined Adam Loewen, recovering from elbow surgery, on Monday, and the lefty's shoulder and elbow checked out fine, according to the Baltimore Sun. Executive vice president Mike Flanagan mentioned that Loewen is in "great shape" and just needs to continue throwing to build up arm strength. Barring a setback, the O's expect the youngster to be ready for spring training.
Octavio Dotel, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 1/15, 10:23 AM CT
The Orioles, still in need of a closer, have been in contact with Octavio Dotel's agent, according to the Baltimore Sun. However, the general feeling in Baltimore is that late-inning relief is not a top priority. Should the O's not bring in Dotel, they could look at Greg Aquino as an in-house option.
Adam Jones, CF, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 1/15, 10:19 AM CT
Adam Jones was held out of Saturday and Sunday's games in Venezuela over the weekend, which led many to speculate he was close to being dealt to Baltimore in a package for Erik Bedard, according to the Seattle Times. He was back in the lineup on Monday, however, so a deal doesn't appear to be imminent. The Mariners would not comment on Jones' absence over the weekend, but the talks between the two clubs are still thought to be ongoing.
