Miguel Olivo, C, Kansas City RoyalsFriday 3/14, 11:55 PM CT
Royals catcher Miguel Olivo left Friday's game after four innings because of a groin injury, according to MLB.com. Olivo showed signs of discomfort after backing away from an inside fastball thrown by Texas Rangers right-hander Elizardo Ramirez. Olivo struck out and was replaced by Matt Tupman. Olivo is the Royals' backup to catcher John Buck and this was his 10th Cactus League game. He's batting .296 (8-for-27).
Brian Giles, RF, San Diego PadresFriday 3/14, 11:52 PM CT
Brian Giles returned to action on Friday afternoon on a practice field in a Minor League game, according to MLB.com. Giles, who had surgery on his right knee at the start of the off-season, batted four times in the first three innings and received a paucity of hittable pitches. He faced four different pitchers and hit a run-scoring single up the middle, walked twice and struck out looking. Giles did not play defense or run the bases, and he won't Saturday either, when he plays in another Minor League game. But he could be doing so by Monday in Tucson, AZ, weather permitting, as rain is a possibility on Sunday and Monday. It's all part of the plan Giles and the Padres have in place to get him ready for the regular season. "Opening Day is our date," Giles said. "We've kind of got a schedule from here until we're done with camp with the idea of being ready on the 31st [of March]."
Marcus Giles, 2B, Friday 3/14, 10:49 PM CT
As his bid for the starting job at 2B continues, so does Marcus Giles 's ability to prove such a stance is worthy. Giles went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI in the Rockies' 4-9 loss to Seattle today. Giles is a veteran with a strong bat and a stronger sense of his mortality rate in Colorado. The big outings in recent days only proves he wants to be on the field. If he keeps it up, he'll get his wish.
Yuniesky Betancourt, SS, Seattle MarinersFriday 3/14, 10:45 PM CT
Yuniesky Betancourt continues to show strong bat potential since being moved up in the order. In today's 9-4 win over the Rockies, Betancourt hit third in the order, going 2-for-4 with a run scored (and was caught stealing). Suddenly the SS for the Mariners is starting to become rather attractive, hitting well and proving he deserves a shot in an active batting order.
Franklin Morales, P, Colorado RockiesFriday 3/14, 10:38 PM CT
Franklin Morales got the start for the Rockies today and gave little indication that a position on the major league roster on opening day was eminent, giving up nine runs on 10 hits (though only five of those runs were earned) through 2 2/3 innings, walking two and collecting two strikeouts with a wild pitch and a balk. To be fair, Morales has looked much better in his spring starts in recent weeks. The hope was to see Morales battle and earn a spot in the bullpen. At this point, it is difficult to determine what may happen over the next two weeks.
Matt Belisle, P, Cincinnati RedsFriday 3/14, 10:32 PM CT
Cincinnati starting hopeful Matt Matt Belisle pitched three innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits in the Reds' 7-7 10-inning tie with the Yankees today, a troubling outing to say the least. Belisle is carrying a ton of weight on his shoulders after struggling to an 8-9 record last season, and to make matters worse, fellow rotation competitor Josh Fogg enjoyed a great day against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Boof Bonser, P, Minnesota TwinsFriday 3/14, 10:09 PM CT
Boof Bonser bounced back nicely from a disappointment in his last outing to pitch four scoreless innings in the Twins’ 4-1 win over the split-squad Pirates today. Bonser allowed three hits and a walk, striking out three, and now sports a spring ERA of 3.00. Bonser has stated he hopes to pitch at least 200 innings this season, coming off an ’07 season in which he threw just 173 and went 8-12 with an ERA of 5.10. Adding an improving changeup to the menu of pitches seems to be helping, though it is a work in progress.
John Rodriguez, OF, New York MetsFriday 3/14, 10:00 PM CT
Hoping to gain attention for a potential spot on the major league roster, phenom OF John Rodriguez enjoyed a strong outing in the Rays' 8-4 win over the Blue Jays in Grapefruit League action today, hitting 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Coming via trade from St. Louis, Rodriguez fits the mold of the typical TB star on the rise: Find a roadblock on another team, get sent to Tampa where kids get a chance to shine on the main stage, and make good on the opportunity. The outfield in Tampa, beyond Carl Crawford, is a bit of a mess, thus J-Rod should have a shot to make noise.
B.J. Ryan, P, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 3/14, 9:54 PM CT
For the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery 10 months ago, Toronto reliever B.J. Ryan pitched in a game, earning two strikeouts on three batters in the Blue Jays’ 4-8 loss to Tampa Bay today, according to the Associated Press. This was Ryan’s first appearance since last April. “It was good,” Ryan told reporters. “I kind of went out there anxious and nervous, not really knowing what to expect because it’s the first time being back out there, and I didn’t want to feel my way around the way like I did in those simulated games. We didn’t hold anything back. We moved it around both sides of the plate, threw a couple of good breaking balls and a couple of crummy ones. But I figured that’s what was going to happen.” Now the Jays wait to see how Ryan’s arm feels tomorrow. If there is no pain, that is a great sign and the closer could be on track to once again working as a force in those final innings.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 3/14, 9:38 PM CT
John Maine worked five innings without surrendering a run in the Mets’ 8-2 victory over the Florida Marlins in the Grapefruit League today. In his most impressive outing yet, Maine gave up just three hits with one walk and six strikeouts on the day. That brings Maine to 10 consecutive innings without giving up a run. You can be the fantasy faithful are taking note as Maine’s stock rises.
Ricky Nolasco, P, Florida MarlinsFriday 3/14, 9:25 PM CT
Ricky Nolasco , on pace to become a starter of significance for a hurting Florida rotation, suffered through a difficult outing in the Marlins’ 8-2 loss to the Mets in Grapefruit League action today, according to the Associated Press. Nolasco pitched two innings, surrendering seven hits and a whopping six runs with two walks and a strikeout. The Marlins may be struggling for comfort at this point as several of the team’s primary starters are suffering from injury and Nolasco was viewed as one of the few healthy-and-capable arms in the rotation. Today’s outing shows he may not be ready for the show just yet. Meanwhile, RHP prospect Burke Badenhop looked strong, allowing just three hits through four innings without a run scored. It seems like a long shot, but with the woes that have already become an issue, Badenhop may be in the mix for a starting job.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 3/14, 9:06 PM CT
In his first outing of the spring, 2B Freddy Sanchez earned praise as one of very few bright spots in the 0-5 shutout loss to the Cincinnati Reds, hitting 2-for-4 and serving as the only player with multiple hits for the Pirates. Sanchez has been rehabbing from shoulder surgery and worked as the DH to avoid unneeded strain as a fielder. The Pirates will continue to use caution in getting Sanchez back on the field, but today’s game is a good sign of things to come.
Josh Fogg, P, Cincinnati RedsFriday 3/14, 9:00 PM CT
Josh Fogg pitched five innings and combined with four relief pitchers to hold the Pittsburgh Pirates to just six hitter as the Reds emerged victorious 5-0 in a split-squad game for both teams, according to the Associated Press. Fogg allowed three hits and a walk while striking out three. Fogg, who won 10 games for National League champion Colorado last season, did not sign with Cincinnati as a free agent until after spring training started last month. He has given up only three runs in 13 innings in four games despite the late start, a great voice of support for his effort to earn a spot in the bottom of the Reds' starting rotation.
Scott Thorman, 1B, Atlanta BravesFriday 3/14, 8:52 PM CT
With rumors abound that the Braves are actively shopping 1B Scott Thorman , the recent performances may suggest a need for re-evaluation. Early spring struggles appear to be subsided as the upswing first bagger is finding his groove at the plate. In today’s 9-1 trouncing of the Philadelphia Phillies, Thorman went 1-for-3 with a home run, earning three RBIs. That’s seven RBIs in Thorman’s last two games. It may be the Braves should consider retaining the man they are shopping rather than hoping unproven options (namely Mark Kotsay, Brayan Pena, and Matt Diaz) rise to the occasion.
Francisco Rosario, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 3/14, 8:37 PM CT
RHP Francisco Rosario suffered through a horrific outing today in the Phillies’ 1-9 loss to the Atlanta Braves in the Grapefruit League today, surrendering six runs on three hits, two walks, and two hit batters through just two innings of work. The bulk of the damage (though none of it was positive) came via a grand slam by SS Yunel Escobar in the second inning. Rosario, attempting to secure the fifth spot in the Phillies’ starting rotation, has been strong in spring training until today, sporting an ERA of 1.04 through 8 2/3 innings spent working out of the bullpen. Today’s performance is a concern but should not hamper Rosario’s efforts greatly. He clearly has work to do but has been a positive note thus far.
Jeremy Sowers, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 3/14, 7:02 PM CT
Jeremy Sowers found troubles on the mound in Cleveland’s 8-4 win over the Washington Nationals in the Grapefruit League today, filling four innings by giving up five hits, two walks, and two runs. This was a spring of great importance for Sowers, coming off a heartbreaking ’07 campaign with struggles that continue to plague his outings in spring training. With his second rough outing in a row, it is becoming more difficult to view Sowers as a likely component of the Indians’ major league roster on opening day.
Elijah Dukes, RF, Washington NationalsFriday 3/14, 6:55 PM CT
Elijah Dukes strained his right hamstring sliding into second base in the bottom of the third inning of today’s 8-4 loss for the Nationals, falling to the Cleveland Indians in Grapefruit League action, according to the Associated Press. According to Dukes, “It was almost like a little strain or cramp kind of feeling.” The injury is not considered serious by any means and the Nationals are hoping Dukes can get back in the lineup and continue his work towards earning a spot in the outfield rotation in quick order.
Andy LaRoche, 3B, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 3/14, 6:47 PM CT
3B Andy LaRoche , nursing a torn ligament in his right thumb, should get his soft cast off in just over two weeks and begin rehabbing, likely in extended spring training in Vero Beach, according to the Associated Press. The injury, along with the concerns of failing durability that might befall Jeff Kent, is feeding rumors that state the Dodgers are seeking to make a trade to bring a versatile infielder into the fold. Today's timeline shows the team is laying plans, but the future remains uncertain.
Kyle Lohse, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 3/14, 6:40 PM CT
Following an earlier report, the Cardinals have signed RHP Kyle Lohse to a one-year contract, according to the Associated Press. His deal could reach $5 million in incentives. Lohse pitched for Philadelphia and Cincinnati last season, going a combined 9-12 with a 4.62 ERA. He will throw a simulated game on Monday and should get worked into games after that.
Rick Ankiel, CF, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 3/14, 6:36 PM CT
Rick Ankiel , viewed as the likely opening-day starter in centerfield for the Cardinals, hit two home runs for a total of four RBIs in St. Louis’ 6-4 win over the Dodgers in Grapefruit League action today, according to the Associated Press. This brings Ankiel’s spring-training batting average to .359 and today’s homers are his second and third of camp. Nothing is certain at this point, but it appears Ankiel is all but inked into the position for opening day.
Dennis Sarfate, P, Baltimore OriolesFriday 3/14, 6:26 PM CT
Projected middle reliever Dennis Sarfate may have introduced a few questions into Baltimore’s pitching scenario today, giving up two runs in 1/3 of an inning in the Orioles’ 4-7 loss to the Red Sox today. Sarfate surrendered three hits, two walks, and picked up a K in the outing, but the struggles leave questions. Sarfate is being counted on to provide quality middle relief for the O’s in the early weeks of the season while hopes of watching him rise to create competition for the closer job, a spot currently filled by George Sherrill, were evident. Those hopes seem to be, at the very least, questionable after today’s debacle.
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF, Boston Red SoxFriday 3/14, 6:17 PM CT
As Coco Crisp continues to miss time with a groin injury, Jacoby Ellsbury continues to make his case for starting in centerfield. Ellsbury went 1-for-3 with a double in Boston’s 7-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles in spring training today. Ellsbury has enjoyed a nice spring and, following last season’s outstanding introduction in the World Series, there are high expectations that have many pondering if the Sox will be trading Crisp away. Crisp has been sidelined for 11 straight days now, missing prime opportunities to compete for the job, prove his value, or earn and bolster consideration from potential trade suitors.
Jesse Crain, P, Minnesota TwinsFriday 3/14, 3:58 PM CT
Jesse Crain had his knee examined Friday and was told he needed no X-rays, according to MLB.com. "They told me right now they don't think it's any kind of a fracture or anything," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He should be fine in a couple of days." Crain took a line drive off the joint on Thursday, but it sounds like he'll be all right.
Andy Pettitte, P, New York YankeesFriday 3/14, 3:49 PM CT
Andy Pettitte played some long toss and was able to throw 42 pitches in a bullpen session on Friday, according to the AP. "It felt real good," Pettitte said. "I was able to stretch it out in my long toss. For me to back up the distance in my long toss like I did, I knew I wasn't going to have any problems. ... Stretch out like that in long toss, you know your arm is good." He was scratched from Wednesday's game due to soreness in the outside of his elbow, but he should be ready to face the Red Sox on Monday.
Rafael Soriano, P, Atlanta BravesFriday 3/14, 3:44 PM CT
The Braves expect Rafael Soriano to make his exhibition debut on Saturday, according to MLB.com. He's dealt with a stomach virus and a sore elbow but should have enough time to get ready for the season opener.
John Smoltz, P, Atlanta BravesFriday 3/14, 3:38 PM CT
John Smoltz is slated to make his Grapefruit League debut on Saturday in a split-squad game against the Rays, according to MLB.com. Smoltz is just bringing himself along slowly this spring, working a few simulated games instead of playing in exhibition contests. He's right on schedule for the start of the regular season.
Wily Mo Pena, LF, Washington NationalsFriday 3/14, 3:20 PM CT
An MRI revealed that Wily Mo Pena has a significant tear of his left oblique, according to the AP. The injury is expected to sideline him for about a month, which means he will miss the start of the regular season. Look for Elijah Dukes to replace Pena in left field, though Alex Escobar and Ryan Langerhans could figure into the mix.
Jonny Gomes, DH, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 3/14, 1:41 PM CT
Jonny Gomes has been handed a two-game suspension from Major League Baseball for bum-rushing Shelley Duncan during Thursday's game. Gomes didn't care for Shelley Duncan's spikes-high slide into second base and ran in from right field to tackle Duncan. Gomes may appeal the suspension.
Melky Cabrera, CF, New York YankeesFriday 3/14, 1:37 PM CT
Melky Cabrera has received a three-game suspension for his actions during a bench-clearing incident with the Rays on Thursday, according to SportsTicker. If he doesn't appeal the suspension, it will begin on opening day.
Shelley Duncan, 1B, New York YankeesFriday 3/14, 1:35 PM CT
Major League Baseball has suspended Shelley Duncan for the first three games of the season for his role in Thursday's rumble with the Rays, according to SportsTicker. He could appeal the suspension, in which case he would be allowed to keep playing until his case is heard.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 3/14, 10:50 AM CT
Joel Pineiro will have his shoulder examined on Friday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He hopes to be cleared to play catch, but it's not clear how quickly he might be able to get back on the mound.
Wily Mo Pena, LF, Washington NationalsFriday 3/14, 10:42 AM CT
Wily Mo Pena strained his left oblique while taking batting practice on Wednesday, according to the Washington Post. At this point, he's listed as day-to-day, but since oblique strains can linger for weeks, this could affect his status for the start of the regular season.
Greg Maddux, P, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 3/14, 10:36 AM CT
Greg Maddux only got in about half of his scheduled outing Thursday after taking a line drive off his thigh, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "It's the perfect place to get hit," said Maddux. "It's a minor contusion. No worries – for me, anyway. I ain't worried about it. Perfect spring training injury. It's got me out of running the next couple of days." Assuming he's back in action for his next scheduled outing, the ailment shouldn't affect him for the beginning of the season.
Mark Grudzielanek, 2B, Kansas City RoyalsFriday 3/14, 10:23 AM CT
Mark Grudzielanek returned to Kansas City on Thursday to undergo what the Royals dubbed as precautionary tests to determine the cause of tightness in his lower back, according to the KC Star. "I’m not really concerned," manager Trey Hillman said. "He’s had this before. If this was the regular season, it wouldn’t be a (disabled-list) situation. But rather than be aggressive with it, because it’s March 13, we decided to send him back to see Dr. Joyce because Dr. Joyce has always evaluated him in the past." He should rejoin the team Saturday, but hopefully results of the testing will be released on Friday. Grud's 37 years old and missed action last year while recovering from two knee surgeries, so this is something to keep an eye on.
Kazuo Matsui, 2B, Houston AstrosFriday 3/14, 10:12 AM CT
Kazuo Matsui said he's feeling better and is aiming to return to game action this weekend, according to the Houston Chronicle. Matsui has been sidelined due to an anal fissure.
Jose Valverde, P, Houston AstrosFriday 3/14, 10:09 AM CT
Jose Valverde will skip his scheduled Friday appearance due to a stiff back, according to the Houston Chronicle. "I'll take two or three days off and after that things will be OK," Valverde said. Assuming that holds true, this should have no effect on his preparation for the beginning of the regular season.
J.R. Towles, C, Houston AstrosFriday 3/14, 10:06 AM CT
The Astros hope that J.R. Towles will be able to return to action early next week, according to the Houston Chronicle. "He's making progress," manager Cecil Cooper said. "If things go the way we hope, (he'll return) the early part of next week or by the middle." Towles strained his right hamstring five days ago, but it appears to be a relatively minor ailment.
Vance Wilson, C, Detroit TigersFriday 3/14, 9:55 AM CT
Tigers manager Jim Leyland confirmed Thursday that Vance Wilson will not be ready when the season begins, according to the Detroit Free Press. Wilson is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, and it's not clear who will replace him as Pudge Rodriguez's backup.
Ivan Rodriguez, C, New York YankeesFriday 3/14, 9:53 AM CT
Ivan Rodriguez said he used "heavier weights" and "didn't do the bicycle as much" while working out during the offseason, so he would be stronger this season, according to the Detroit Free Press. "I worked hard to get ready for the season," Rodriguez said. "I lifted a lot of weights, did a lot of running and mentally got in good shape. I got a focus." Pudge hit 11 home runs all of last season, but he already has six this spring, so it looks like the work is paying off.
Fernando Rodney, P, Detroit TigersFriday 3/14, 9:47 AM CT
Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Thursday that he considers Fernando Rodney "unlikely" to be ready for the start of the regular season, according to the Detroit Free Press. The news is not surprising, since elbow stiffness has kept him from taking part in a spring game thus far.
Jason Vargas, P, New York MetsFriday 3/14, 9:41 AM CT
Jason Vargas is expected to require to surgery to repair a tear in his hip, according to the New York Daily News. He likely will need about three months to recover from the procedure.
Orlando Hernandez, P, New York MetsFriday 3/14, 9:38 AM CT
Orlando Hernandez will not take part in an exhibition game until at least the final week of spring training, according to the New York Daily News. The Mets are bringing him along slowly to keep him healthy for the long haul, but he's on target to start April 12.
Hideki Matsui, DH, New York YankeesFriday 3/14, 9:34 AM CT
Hideki Matsui made his first appearance in the outfield Thursday and looked fine, even making a running catch in the second inning, according to the New York Daily News. Matsui underwent offseason knee surgery but should be fine for the opening day.
Andy Pettitte, P, New York YankeesFriday 3/14, 9:31 AM CT
Andy Pettitte reported not soreness on the outside of his elbow after playing catch on Thursday, according to the New York Daily News. He'll throw a side session Friday and a short bullpen session Saturday. Pettitte was scratched from his scheduled Wednesday start due to inflammation in the joint, but he should be ready to face the Red Sox on Monday.
Kevin Frandsen, 2B, San Francisco GiantsFriday 3/14, 9:20 AM CT
Kevin Frandsen has been slowed recently by a sore Achilles tendon and was plunked on the helmet by a pitch Thursday, forcing him to exit the game, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Manager Bruce Bochy said Frandsen could have stayed in the game. Frandsen already has been replaced at shortstop by Brian Bocock this spring, and any chance he had to bump Ray Durham off second is gone; Durham is hitting .387 in exhibition action, while Frandsen is hitting just .226.
Brian Anderson, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 3/14, 9:08 AM CT
Brian Anderson has given up his attempt to return to baseball. An MRI revealed that he tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow for the third time, according to the AP. He's already had two Tommy John surgeries to repair the previous injuries, but this one will end his career.
Franklin Gutierrez, RF, Cleveland IndiansFriday 3/14, 8:59 AM CT
Franklin Gutierrez hasn't played the past couple of days due to tightness in his legs, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Hopefully, he will be able to resume his quest for a starting spot in the Indians outfield on Friday against the Nats.
Brian Slocum, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 3/14, 8:55 AM CT
The Indians optioned Brian Slocum to Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. It's not a surprise that he was sent down, but he strained his hamstring before Wednesday's scheduled start, which basically made it final.
Andy Marte, 3B, Cleveland IndiansFriday 3/14, 8:50 AM CT
Andy Marte has lacked consistency this spring. "He's had good days and bad days," manager Eric Wedge said, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I think he's been a little tentative defensively. He's shown signs offensively. I want to see him be more consistent with his offense and defense." The only consistent thing Marte has done is hit poorly this spring, going 5-for-27 at the plate. The third baseman has been tested out at first and the outfield to increase his versatility. That's because he's out of minor league options, so he has to stay on the roster or be exposed to waivers, and his versatility could give him a little more value to the Indians. As it stands now, he's not in line for much playing time when the season begins.
David Ross, C, Boston Red SoxFriday 3/14, 8:41 AM CT
David Ross hopes to be able to hit on Friday, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. He was able to catch Thursday without any problems. Ross is battling back spasms and has yet to take part in an exhibition game this spring.
Scott Olsen, P, Florida MarlinsFriday 3/14, 8:20 AM CT
Scott Olsen tossed a bullpen session Thursday and will work a simulated game Sunday, but his sore shoulder will keep him out for opening day, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. If he has no setbacks with the tendinitis in the joint, Olsen should take part in a spring game next week and make his regular-season debut on April 4.
Chris Bootcheck, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 3/14, 8:13 AM CT
Chris Bootcheck remains doubtful to be ready for the start of the regular season, according to the LA Times. "I wouldn't rule it out, but the emphasis needs to be on being 100 percent, so when you're asked to go out there and help the team you can do it without holding back or guarding anything," said Bootcheck. He's dealing with a strained left oblique, an injury that needs to be dealt with cautiously to avoid an extensive setback.
Scot Shields, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 3/14, 8:08 AM CT
Scot Shields was happy with his first appearance of the spring on Thursday, according to the LA Times. "It was a good day for the most part -- the ball was coming out of my hand in mid- season form, and there was no pain," said Shields. The set-up man has been slowed this spring by a sore shoulder, but he should be ready for the opener, barring a setback.
Brian Roberts, 2B, Baltimore OriolesFriday 3/14, 7:59 AM CT
The Cubs have upped the ante in their attempt to acquire Brian Roberts from the Orioles. On Thursday, they added prospect Jose Ceda to the mix, according to the Chicago Tribune. Infielder Ronny Cedeno and pitchers Sean Gallagher and Donnie Veal are the other players offered up by the Cubs. Despite the daily updates, it appears most likely that a deal won't be completed until opening day nears. Stay tuned.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 3/14, 7:49 AM CT
Miguel Montero had another CT scan on his broken right index finger, according to the Arizona Republic. The results showed improvement in the digit, but he was told to rest it for another week. "Based on not having another week, it's going to be real difficult to get him ready for the start of the season," manager Doug Melvin said. Hopefully Montero will be available soon after the season begins, but clearly he's all but out for opening day.
Micah Owings, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 3/14, 7:44 AM CT
Micah Owings allowed three runs (two earned), five hits and three walks over 2 2/3 innings during Thursday's Cactus League game. "You like to see results every time," manager Bob Melvin said, according to the Arizona Republic. "Some days it's just not going to happen. Right now, he's going through a little bit of a funk as far as his command." Owings has allowed 12 hits, eight walks and eight earned runs in just 6 1/3 innings this spring, so clearly the Diamondbacks need to see him step things up soon in preparation for the beginning of the regular season.
Max Scherzer, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 3/14, 7:39 AM CT
The Diamondbacks have optioned Max Scherzer to their minor league camp, according to the Arizona Republic. "It did a lot for my confidence to know that I can have success in the big leagues, it's just a matter of doing it consistently," Scherzer said. "I learned that quick from all my outings. I had the ability to pitch, but there are other things that dictate whether you stay here. So it gives me a good taste to go back down to the minors and work on stuff and I hope to get up here as quick as I can." He may end up being a reliever, but the Diamondbacks will use him as a starter with Triple-A Tucson when the season begins.
Jim Hoey, P, Baltimore OriolesFriday 3/14, 7:28 AM CT
Jim Hoey headed back to Baltimore Wednesday to have an MRI taken of his right shoulder, according to the Baltimore Sun. "We got a good report on Jim," Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said. "I don't know how long it's going to be, but the MRI didn't reveal anything of any structural concerns. I don't know whether it's a week, three weeks or what. All I know is there is nothing in there that's a concern long term." Hoey may rejoin the team on Friday to begin a treatment program, but it's not clear when he'll pitch again.
Rafael Soriano, P, Atlanta BravesFriday 3/14, 7:18 AM CT
Braves manager Bobby Cox said Thursday that Rafael Soriano is "real close" to pitching in a exhibition game, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Their closer has yet to work in a game this spring due to a stomach virus and a sore elbow, but hopefully we'll see him on a mound this weekend.
Jo-Jo Reyes, P, Atlanta BravesFriday 3/14, 7:14 AM CT
Jo-Jo Reyes allowed seven hits, two walks and five runs over three innings to the Tigers on Thursday. "Jo-Jo had a rough day with his control and location," manager Bobby Cox said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Reyes is trying to win a spot in the rotation but hasn't performed well his last two outings. He may end up beginning the season at Triple-A Richmond, if he can't turn it around quickly.
Chuck James, P, Atlanta BravesFriday 3/14, 7:08 AM CT
Chuck James gave up one hit and retired six of the seven batters he faced during Thursday's exhibition game, though he had some tightness in his injured shoulder, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "It felt good, as far as no pain. When I was done pitching it tightened up a little, but I guess that's normal for this stage," James said. James has a slight tear in his rotator cuff and has been brought along slowly this spring. At this point, all signs point to him beginning the season at Triple-A Richmond.
