Johan Santana, P, New York MetsFriday 2/1, 5:49 PM CT
The Mets and Johan Santana have agreed to a contract extension, according to the AP. The contract is worth $137.5 million over six years, and a club option for 2014 with a $5.5 million buyout. The deal is now pending a physical. Earlier the Mets had requested, and were granted, a two-hour extension to the 5:00 pm deadline to reach an agreement.
Johan Santana, P, New York MetsFriday 2/1, 5:04 PM CT
Johan Santana and the Mets were granted an extra two hours to work on a contract extension Friday, pushing the deadline to 7 p.m. EST, according to the AP. Team officials met with Santana's agent, Peter Greenberg, in Manhattan for the third straight day as the sides tried to negotiate a deal for the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner. The Mets must reach an agreement with Santana on a new contract for the trade to be completed.
Sean Burnett, P, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 2/1, 3:29 PM CT
The Pirates designated Sean Burnett for assignment on Friday in order to clear room on their roster for Ray Olmedo. He's been a non-factor since undergoing elbow surgery in 2004.
Ray Olmedo, SS, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 2/1, 3:25 PM CT
The Pirates claimed Ray Olmedo off waivers Friday, according to SportsTicker. He was designated for assignment last week by the Blue Jays. Olmedo could give the Pirates some defensive help as an infield backup, but his bat leaves a lot to be desired in fantasy terms.
Josh Paul, C, Houston AstrosFriday 2/1, 1:10 PM CT
The Rays have agreed to a minor league contract with Josh Paul, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He'll have to hold off Shawn Riggans and Mike Defilice in order to keep his job as the Rays' backup catcher in 2008.
Brian Anderson, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 2/1, 1:07 PM CT
Brian Anderson has agreed to a minor league contract with the Rays, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He's missed the past two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery, so he'll have to prove he's fully recovered if he's going to really compete for a roster spot with the Rays.
Johan Santana, P, New York MetsFriday 2/1, 12:58 PM CT
Johan Santana and the Mets are expected to get a contract worked out before Friday's 5:00 PM ET deadline, according to the New York Daily News. The News quoted a baseball executive, who said, on condition of anonymity, "Usually, nothing gets done until the very end, like any negotiation." While all signs point to them working out the fine print and agreeing to terms, nothing is ever certain about a contract until both sides actually sign the deal. On the other hand, it would be a total PR disaster if the Mets fail to land the big fish called Santana. Once a deal is agreed to, all players in the trade will have to pass physicals before the trade can be completed.
Sean Casey, 1B, Boston Red SoxFriday 2/1, 12:31 PM CT
The Red Sox and Sean Casey have agreed to a one-year deal that will pay the first baseman $800,000, according to the Boston Globe. The Tigers opted against bringing Casey back for this coming season, so he'll back up Kevin Youkilis for the Red Sox.
Chris Heintz, C, Baltimore OriolesFriday 2/1, 12:27 PM CT
Chris Heintz has signed a minor league contract with the Orioles and will be invited to spring training, according to the Baltimore Sun. He'll compete with Guillermo Quiroz to back up Ramon Hernandez behind the plate.
Esteban Yan, P, Baltimore OriolesFriday 2/1, 12:22 PM CT
The Orioles have inked Esteban Yan to a minor league contract, according to the Baltimore Sun. Yan pitched for the Hashin Tigers in Japan last season, going 6-5 with a 4.66 ERA, and will be invited to spring training to try to earn a role in the bullpen.
Josh Fogg, P, Cincinnati RedsFriday 2/1, 10:45 AM CT
The Twins contacted Josh Fogg's agent Thursday, and appear serious about adding the veteran right-hander if the Johan Santana deal goes through with the Mets, according to the Denver Post. Fogg confirmed the Twins have expressed interest, but said there has been no offer yet. That could happen as soon as today if Santana completes negotiations with the Mets on a contract extension. Fogg was 10-9 with a 4.94 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP last season for the NL champion Rockies and would be merely rotation filler in Minnesota.
Barry Bonds, OF, San Francisco GiantsFriday 2/1, 10:35 AM CT
It may not be getting much media attention, but Barry Bonds is still a free agent and remains adamant about wanting to play in 2008, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal. "He is unequivocally not retiring," Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, said. Bonds is under indictment for perjury and obstruction of justice. He asked a federal judge last week to dismiss the charges.
Casey Blake, 3B, Cleveland IndiansFriday 2/1, 10:29 AM CT
Casey Blake and the Indians came to terms on a one-year deal on Friday, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Terms were not disclosed, but it's believed the deal is worth close to $6 million. Blake filed for $6.9 million, while the Indians countered at $5.4 million. He hit .270 with 36 doubles, four triples, 18 homers and 78 RBI last season, and his 26-game hitting streak was the longest in the American League.
