Jerry Hairston Jr., SS, Cincinnati RedsMonday 3/3, 11:53 PM CT
The Reds signed free agent Jerry Hairston to minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training, according to the Dayton Daily News. Hairston, played for Reds manager Dusty Baker in Chicago. Hairston is a long shot to make the final roster cut but could stick if he agrees to begin the season in Triple-A.
Corey Patterson, CF, Cincinnati RedsMonday 3/3, 11:45 PM CT
The Reds signed free agent outfielder Corey Patterson on Monday night, this according to the Dayton Daily News. Patterson received a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. Cincinnati's new skipper Dusty Baker is familiar with Patterson's abilities from their time together in Chicago.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsMonday 3/3, 10:51 PM CT
Jon Lieber worked the first two innings of Monday's win over the Mariners offering up two runs on three hits in the second inning. Lieber is fighting for a starting slot in the Cubs rotation. There is plenty of spring to impress his new team.
Jarrod Washburn, P, Seattle MarinersMonday 3/3, 10:43 PM CT
Jarrod Washburn worked three scoreless innings in his first Cactus League start in the Mariners Monday afternoon loss to the Cubs 6-5. The Seattle southpaw surrendering four hits and struck out one in the loss. Washburn is a reserve in mixed formats and a back end starter in AL-only formats.
John Bale, P, Kansas City RoyalsMonday 3/3, 9:23 PM CT
Lefty John Bale threw three scoreless innings on Monday as the Royals defeated the White Sox 7-6. Bale struck out four, giving him seven K's in five innings of spring work. Bale was signed during the 2007 season after spending three years in Japan. The southpaw will begin the season as specialist out of the bullpen but continued success this spring will raise question marks about his ability to get the team out of any jam with a strike out.
Joey Gathright, CF, Kansas City RoyalsMonday 3/3, 9:12 PM CT
Joey Gathright stole three bases, scored twice and recorded an RBI in big day for the speedster who is fighting for a starting role in a deep KC outfield. Last month Gathright told a reporter from the AP that he wouldn't be considered the team's fourth outfield had ex-manager Buddy Bell let him run last year. Last month, Gathright told a reporter from the AP that he wouldn't be considered the team's fourth outfield had ex-manager Buddy Bell let him run last year. Gathright certainly has the talent to steal at least 30 bases; in an everyday role the center fielder could likely steal closer to 50.
Alexei Ramirez, SS, Chicago White SoxMonday 3/3, 9:06 PM CT
Alexei Ramirez's hot bat continued on Monday as the young infielder hit a bases-loaded triple, making him 6-for-13 this spring. Ramirez's spring training average is .462.
Cole Hamels, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 3/3, 8:50 PM CT
Cole Hamels surrendered two home runs in his first start of the spring as the Phillies and Yanks ended Sunday's game in a 7-7 tie. Hamels, gave up long-balls to Jason Giambi in the first inning and Jason Lane in the second. Hamels was around the plate throwing 31 of his 44 pitches for strikes. This performance came a day after Philadelphia chose to renew his contract after the two sides were unable to agree to terms before Sunday's team-imposed deadline.
Jeff Francis, P, Colorado RockiesMonday 3/3, 8:42 PM CT
Jeff Francis threw 45 pitches in three innings of work on Sunday as the Rockies lost a 2-1 contest against Mexico. The Roks lefty allowed two hits and one earned run, and struck out two.
Jason Bay, LF, Boston Red SoxMonday 3/3, 7:50 PM CT
Jason Bay was limited to one hit in Sunday's loss to the Rays, but the center fielder's average is at .400 on the spring and he looks comfortable in all phases of his game. Bay didn't play in Monday's loss to the Phillies. The early round fantasy disappointment of a year ago, hit but .247 with 21 HR and four stolen bases. Those numbers followed a .286, 34 home run campaign. A return to his 2006 numbers makes the Pirate a draft day steal this March -- as he is leaving the draft boards in the middle-rounds of traditional formats.
B.J. Upton, CF, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 3/3, 7:41 PM CT
B.J. Upton led the Rays to victory over the Pirates on Sunday, and much of his success was a direct result of his speed. The outfielder had a two-run triple in the third after having doubled in the first inning. He later reached base on a walk and stole second before being pulled for backup Justin Ruggiano. Upton continues to raise his fantasy stock, shares that soared last year even with his move to the outfield.
Jeremy Bonderman, P, Detroit TigersMonday 3/3, 7:33 PM CT
Jeremy Bonderman tossed three scoreless innings in his second start of the spring, but the Tigers fell to the Rays 10-9 on Monday afternoon. The Tigers right-hander allowed two hits and struck out a pair. Bonderman was overvalued in most fantasy drafts a year ago and disappointed overall. His 11-9 record and 5.01 ERA didn't equate to a top-10 pitching option, which is where he was drafted in most formats.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 3/3, 7:28 PM CT
Matt Garza didn't impress in his first outing as a Ray. The ex-Twin needed 35 pitches to get through the first inning alone. Garza was knocked out of the game after he gave up one run on five hits allowed over 1 2/3 innings against Detroit. The Tampa prize of the six-player deal with the Twins will have his moments, but he will also have his hurdles, much like he did in his outing today.
Jonny Gomes, DH, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 3/3, 7:21 PM CT
Jonny Gomes went 2-3 on Monday with a home run and two runs scored. It was Gomes first home run of the spring but an important one. The right fielder is battling with veteran Cliff Floyd for the rights to the starting role. Unless Gomes has a landslide showing during camp, it's likely he and Floyd will platoon in right, with Floyd receiving more at-bats on the season. The ex-Met will face right-handers while Gomes would get the start against opposing lefty's.
Carlos Pena, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 3/3, 6:06 PM CT
Carlos Pena has taken up right were he left off last year as Comeback Player of the Year. Pena recored two hits and an RBI in Tampa's win over Detroit on Monday. The first baseman raised his average to .500 this spring.
Willy Aybar, 3B, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 3/3, 6:02 PM CT
Willy Aybar's two-run double in Monday's game against Detrot helped his cause for earning the starting third base gig in Tampa. Aybar was 2-3 with two RBI on the day raising his spring average to .300. Aybar is battling with would-be rookie Evan Longoria for the starting role at third.
Jo-Jo Reyes, P, Atlanta BravesMonday 3/3, 5:56 PM CT
Left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes, a candidate for the final slot in the Braves rotation, allowed two hits and a run in two innings of work on Monday. Reyes was 2-2 last year in 10 starts with a 6.22 ERA. Reyes' Achilles last year was his 30 walks in 50.2 innings pitched.
Noah Lowry, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 3/3, 3:54 PM CT
Noah Lowry had... um, a little problem finding the plate on Monday. In the first inning, the southpaw walked seven batters and threw two wild pitches, the Chicago Tribune reports. Lowry came back out in the second inning, walked two more hitters, and tossed a pick-off attempt into the stands. All told, he allowed four runs and no hits over one inning.
Bobby Crosby, SS, Oakland AthleticsMonday 3/3, 3:13 PM CT
Bobby Crosby was scratched from Monday's lineup due to back spasms. The issue popped up during pregame warm-ups, MLB.com reports. He is day-to-day.
Eric Chavez, 3B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 3/3, 3:10 PM CT
Eric Chavez admitted on Monday that he may not be ready for the start of the season. On Friday, he received an epidural to help alleviate his back pain. Chavez underwent surgery in November to repair two damaged discs. "Right now I'm staying very positive with him because all his rehabs went so well this winter," manager Bob Geren tells MLB.com. "This was just a minor setback. He got the treatment to hopefully calm it down. I'll know more about that and where he is in a week or two." Jack Hannahan would start if Chavez were out.
Hideki Matsui, DH, New York YankeesMonday 3/3, 2:58 PM CT
Hideki Matsui is slated to take batting practice on Monday. He tweaked his neck two days ago and is still rehabbing his right knee. "The running is the important part, the cutting," manager Joe Girardi tells MLB.com about the knee. "And he's not having any problems. When I saw him the first day in Spring Training, I [said], 'Wow, he looks great.'" Matsui is expected to be ready for opening day.
Brian Roberts, 2B, Baltimore OriolesMonday 3/3, 2:31 PM CT
The Orioles and Cubs are once again discussing a trade involving Brian Roberts, a source informs SI.com. The Orioles may send outfielder Jay Payton to Chicago in the deal.
Micah Owings, P, Cincinnati RedsMonday 3/3, 2:04 PM CT
Micah Owings will not make his scheduled start on Monday due to soreness behind his right shoulder. He has had such an issue in the past. “Yeah, that’s why I’m not too concerned about it,” Owings tells the Arizona Republic. “(I’ve felt it) from time to time. I think pitchers go through it from time to time, whether it’s early, middle or late in the season.” He is day-to-day.
Mike Pelfrey, P, New York MetsMonday 3/3, 1:39 PM CT
Mike Pelfrey worked three scoreless innings against the Braves on Monday. He allowed two hits, walked none, and struck out none. Pelfrey also tossed two scoreless frames in his previous start. He is battling Orlando Hernandez for the fifth spot in the rotation.
Jeremy Bonderman, P, Detroit TigersMonday 3/3, 1:30 PM CT
Jeremy Bonderman worked three scoreless innings against the Rays regulars on Monday. He allowed two hits, walked none, and struck out two. We're not sure if the Tigers allowed Bonderman to use his slider this time out, as they are still being cautious about his elbow. Either way, this line is promising.
Andrew Miller, P, Florida MarlinsMonday 3/3, 1:24 PM CT
The good news is that Andrew Miller held the Red Sox hitless over three innings on Monday. The bad news? Miller allowed one run thanks to the five walks he issued. Control was a major problem for Miller over his 13 starts with the Tigers in 2007, and the 21-year-old southpaw has to improve in this area before we'll take him seriously as a fantasy commodity.
Mike Mussina, P, New York YankeesMonday 3/3, 1:19 PM CT
Mike Mussina made his spring debut on Monday and allowed six hits and five runs (four earned) over two innings. He served up one homer, walked none, and struck out none.
Bartolo Colon, P, Boston Red SoxMonday 3/3, 1:07 PM CT
Bartolo Colon threw 42 pitches in a bullpen session on Monday morning. He tossed mainly fastballs and got up to 90 mph. Colon also threw some changeups. "For not being on the mound for 3 1/2 weeks, I thought he threw to both sides of the plate, he got through the glove well with good carry. A very good day for him," pitching coach John Farrell tells the Boston Globe.
Jose Vidro, DH, Seattle MarinersMonday 3/3, 1:02 PM CT
Jose Vidro has a sore right elbow and may miss a few days. It's "nothing major," manager John McLaren tells the Seattle Times. "We just don't want to have him swing during a game and hurt it worse."
Hanley Ramirez, SS, Florida MarlinsMonday 3/3, 11:20 AM CT
Hanley Ramirez won't play on Monday due to a sore left ankle, MLB.com reports. He collided with Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina on Sunday and is day-to-day. We're not worried about his fantasy value.
Jeff Francoeur, RF, Atlanta BravesMonday 3/3, 11:16 AM CT
The Braves have renewed Jeff Francoeur's contract for the 2008 season, MLB.com confirms. The outfielder was hoping to sign a long-term deal that would take him through his upcoming arbitration years.
B.J. Ryan, P, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 3/3, 9:53 AM CT
B.J. Ryan threw against minor league hitters in a batting practice session on Sunday. He tells MLB.com that he was able to concentrate on his mechanics, rather than the state of his surgically repaired left elbow. "That was the big thing for me today," Ryan explains. "You stop worrying about your arm, because you know it's OK, and now you start nitpicking things that you need to work on, which is where I want to be at right now." He threw 25 pitches in the session.
Chris Bootcheck, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 3/3, 9:47 AM CT
Chris Bootcheck suffered a left oblique injury on Sunday and had to leave the game in the fourth inning. "He felt something down his side," manager Mike Scioscia tells MLB.com. "It tightened up on him, so we'll get it checked." Bootcheck is day-to-day.
John Lackey, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 3/3, 9:43 AM CT
John Lackey did not throw a bullpen session on Sunday. Instead, he took an extra day of long toss in order to work out the tightness in his right elbow, MLB.com reports. Lackey plans to throw in the bullpen on Monday and possibly start on Friday.
Ryan Sweeney, CF, Oakland AthleticsMonday 3/3, 9:40 AM CT
Ryan Sweeney hopes to return to action by Tuesday, MLB.com reports. He bruised his left knee on Thursday.
Chris Iannetta, C, Colorado RockiesMonday 3/3, 9:34 AM CT
Chris Iannetta made it very clear on Sunday that he doesn't want to spend any more time in the minors. "I don't know how Triple-A at-bats are going to transfer into big-league at-bats," he tells the Denver Post. "Personally, I think that's pretty dumb." Iannetta is behind Yorvit Torrealba on the pecking order.
Shawn Chacon, P, Houston AstrosMonday 3/3, 9:31 AM CT
Shawn Chacon was happy with his work on Sunday, although he served up a two-run home run to Ryan Zimmerman. "I'm right on schedule," Chacon tells the Houston Chronicle. "The command of my fastball is probably a little bit ahead of where it has been in the past. But my mechanics coming into spring are pretty solid right now."
Lance Berkman, 1B, Houston AstrosMonday 3/3, 9:27 AM CT
Lance Berkman made his spring debut on Sunday and had no issues with his strained right oblique muscle. "It was fine," he tells the Houston Chronicle. "It was good. I didn't have any problems with it." Berkman went 1-4 with an RBI double on the day.
Carlos Carrasco, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 3/3, 9:22 AM CT
Carlos Carrasco worked three scoreless innings against the Yankees on Sunday and has retired 11 of the 13 batters he has faced this spring. He tells the Philadelphia Daily News that he hopes to compete for a rotation spot. Carrasco doesn't turn 21 until March 21. The right-hander is almost certainly headed back to the minors, but he is making a good impression with the Phillies and with keeper league fantasy owners.
Danny Richar, 2B, Cincinnati RedsMonday 3/3, 9:13 AM CT
Danny Richar will make his first start of the spring on Monday. He tells the Chicago Tribune that he dealt with a back injury this winter, which is why he was limited to only 78 at-bats in the Dominican League. "I think everything is going to be OK," Richar says. "I trust myself and I'm ready to play hard and show them I'm ready." He is in a four-way battle for the starting second base job.
Scott Schoeneweis, P, New York MetsMonday 3/3, 9:08 AM CT
The Mets are shopping relievers Jorge Sosa and Scott Schoeneweis, the New York Daily News confirms.
Hanley Ramirez, SS, Florida MarlinsMonday 3/3, 9:05 AM CT
Hanley Ramirez may be able to start on Monday, one day after a rough collision with Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina. Ramirez was slow to get up and favored his left leg after running into Molina. He tells MLB.com that his left ankle is "just a little sore." Ramirez had no problems with his surgically repaired left shoulder.
