Jon Rauch, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 4/4, 11:48 PM CT
With Chad Cordero going on the DL, Jon Rauch will continue to serve as the Nats' ninth-inning option. Rauch has picked up a save and a win in his first two appearances this year. Cordero will be eligible to return in a week, but Rauch is a good pickup in the meantime.
Chad Cordero, P, Washington NationalsFriday 4/4, 11:46 PM CT
The Nationals placed Chad Cordero on the DL Friday with right shoulder tendinitis, according to the AP. It will be retroactive to March 27, making Cordero eligible to return next Friday. “We just felt this was the best for him,” manager Manny Acta said. “We didn’t want to rush him back.” Jon Rauch will serve as the team's stopper while Cordero is out.
Craig Monroe, CF, Minnesota TwinsFriday 4/4, 11:38 PM CT
With the injury to Michael Cuddyer, Craig Monroe should get the bulk of playing time in left field for the Twins, with Delmon Young sliding over to right field. Jason Kubel should start most of the time at DH.
Denard Span, RF, Minnesota TwinsFriday 4/4, 11:36 PM CT
The Twins recalled Denard Span from Triple-A Rochester Friday to replace the injured Michael Cuddyer on the roster. Span lost out on the starting center field job in spring training to Carlos Gomez. Span should back up at all three outfield spot, but expect Craig Monroe to get the bulk of time in left field.
Michael Cuddyer, RF, Minnesota TwinsFriday 4/4, 11:33 PM CT
The Twins placed Michael Cuddyer on the DL after Friday's game with a dislocated right index finger on his right hand. To replace him on the roster, the team recalled Denard Span from Triple-A Rochester. Span is expected to be in uniform Saturday.
Rick Ankiel, CF, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 4/4, 11:01 PM CT
Rick Ankiel hit a mammoth two-run homer in Friday's win over Washington. It's the pitcher-turned-hitter's second dinger on the year, to go along with four RBI and a .333 batting average. It's still tough to know what to expect from Ankiel. He's sure to go through plenty of rough patches, but his power is absolutely legit.
Brian Barton, LF, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 4/4, 10:54 PM CT
Brian Barton was 2-for-4 with a run scored Friday in his first career start. He played left field and batted leadoff for the Cards. The Rule 5 pick has three hits in six at-bats this year and should start getting more playing time against lefties.
Shawn Riggans, C, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 4/4, 10:52 PM CT
With Dioner Navarro on the DL, Shawn Riggans should get the bulk of the starts at catcher for the Rays over the next couple weeks. He's a pretty good hitter and is worth a pickup in AL-only play.
Mike DiFelice, C, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 4/4, 10:51 PM CT
The Rays purchased the contract of Mike DiFelice from Triple-A Durham Friday. He replaces the injured Dioner Navarro on the roster, but Shawn Riggans should get most of the starts behind the plate.
Dioner Navarro, C, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 4/4, 10:50 PM CT
Dioner Navarro was placed on the DL after Friday's game with lacerations on the middle and ring fingers of his right hand, according to the St. Petersburg Times. The Rays purchased the contract of Mike DiFelice from Triple-A Durham. Expect Shawn Riggans to get the bulk of the time behind the plate while Navarro is out.
Javier Valentin, C, Cincinnati RedsFriday 4/4, 10:10 PM CT
Javier Valentin exited Friday's game in the sixth inning with an apparent leg injury, according to the AP. Paul Bako replaced Valentin in the game. With David Ross already on the DL, the Reds can ill afford to lose Valentin for an extended period of time.
Carlos Gomez, CF, Minnesota TwinsFriday 4/4, 10:00 PM CT
Carlos Gomez was 3-for-4 with a run scored and swiped two more bases Friday in a win over Kansas City. Gomez has four steals already on the year, and it's clear that the speedster is going to have the green light to run at all times.
Jorge Posada, C, New York YankeesFriday 4/4, 9:53 PM CT
Jorge Posada was originally supposed to catch Friday night, but he told the team during warmups he wasn’t ready, according to the AP. Posada was in the DH spot instead and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts at the plate. Perhaps he should have waited another day or two to return from his shoulder injury.
Ryan Doumit, C, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 4/4, 9:29 PM CT
Ryan Doumit is making it hard for the Pirates to sit him. Doumit got another start Friday and responded with three hits, including his first homer of the year. He's batting .533 in 15 at-bats this year and is starting to distance himself from Ronny Paulino in the battle for playing time behind the plate.
Ian Kennedy, P, New York YankeesFriday 4/4, 9:26 PM CT
Ian Kennedy gave up just four runs in his three starts last year. On his first start of 2008 he gave up six. The righty pitched just 2 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and four walks while striking out two. Kennedy relies on pinpoint control to be successful, and he didn't have it Friday.
Shaun Marcum, P, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 4/4, 9:23 PM CT
Shaun Marcum held the powerful Red Sox offense at bay Friday, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out eight over seven innings. The righty had just allowed one hit entering the seventh, but J.D. Drew followed a walk and a single with a three-run blast. Still, Marcum picks up the win and should be thrilled with his first outing of the year.
Michael Cuddyer, RF, Minnesota TwinsFriday 4/4, 9:19 PM CT
Michael Cuddyer suffered a dislocated finger on his right hand when he slid into third base Friday, according to the AP. He was taken to the hospital for X-rays. The news seems like it could have been worse for Cuddyer, but we'll reserve judgment until he gets the X-rays. Consider him day-to-day for the time being.
Hank Blalock, 3B, Texas RangersFriday 4/4, 9:13 PM CT
Hank Blalock was a late scratch from Friday's lineup due to the flu, according to the Dallas Morning News. He has been dealing with the illness most of the week but had been playing through it. Ramon Vazquez replaced Blalock in the lineup.
Michael Cuddyer, RF, Minnesota TwinsFriday 4/4, 8:41 PM CT
Michael Cuddyer left Friday's game after jamming his right hand into the leg of the Royals' Alex Gordon while sliding into third base, according to the AP. The outfielder had a problem with his right thumb last year, but it's not clear if he aggravated that old injury. We'll update you on his status when more is known. Jason Kubel replaced Cuddyer.
Eric Chavez, 3B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 4/4, 8:26 PM CT
Eric Chavez could be sidelined another month after undergoing his second epidural in less than five weeks, according to the AP. He will need a minimum of 2-3 weeks of rehab at the team’s spring training facility before resuming baseball activities. “At least (that long),” Oakland trainer Steve Sayles said. “He’s returning to Phoenix and will go back into rehab. We’re just going to take it from there.” Sayles said the second epidural was for spasms in the lower left side of Chavez’s back, while the first was for spasms on the right side. Jack Hannahan will continue to fill in at third for the A's while Chavez is out.
John Smoltz, P, Atlanta BravesFriday 4/4, 8:12 PM CT
With Friday's game being washed out by rain, John Smoltz will now come off the DL on Monday, not Sunday, as originally planned, according to the AP. The veteran gets a break in one sense because he no longer has to go up against Johan Santana, but the downside is he'll now have to make his start at Coors Field.
Tim Hudson, P, Atlanta BravesFriday 4/4, 8:10 PM CT
Tim Hudson will pitch Saturday now with Friday's rainout, according to the AP. He'll face John Maine and the Mets.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 4/4, 8:08 PM CT
John Maine will be bumped back a day with Friday's rainout, according to the AP. He has the exact same matchup - vs. Tim Hudson and the Braves - so use him just as you would have had he started Friday.
Mike Pelfrey, P, New York MetsFriday 4/4, 8:07 PM CT
With Friday's rainout, the Mets will skip Mike Pelfrey in the rotation, according to the AP. He was to start Saturday, but John Maine will now start Saturday and Johan Santana Sunday. Pelfrey will now figures to start against the Phillies next week.
Dioner Navarro, C, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 4/4, 7:51 PM CT
Dioner Navarro exited Friday's game in the top of the third inning after suffering a cut on his right hand, according to SportsTicker. Further details on Navarro's injury should come out shortly. Shawn Riggans replaced him and hit a three-run double in his first at-bat.
Brendan Harris, 2B, Minnesota TwinsFriday 4/4, 7:06 PM CT
Flu-like symptoms are keeping Brendan Harris out of the lineup Friday. Matt Tolbert started at second in his place. Consider Harris day-to-day for the time being.
Kevin Slowey, P, Minnesota TwinsFriday 4/4, 7:03 PM CT
Kevin Slowey will skip his next start because of a strained right biceps that forced him to leave Thursday’s game, according to the AP. “We’ve got time here,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “He’ll miss his next start and we’ve got time after that and we’ll see where he’s at.” Gardenhire said the Twins would wait to see how Slowey progresses over the next week before deciding whether a DL stint is necessary. The manager also said they would not rush Francisco Liriano back to take Slowey's place.
Micah Owings, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 4/4, 6:42 PM CT
Micah Owings got his 2008 season off on the right foot Friday, allowing just one run on two hits and two walks while striking out nine over 6 2/3 innings. Making the outing more impressive is the fact that it was at Coors Field. Owings had an impressive rookie campaign last year and could really break out this season.
Chris Duncan, LF, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 4/4, 6:00 PM CT
Chris Duncan isn't ready to play yet because of a strained hamstring, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The outfielder has one hit in just three at-bats so far this year. He probable wasn't going to play tonight, anyway, against the left-hander. He could be back on Sunday.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsFriday 4/4, 5:44 PM CT
Dmitri Young has been sent back to Washington for treatment and further examination on his ailing back, according to the AP. An MRI on Young's back revealed inflammation, but manager Manny Acta said it was too soon to consider placing Young on the DL. The manager expects the situation to be resolved by the time the team returns home from St. Louis Monday. Keep Young on your bench until further notice.
Jorge Posada, C, New York YankeesFriday 4/4, 5:27 PM CT
Jorge Posada is in the lineup tonight in the DH spot. He had missed the previous two games with a shoulder injury.
Bill Hall, 3B, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 4/4, 5:06 PM CT
Bill Hall had a career day Friday, belting a pair of homers while driving in six runs in a 13-4 spanking of the Giants. Hall will gain back third base eligibility in the majority of leagues shortly, which will increase his fantasy value.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 4/4, 4:33 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez will play tonight's game against the Marlins despite leaving last night's game with stiffness in his surgically repaired shoulder, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Sanchez is off to a great start, hitting .417 in 12 at-bats, so go ahead and stick him in your lineup.
Guillermo Quiroz, C, Baltimore OriolesFriday 4/4, 4:27 PM CT
Guillermo Quiroz looks to be in line to serve as Adam Loewen's personal catcher this season, according to the Baltimore Sun. Ramon Hernandez's backup will be behind the plate tomorrow if this turns out to be the case. Quiroz won't have any fantasy value this year, but this news is helpful for those in daily transaction leagues that want to know when to play Hernandez.
Brian Burres, P, Baltimore OriolesFriday 4/4, 4:21 PM CT
Orioles No. 5 starter Brian Burres was supposed to make his first start of the year on Sunday, but he's been pushed back to Tuesday, according to the Baltimore Sun. He will be available to pitch in relief tonight and maybe tomorrow. Jeremy Guthrie will start on Sunday and Daniel Cabrera will get the ball on Monday. Burres, who pitched an inning of relief in Monday's opener, isn't someone you need to be counting on in fantasy.
Jonny Gomes, RF, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 4/4, 4:16 PM CT
Jonny Gomes has had his suspension, which sprun from a bench-clearing brawl in spring training, reduced from two to one game, according to the NY Daily News. He will serve the suspension tonight. Gomes has received just one at-bat so far this year.
Shelley Duncan, 1B, New York YankeesFriday 4/4, 4:13 PM CT
Shelley Duncan has had his suspension, which sprung from a bench-clearing brawl in spring training, reduced from three games to two, according to the NY Daily News. Duncan will begin serving the suspension Sunday. He has yet to receive an at-bat in three games this year.
Melky Cabrera, CF, New York YankeesFriday 4/4, 4:10 PM CT
Melky Cabrera has had his suspension, which sprung from a bench-clearing brawl in spring training, reduced from three to two games, according to the NY Daily News. The outfielder will begin serving his suspension Friday night. Cabrera is off to a nice start this year, hitting .375 with a home run in three games.
Jose Valverde, P, Houston AstrosFriday 4/4, 4:02 PM CT
Jose Valverde picked up his first save of the season on Friday, although he also served up a solo homer. Luckily, the Astros were up by two runs when Jose entered in the ninth inning.
Kosuke Fukudome, RF, Chicago CubsFriday 4/4, 4:01 PM CT
Kosuke Fukudome keeps on producing. He went 2-for-4 with a run against the Astros on Friday. Fukudome is 6-for-12 with four walks and four runs through four games.
Miguel Tejada, SS, Houston AstrosFriday 4/4, 3:59 PM CT
Miguel Tejada went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, one run, and one RBI in a win over the Cubs on Friday. He is 5-for-19 on the season and three of his hits have gone for extra bases. Unfortunately, Miggy doesn't have a homer yet, but we're not too worried.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsFriday 4/4, 3:57 PM CT
Geovany Soto drove in another two runs on Friday. He is only hitting .167 on the young season, but he has notched in RBI in three straight games.
Chris Sampson, P, Houston AstrosFriday 4/4, 3:56 PM CT
Chris Sampson justified his spot in the rotation by holding the Cubs to six hits and two runs over 6.2 innings on Friday. Sampson earned a no-decision, but it was a solid outing by the right-hander. He didn't walk a batter and struck out one. Sampson has value in NL-only leagues and is worth keeping an eye on in deeper mixed leagues.
Felix Pie, CF, Chicago CubsFriday 4/4, 3:54 PM CT
Felix Pie started on Friday despite a bruised right hand/wrist. He went 0-for-4 against the Astros. Maybe he should have taken a day off, huh?
J.R. Towles, C, Houston AstrosFriday 4/4, 3:52 PM CT
J.R. Towles hit his first homer of the season on Friday, a two-run shot off of Cubs starter Rich Hill. It was Towles' only hit of the day. The rookie has driven in three runs over the past two games.
Jose Contreras, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 4/4, 3:49 PM CT
Jose Contreras doesn't appear to have changed much from 2007. He allowed 10 hits and five runs (four earned) over five innings against the Tigers on Friday. Contreras walked four, struck out two, and threw only 56 of his 92 pitches for strikes. He escaped with a no-decision, but fantasy owners will judge him more harshly.
Nate Robertson, P, Detroit TigersFriday 4/4, 3:45 PM CT
Nate Robertson did not start the year off well. The southpaw served up seven hits and five runs to the White Sox over five innings on Friday. He walked two, struck out five, and allowed six extra-base hits. Robertson was fortunate to escape with only five runs allowed, as he got out of a jam in the fifth.
Carlos Quentin, LF, Chicago White SoxFriday 4/4, 3:43 PM CT
Carlos Quentin collected his first homer and RBI of the season on Friday, thanks to a two-run shot off of Nate Robertson. Quentin did not play in the first two games and is 3-for-9 over the last two outings. He figures to be part of a platoon in the crowded White Sox outfield.
Ivan Rodriguez, C, Detroit TigersFriday 4/4, 3:40 PM CT
Ivan Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs, and two RBI in Friday's loss to the White Sox. He snapped back after a 1-for-12 series against the Royals.
Kelly Johnson, 2B, Atlanta BravesFriday 4/4, 3:38 PM CT
Kelly Johnson is not listed as a starter for Friday's game against the Mets, according to the New York Post. He has been out due to right knee soreness. Johnson could catch a break, though, as forecasts indicate the game may be rained out. Martin Prado is starting in his place.
A.J. Pierzynski, C, Chicago White SoxFriday 4/4, 3:35 PM CT
A.J. Pierzynski hit his second homer of the season on Friday. It was a three-run shot off of Jason Grilli. Pierzynski also added two doubles and finished the day with five RBI and two runs. It's an excellent start to the season, especially for a guy who had a down year in 2007.
Clete Thomas, CF, Detroit TigersFriday 4/4, 3:33 PM CT
Clete Thomas went 3-for-4 with one run, one RBI, and one stolen base in Friday's loss to the White Sox. It was his second straight start, and he will likely stick in the lineup until Gary Sheffield can return. Thomas is batting .556 on the young season.
Bobby Jenks, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 4/4, 3:31 PM CT
Bobby Jenks closed the door on the Tigers on Friday and earned his second save of the season. The bulky reliever did walk two batters in the ninth, but he escaped without allowing a hit or a run.
Burke Badenhop, P, Florida MarlinsFriday 4/4, 3:27 PM CT
The Marlins won't be shy about calling up pitcher Burke Badenhop, MLB.com reports. The 25-year-old right-hander picked up a Double-A win on Thursday night, and he posted a 1.88 ERA over 14.1 innings this spring. He came over in the offseason deal with the Tigers. Badenhop only worked three games at Double-A in 2007, but it's not like the Marlins have a bunch of starters locked into the rotation. This is a name to know in NL-only leagues, although he's not expected to be a high strikeout guy.
Cameron Maybin, OF, Florida MarlinsFriday 4/4, 3:21 PM CT
The Marlins are being patient with Cameron Maybin. Even if they have more outfield injuries, the club wants Maybin to stick in the minors and gather valuable at-bats, MLB.com reports. There isn't a known timetable for his ascension to the majors, which means the talented prospect mainly has fantasy value only in keeper leagues.
Conor Jackson, 1B, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 4/4, 3:05 PM CT
Conor Jackson remains out of the lineup, but he tells the Arizona Republic that he's feeling better. He is out due to an illness, possibly a viral infection or pneumonia. Jackson has no timetable for his return, and he's simply day-to-day. Chris Burke is starting at first in his place.
Matt Capps, P, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 4/4, 2:55 PM CT
Matt Capps signed a two-year contract with the Pirates on Friday, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. The deal buys out the closer's first year of arbitration. We're surprised they didn't hammer out a longer contract, but, hey, it's a start.
Alex Rios, RF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 4/4, 2:41 PM CT
The Blue Jays have signed Alex Rios to a six-year, $64 million contract extension that begins with the 2009 season, MLB.com reports. The deal ends a negotiations process than began back in October. Rios, Aaron Hill, and Vernon Wells are now all locked into deals that could keep them in Toronto through 2014.
Aaron Hill, 2B, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 4/4, 2:38 PM CT
The Blue Jays have signed Aaron Hill to a four-year deal with $12 million, MLB.com reports. He new contract includes club options for 2012, 2013 and 2014. He joins Vernon Wells and Alex Rios as part of the long-term core of hitters.
Kazuo Matsui, 2B, Houston AstrosFriday 4/4, 1:56 PM CT
Kazuo Matsui will be checked out on Monday and could begin a rehab assignment at Double-A as soon as Tuesday, MLB.com reports. He is aiming to return on April 15. Matsui had surgery to repair an anal fissure this spring.
Rickie Weeks, 2B, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 4/4, 1:47 PM CT
Rickie Weeks scored in the first inning on Friday. It's the 17th straight game with a run, which is a new franchise record. Fantasy owners are simply happy that Weeks has played in 17 consecutive games without suffering an injury.
Ray Durham, 2B, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 4/4, 1:44 PM CT
Ray Durham is back on the bench on Friday, due in part to a bruised left shoulder. The Giants also want to give more time to Eugenio Velez. "A little bit of both, but more my decision [to play Velez]," manager Bruce Bochy admits to MLB.com. "I figured Durham still would be a little sore, but, honestly, I haven't talked with him. Velez is 100 percent [healthy] and he's playing well."
Aaron Rowand, CF, San Francisco GiantsFriday 4/4, 1:42 PM CT
Aaron Rowand bruised his ribs on Thursday, but the ailment didn't keep him out of Friday's lineup. Manager Bruce Bochy made the game-time decision to use Rowand over Fred Lewis, MLB.com reports.
Vinnie Chulk, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 4/4, 1:40 PM CT
Vinnie Chulk will work an inning for Triple-A Fresno on Friday night, MLB.com reports. He is dealing with right shoulder tendinitis, and this news suggests he could return fairly soon.
Omar Vizquel, SS, San Francisco GiantsFriday 4/4, 1:38 PM CT
Omar Vizquel is unlikely to return to the lineup in time for the Giants home opener on Monday, MLB.com reports. The veteran shortstop has been rehabbing following left knee surgery, but recent soreness has caused him to "back off a little bit." Brian Bocock has been starting in Vizquel's place.
Mike Zagurski, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 4/4, 1:34 PM CT
Mike Zagurski underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Thursday, the Phillies announced on Friday. Dr. James Andrews performed the ligament replacement procedure on Zagurski's left elbow, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The reliever's season is over.
Angel Chavez, SS, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 4/4, 1:25 PM CT
The Dodgers designated Angel Chavez for assignment on Friday. The move will make room for Chan Ho Park.
Mike Hampton, P, Atlanta BravesFriday 4/4, 1:22 PM CT
The Braves placed Mike Hampton on the 15-day disabled list on Friday and called up Jo-Jo Reyes from Triple-A Richmond. Hampton was scratched from his Thursday start due to a strained left pectoral muscle. Reyes is a temporary fill-in until Chuck James is called upon to fill Hampton's rotation spot.
Francisco Liriano, P, Minnesota TwinsFriday 4/4, 12:30 PM CT
Francisco Liriano is not an option to step into the rotation and replace the injured Kevin Slowey next week. The southpaw will work one more start for Single-A Fort Myers and could then work at Triple-A Rochester, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. The Twins have not named a replacement starter for Slowey, but our guess is that Brian Bass and Glen Perkins are options.
Carlos Quentin, LF, Chicago White SoxFriday 4/4, 12:14 PM CT
Carlos Quentin will start in left field again on Friday, with Nick Swisher in center, the Chicago Tribune notes. The lineup means Alexei Ramirez is on the bench.
Adam Lind, LF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 4/4, 12:06 PM CT
Adam Lind hit his first home run of the season at Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday. He seemed to fall out of favor as the organization’s left fielder of the future last season, but his bat could still get him to the majors as a regular.
Justin Masterson, P, Boston Red SoxFriday 4/4, 12:04 PM CT
Justin Masterson threw four scoreless innings for Double-A Portland on Thursday, allowing three hits. Masterson is one of Boston’s top pitching prospects, though he is probably behind Bartolo Colon on the organizational starting pitcher depth chart this season.
Rick Porcello, P, Detroit TigersFriday 4/4, 12:02 PM CT
Rick Porcello, Detroit’s top pick in the 2007 draft out of high school, threw five scoreless innings at High-A Thursday, allowing only one hit. He has received plenty of hype since the draft and could be on the fast track to the majors for the Tigers if he keeps this up a la Jeremy Bonderman.
Hayden Penn, P, Baltimore OriolesFriday 4/4, 11:57 AM CT
Hayden Penn's 2008 minor league season got off to a bad start Thursday, as he allowed six earned runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings. Penn remains a candidate to get some starts with the Orioles this season, but starts like this one will not help his cause.
Tony Gwynn, CF, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 4/4, 11:56 AM CT
Tony Gwynn will not play on Friday and will not be available on Saturday, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel notes. He injured his left hamstring on Thursday, and the team is unsure of a return date. Gabe Kapler will start in his place.
Prince Fielder, 1B, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 4/4, 11:44 AM CT
The Brewers continue to have "ongoing discussions" with Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun about contract extensions, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports. Owner Mark Attanasio says the club has also extended multi-year offers to some other young players, although he didn't disclose any names.
Gabe Kapler, CF, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 4/4, 10:46 AM CT
Gabe Kapler will start in center on Friday, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports. He is getting the call because the Brewers are facing a left-hander and because Tony Gwynn injured his hamstring on Thursday.
Brandon Inge, 3B, Detroit TigersFriday 4/4, 10:43 AM CT
Brandon Inge will start at third base again on Friday, as Miguel Cabrera has shifted to DH, the Detroit News reports. We assume this means Clete Thomas will get another start in center.
Miguel Cabrera, 1B, Detroit TigersFriday 4/4, 10:39 AM CT
Miguel Cabrera will start at DH on Friday in place of Gary Sheffield, the Detroit News notes. Cabrera was questionable due to a sore left quad.
Gary Sheffield, DH, Detroit TigersFriday 4/4, 10:38 AM CT
Gary Sheffield will not play on Friday, but he is not going on the DL yet. Sheffield injured his left ring finger on Thursday. "He does have a torn tendon," manager Jim Leyland tells the Detroit News. "But not in an area where the trainers think it will affect his grip on the bat. When the swelling goes down, he should be able to play."
Scott Olsen, P, Florida MarlinsFriday 4/4, 9:42 AM CT
Scott Olsen is ready to make his season debut on Friday. He missed most of spring training due to shoulder tendinitis and is dealing with bone spurs in his elbow. "Bone spurs have never bothered me, and I still got it," Olsen tells the Miami Herald. "They say you can throw with it. The team gave me an option in 2005 if I wanted to have surgery or not. I asked them if I could throw with [bone spurs], and they said many guys have them and throw with them. I feel fine with my shoulder and elbow." Fantasy owners should avoid Olsen until he proves he's healthy and ready to work with some consistency.
Scott Kazmir, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 4/4, 9:35 AM CT
Scott Kazmir will up his pitch count to 65 when he works his next bullpen session on Saturday, the Tampa Tribune notes. The ace is out with a strained left elbow. His timetable remains unknown, but he could possibly return in late April or early May.
Jason Hammel, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 4/4, 9:32 AM CT
Jason Hammel will make his first start of the season on Monday, April 7. The Rays had to shift their plans a little following Thursday's rainout, the Tampa Tribune notes. Andy Sonnanstine will pitch on Friday, following by Edwin Jackson, James Shields, Hammel, and Matt Garza.
Mark Prior, P, San Diego PadresFriday 4/4, 9:16 AM CT
Mark Prior cut his throwing session short on Thursday due to tightness in his right shoulder. "This isn't a setback," pitching coach Darren Balsley tells the San Diego Union-Tribune. Prior will throw again in three days.
Brian Giles, RF, San Diego PadresFriday 4/4, 9:13 AM CT
Brian Giles received a day off on Thursday to rest his surgically repaired right knee. He had microfracture surgery over the winter. Giles tells the San Diego Union-Tribune that the joint "feels great," and he adds, "We're not really out of the woods on that until June, when the tissue is supposed to be fully settled on the bone."
Darin Erstad, CF, Houston AstrosFriday 4/4, 9:10 AM CT
Darin Erstad will get a start this weekend in place of either Carlos Lee or Hunter Pence. "I am going to have to force (Lee) sometimes to take a day off, and Hunter is the same way," manager Cecil Cooper tells the Houston Chronicle. "We just have to do it. These guys have to get at-bats. You can't depend on them if you don't play them." Fantasy owners shouldn't panic if Lee or Pence isn't in the lineup on one of these upcoming days.
Jose Cruz Jr., CF, Houston AstrosFriday 4/4, 9:08 AM CT
Jose Cruz Jr. went 1-for-3 with a run on Thursday, as he started in place of a resting Michael Bourn. "I talked to Bourn (Wednesday), and I told him it didn't matter if he went 4-for-4, we're going to get Cruz in there and get him some at-bats," manager Cecil Cooper tells the Houston Chronicle. Fantasy owners need not be worried about Bourn's health or status as a starter.
