Rudy Seanez, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 2/4, 8:08 PM CT
Rudy Seanez signed a 1-year deal for $550,000 to remain with the Dodgers in 2008 (he can earn up to $750,000 in incentives). Last season he went 6-1 with a 3.79 ERA in 73 games for the Dodgers and figures to fill much the same role with the team this year as a middle reliever and only figures to be a valuable fantasy performer if Jonathan Broxton or Takashi Saito goes down to injury.
Willy Aybar, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 2/4, 7:59 PM CT
Willy Aybar, who hopes to battle for playing time in the Rays IF this season, is apparently being held on charges of domestic violence in the Dominican Republic. "Aybar is in jail since last week, and he could spend at least three more months in jail if he is convicted of domestic violence," said Jesus Fernandez Velez, the prosecutor in the case. If this estimate is true, Aybar would be extremely doubtful to play with the big league club before May at the earliest, which would give rookie Evan Longoria a possible shot at beginning the year in the majors.
Juan Gonzalez, OF, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 2/4, 4:53 PM CT
Juan Gonzalez will attempt to return to baseball this season as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals as one of the team's 26 non-roster invitees to spring training. Gonzalez has been working out this past off-season with Cardinals star Albert Pujols, who encouraged the team to give the former MVP a shot to play in '08 despite the fact that Gonzalez hasn't played since he posted a single AB during the 2005 season.
Erik Bedard, P, Seattle MarinersMonday 2/4, 4:45 PM CT
Erik Bedard appears to be headed to the Seattle Mariners sometime on late Monday or early Tuesday according to a report in the Baltimore Sun. This report, when combined with the one in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer earlier in the day, seems to make it almost certain that Bedard will be switching teams in a matter of hours.
Kris Benson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 2/4, 3:14 PM CT
The Phillies are interested in seeing how well Kris Benson has progressed since the last time he threw for them and eight other teams, last month in Arizona, according to the team's official website. Benson is an appealing option because he's willing to accept a one-year, incentive-laden contract. He missed the entire 2007 season while recovering from shoulder surgery
Julio Lugo, SS, Boston Red SoxMonday 2/4, 2:31 PM CT
The Red Sox's official website speculates that Julio Lugo could lose playing time to prospect Jed Lowrie at some point this season if Lugo struggles like he did in 2007 (.237-8-73 with 33 steals). Lowrie hit .298-13-70 between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket last season while showing tremendous patience at the plate.
Curtis Granderson, CF, Detroit TigersMonday 2/4, 12:01 PM CT
The Tigers and center fielder Curtis Granderson have agreed to a five-year deal with a team option for 2013, according to the AP. Financial terms were not disclosed, but ESPN reported the deal is worth $30.25 million. Last year Granderson became one of only four players in major league history to produce 20 stolen bases, 20 homers, 20 triples and 20 doubles in a single season.
Adam Jones, CF, Baltimore OriolesMonday 2/4, 11:08 AM CT
Mariners outfielder Adam Jones traveled to Baltimore on Sunday, presumably to undergo a physical examination that originally was scheduled for Jan. 29, a source told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. A clean bill of health would be the last hurdle standing between the Mariners and Orioles completing their long-rumored Erik Bedard trade.
CC Sabathia, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 2/4, 11:04 AM CT
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Indians made a four-year offer to C.C. Sabathia at the end of December (which included 2008). It's believed the new money in the Indians' offer to Sabathia is worth between $68 million and $72 million from 2009 and through 2012. The six-year, $137.5 million extension Johan Santana signed Friday with the Mets will probably make that offer to Sabathia insufficient. Sabathia is set to become a free agent after the 2008 season.
