Dave Bush, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 2/5, 10:45 PM CT
Dave Bush and the Brewers managed to avoid going to arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract on Tuesday, according to the AP. Last year was a real disappointment for Bush, as his ERA and WHIP ballooned to 5.12 and 1.40, respectively. However, he showed a lot of upside in previous years, so he could still rebound in 2008.
Javy Lopez, C, Atlanta BravesTuesday 2/5, 8:19 PM CT
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Javy Lopez is in the best shape of his life. The 37-year-old catcher signed a minor league contract with the Braves in December and will compete to back up Brian McCann. Lopez is hoping to not only pull off that feat but to play well enough to entice another team to trade for him to be an everyday option.
Bobby Kielty, OF, Minnesota TwinsTuesday 2/5, 7:30 PM CT
Bobby Kielty has agreed to a one-year non-guaranteed contract to stick with the Red Sox, according to the Boston Globe. If he makes the major league roster, Kielty will earn $800,000, and there are another $300,000 available in incentives. The Red Sox still are considering trading Jacoby Ellsbury or, more likely, Coco Crisp, in which case Kielty would give them some insurance in center field.
Brian Bruney, P, New York YankeesTuesday 2/5, 2:48 PM CT
The Yankees signed Brian Bruney to a one-year, $725,000 deal Tuesday, avoiding arbitration with the right-hander. Bruney was good for the Yanks in '06 but struggled for them last year, posting a 4.68 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and woeful 39/37 K/BB ratio over 50 innings.
Enrique Gonzalez, P, San Diego PadresTuesday 2/5, 2:42 PM CT
The Padres claimed Enrique Gonzalez off waivers from the Nationals Tuesday. The Nats claimed him off waivers just before the end of the season but he didn't make an appearance for them. Gonzalez has a career ERA of 5.82 in 108 1/3 innings for the D'Backs.
Katsuhiko Maekawa, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 2/5, 2:33 PM CT
Katsuhiko Maekawa inked a minor-league deal with the Nationals Tuesday. He had an unimpressive 5.26 ERA and a 417/345 K/BB ratio in 609 innings during his career in Japan, but he did post a 1.82 ERA in seven starts in the Dominican Republic over the winter. The lefty will compete for a job in spring training.
Scott Podsednik, CF, Colorado RockiesTuesday 2/5, 2:22 PM CT
Scott Podsednik and the Rockies finalized a minor-league contract Tuesday. The oft-injured speedster will attempt to win a bench job in Colorado.
Brian Roberts, 2B, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 2/5, 12:59 PM CT
Erik Bedard is already on his way out of Baltimore, and ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports that, at some point, the Orioles and Cubs will finish the proposed deal for Brian Roberts. Pitcher Sean Gallagher would be the centerpiece of the package, with Felix Pie, Sean Marshall and Ronny Cedeno also being mentioned as possible parts of the trade.
Alex Rios, RF, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 2/5, 12:47 PM CT
The Blue Jays signed Alex Rios to a one-year, $4.835 million deal Tuesday, avoiding arbitration. He gets a $3.5 million signing bonus and would make an additional $15,000 if he is selected for the All-Star game. Rios hit .297 with 24 homers, 85 RBI 114 runs and 17 steals last year.
Josh Fogg, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 2/5, 9:02 AM CT
The Orioles are interested in bringing in free agent right-hander Josh Fogg, according to the Denver Post. The Post also reports that the Twins could be interested, though the Minneapolis Star-Tribune has shot down those rumors. The O's will have a big hole to fill once the Erik Bedard trade goes down, and although Fogg isn't in the same league as Bedard, he would at least give the club some depth.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 2/5, 8:54 AM CT
The Pirates and Freddy Sanchez have agreed to a two-year contract with an option for a third year. The deal is expected to be worth in the vicinity of $19 million, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Sanchez will get roughly $4.5 million in base pay for the coming season and about $6 million for the second season. He would get another raise in 2010 if the team exercises the option, though the option becomes guaranteed if the second baseman reaches a certain number of plate appearances over the next two years.
Joe Nathan, P, Minnesota TwinsTuesday 2/5, 8:39 AM CT
Joe Nathan, a free agent after the '08 season, would still like to stay in Minnesota despite the trade of Johan Santana. "Obviously, guys have moved on and will be missed," Nathan said in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "But I think they have made some good moves this offseason and have at least shown they're going to be competitive." The Twins have resumed discussions with Nathan's agent, Dave Pepe, about an extension, but so far no offers have been exchanged.
Armando Galarraga, P, Detroit TigersTuesday 2/5, 8:34 AM CT
The Tigers have traded minor league outfielder Michael Hernandez to the Rangers in exchange for right-hander Armando Galarraga. Galarraga made his major league debut last year, giving up one run over four relief innings but five runs over 4 2/3 frames in his lone start. He spent most of last year at Double-A Frisco, where he went 9-6 with a 4.02 ERA in 23 games. Galarraga will compete for a bullpen job in spring training, but he does have an option left and is likely to begin the year at Triple-A Toledo.
CC Sabathia, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 2/5, 8:27 AM CT
The Johan Santana deal has set the market for C.C. Sabathia, who will become a free agent after the 2008 season, and even though the Indians may not be able to afford to keep the lefty, GM Mark Shapiro believes it will be up to Sabathia whether or not he ends up staying in Cleveland. When asked to comment on Santana's contract and how it pertains to Sabathia, Shapiro told the Cleveland Plain Dealer: "You're asking the wrong person... There have been recent deals signed by pitchers as talented and capable as C.C., and in a more similar market than ours. But none of that matters. The only thing that matters is how relevant C.C. and his agents feel it is. Not to shift the burden to them, but I can't answer you how relevant it is." One thing Shapiro does know is that he can't see the Tribe dealing the reigning AL Cy Young winner. "I can't present you with a scenario where it's acceptable to us or to our relationship with our fans that involves trading C.C. or examining trading him," said Shapiro.
Erik Bedard, P, Seattle MarinersTuesday 2/5, 8:16 AM CT
The Baltimore Sun has confirmed that Adam Jones and George Sherrill were in Baltimore Monday for physicals, and the trade that would send them and three prospects to the O's for Erik Bedard could be announced in days. Bedard is expected to be in Seattle this week, perhaps as early as today, to take his physical. The three prospects in the deal are all pitchers: Chris Tillman, Tony Butler and Kam Mickolio.
