Khalil Greene, SS, San Diego PadresSaturday 2/2, 9:39 PM CT
Khalil Greene and the Padres are reportedly closing in on a two-year contract worth roughly $11 million, according to the AP. Greene finally stayed healthy in 2007 and slugged a career-high 27 homers with 97 RBI. However, given his injury-stricken past, he still carries some risk on draft day, which could make him a solid value pick in the later rounds.
Jon Rauch, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 2/2, 5:32 PM CT
Jon Rauch agreed to a $3.2 million, two-year contract with the Nationals Saturday, according to the AP. He will make $1.2 million in 2008 and $2 million in 2009. Rauch posted a 3.61 ERA and 7.3 K/9 rate in 88 relief appearances last year as the Nats' top setup man. He'll assume a similar role in 2008, unless Chad Cordero gets dealt, in which case Rauch would be one of the favorites to take over the closer job.
Johan Santana, P, New York MetsSaturday 2/2, 3:53 PM CT
Johan Santana passed his physical on Saturday, according to the AP. With that taken care of and a monster six-year, $137.5 million contract in hand, his trade to the Mets has been completed. NL-only leaguers rejoice! You can now draft the best pitcher in baseball this season.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 2/2, 9:01 AM CT
The Pirates are nearing a multi-year deal with Freddy Sanchez, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. They have until Feb. 11 to work it out if they want to avoid an arbitration hearing, but it sounds like they'll have him locked up by early next week.
Paul Bako, C, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 2/2, 8:53 AM CT
Paul Bako has signed a minor league contract with the Reds, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. He'll fight for a roster spot in camp, but he'll be a long-shot.
Scott Sauerbeck, P, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 2/2, 8:50 AM CT
Scott Sauerbeck has signed a minor league contract with the Reds, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. He didn't pitch in the majors last season, but posted a 4.97 ERA and 1.58 WHIP over 25.1 innings for the Indians and A's in 2006. He'll battle for a bullpen job in spring training.
Kevin Mench, LF, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 2/2, 8:34 AM CT
The Rangers are considering brining Kevin Mench to training camp as a non-roster invitee, according to the Dallas Morning News. He could battle with Jason Botts and Nelson Cruz to be a right-handed-hitting backup outfielder. Mench hit .267 with eight homers in 288 at-bats for the Brewers last season after the Rangers dealt him to Milwaukee during the 2006 campaign.
Pedro Feliciano, P, New York MetsSaturday 2/2, 8:21 AM CT
Pedro Feliciano signed a one-year contract with the Mets on Friday that will pay him $1.025 million, according to the New York Daily News. He avoided going to salary arbitration by inking the deal, though the Mets still have Oliver Perez, Jorge Sosa, and Ryan Church available for arbitration at this point. Feliciano had a 3.09 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and struck out 61 batters in 64 IP last season.
Manny Ramirez, LF, Boston Red SoxSaturday 2/2, 8:13 AM CT
Manny Ramirez said he plans to be at training camp on time this month, according to the Boston Herald. "I’ll be there on the 21st," he said. Ramirez has been working out at Athletes Performance Institute in Arizona since early December, so he should be in great shape as he enters an important couple of years. His current contract runs out after this season, but the Red Sox have options for 2009 and 2010, so clearly Manny has many reasons to perform well this season.
Joe Beimel, P, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 2/2, 8:06 AM CT
Joe Beimel and the Dodgers avoided arbitration by agreeing Friday to a one-year contract, according to the LA Times. He'll earn $1.925 million, tough he'll have various bonuses available for games pitched. He was the last Dodger up for arbitration, so the club has all their ducks in order heading towards spring training. Beimel posted a 3.88 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, while striking out 39 batters in 83 innings last season.
