Juan Gonzalez, OF, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 2/3, 2:55 PM CT
Juan Gonzalez is about to sign a minor league deal with the Cardinals, according to Newsday. It was reported a couple of weeks ago that the Cards were interested in bringing him in for a look this spring, and it appears it's going to happen. Gonzalez has more MVP's (two) than at-bats (one) in the past three seasons, so expectations should be pretty low if he makes a comeback.
Casey Janssen, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 2/3, 2:32 PM CT
Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi said that Casey Janssen will be a player to keep an eye on this spring, according to the Boston Globe. "Well, we'd love to move Casey Janssen into the rotation," he said. "We feel he'd be an excellent fourth starter for us. But we'll have to see how (B.J.) Ryan is and make our decision from there." Janssen posted a 2.35 ERA and 1.20 WHIP as a reliever last season. If Ryan isn't over his Tommy John surgery when the season begins, the Jays may need to keep Janssen in the bullpen as a setup option. If Ryan's ready, we could see Janssen ply his trade in the rotation.
B.J. Ryan, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 2/3, 2:27 PM CT
Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi still expects B.J. Ryan to be over his Tommy John surgery in time for opening day, according to the Boston Globe. "It's been nine months now since the surgery. He threw his second bullpen recently. Until I'm told different, he'll be with us in spring training and ready to start the season. If we have to hold him back a month based on what we see, we'll do that." Realistically, Ryan will be held back early in the season, since this is such a major procedure, but so far, so good.
Mike Sweeney, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 2/3, 8:45 AM CT
Mike Sweeney has shown interest in signing with the Padres, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He'll work out for the club next week. The 34-year-old Sweeney missed most of the past two seasons with injuries but could provide some depth for the Padres.
Khalil Greene, SS, San Diego PadresSunday 2/3, 8:41 AM CT
The Padres and Khalil Greene have agreed to a two-year, $11 million contract, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The club had hoped to lock him up to a three- or four-year deal, but Greene wanted the shorter option. When Greene is able to stay healthy, like last season, he can provide plenty of power.
Rocco Baldelli, CF, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 2/3, 8:22 AM CT
Rocco Baldelli has been hitting, shagging and running "almost all out" with other Rays teammates who arrived early for camp, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He hasn't had any problems with the ailing hamstrings that limited him to 35 games last season, but you can expect him to be extremely cautious this spring and aim soley at being ready for the start of the regular season. When healthy, he has great upside, but he's usually battling some form of injury.
Evan Longoria, 3B, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 2/3, 8:17 AM CT
The Rays are considering deciding before training camps starts Feb. 14 whether Evan Longoria will make the team, according to the St. Petersburg Times. "I heard they might tell me beforehand but not for sure, so I assume it will be based on how I do," Longoria said from California. "It's only fair. I feel I'm coming into spring a lot more ready than I was last year. I'd kind of be a little disappointed if they told me beforehand I didn't have a chance to make the team." At this time, signs point to the Rays sending him to the minors to begin the season, though a hot bat there could make for a brief stay. Longoria only has 104 Triple-A at-bats, hitting .269, so he arguably could use some more seasoning.
