He still has a long way to go before the Reds consider him a definitive starting outfielder of the future, however.

Despite taking the loss, he allowed only one run on four hits in five innings and fanned six. Mulvey profiles as a middle to back of the rotation starter, and his strong start means that he is picking up right where he left off last season with a 3.32 ERA in 26 starts at Double-A. He could see some starts with the Twins at some point this season.

If Scherzer’s performance continues, he could force the Diamondbacks to call him up.
