With his right knee still healing from offseason arthroscopic surgery, Kings forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim will take at least three weeks off to rest, the AP reported. Abdur-Rahim was a strong candidate to start at power forward this season.
Drew Gooden, F, Chicago BullsTuesday 10/9, 10:53 AM CT
With the holdout of Anderson Varejao ongoing and center Zydrunas Ilgauskas getting up there in age, Cavs forward Drew Gooden is preparing to play more than 30 minutes per game since his first season with Cleveland in 2004-05. "I'll have to condition myself so I can be prepared to do it night in and night out," Gooden told the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. "The minutes I've played before seemed like I was playing only half a season. But I'm in condition and I want more minutes if Andy's here or not here."
Joe Smith, F, Oklahoma City ThunderTuesday 10/9, 10:47 AM CT
Bulls coach Scott Skiles said Joe Smith is in on the competition for Chicago’s lone remaining starting spot at power forward. “He’s going to be a factor,” Skiles told the Chicago Sun-Times. “He can start at the four, come off the bench, and he’s content to do either.” Smith is competing with Andres Nocioni and rookie Joakim Noah, although Tyrus Thomas could also work into the mix.
Ryan Gomes, F, Minnesota TimberwolvesTuesday 10/9, 10:37 AM CT
Timberwolves newcomer Ryan Gomes has pleased coach Randy Wittman thus far this preseason, likely earning himself major minutes when the regular season begins. “He just does all the little things,” Wittman told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “He’s just a solid player. He’s not going to do anything spectacular.” Wittman said he wants Gomes to be comfortable playing both forward positions this season, another sign he wants to keep him on the floor whenever possible.
Gilbert Arenas, G, Washington WizardsTuesday 10/9, 9:49 AM CT
Gilbert Arenas wants to make sure his surgically repaired left knee is completely healthy for the regular season, so may only play in alternate preseason games. Arenas sat out Saturday’s scrimmage to rest his knee and told the Washington Post he won’t decide his status for Tuesday’s game with Cleveland until right before tip-off.
Sean Williams, F, New Jersey NetsTuesday 10/9, 9:41 AM CT
Nets rookie forward Sean Williams has been impressive thus far in his first training camp and could be earning himself a valuable role off the bench. "I think Sean has had some good moments, which is very, very encouraging," coach Lawrence Frank told the New York Daily News. "Like any young player there are going to be a lot of days when you don't see that. But he's had some good moments and we've just got to build on it. He's done some eye-opening things."
Eddy Curry, C, New York KnicksTuesday 10/9, 9:36 AM CT
Eddy Curry’s right shoulder will be reexamined in New York on Tuesday following Sunday’s MRI which revealed a labral tear. The New York Daily News reported that the team is cautiously optimistic that with daily treatment Curry will only miss 1-2 weeks. Curry did not separate the shoulder and he was told he did no damage to his rotator cuff. He was told that surgery is unlikely, but the team won’t know for sure until later Tuesday.
Juwan Howard, F, Denver NuggetsTuesday 10/9, 9:27 AM CT
Timberwolves forward Juwan Howard has not demanded a trade, but told Minnesota he prefers to play for a potential winner. The Boston Globe reported that the Celtics are one of the five teams he is comfortable being dealt to, but his $6.8 million salary makes that unlikely.
Scot Pollard, C, Boston CelticsTuesday 10/9, 9:23 AM CT
An MRI on Celtics center Scot Pollard’s left ankle revealed a bone bruise and soft tissue inflammation, the Boston Globe reported. Pollard will receive treatment and be re-evaluated on Friday.
