Knicks center Jerome James could need season-ending surgery on his right knee. James to the New York Post that the “hardware” in his knee from a 1999 reconstructive surgery is being rejected by his body, which is causing swelling and fluid to build up. James said he believes he can get back healthy enough to play a limited role and postpone surgery until this summer, but wouldn’t say what he would do if the pain and swelling does not subside.

Nets guard Jason Kidd hasn’t practiced since Sunday with an injured back and is going to sit out the next two preseason games, the New York Daily News reported. With Kidd also facing off-the-court issues stemming from a nightclub incident, it appears that Darrell Armstrong could be headed for a larger role than originally expected. However, coach Lawrence Frank said it was premature to assume that Kidd’s health would be an issue when the season begins.

Hawks guard Speedy Claxton has missed the Hawks’ last two preseason games and won’t play again on Thursday because of soreness in his right knee. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Claxton has been in Vancouver, British Columbia where he was getting a consultation on his knee, which isn’t the same one he had surgery on in June which cost him 40 games last season. “The MRI came back clean, so I don’t know what the severity of his injury might be,” coach Mike Woodson told the paper. “But we have to move on. We can’t wait.”

Nelson told the San Francisco he first approached Harrington with the idea on Monday, and Harrington said that he will embrace whatever role Nelson gives him. If Harrington does come off the bench, Matt Barnes, Mickael Pietrus and Austin Croshere are all candidates to start at power forward.

Warriors coach Don Nelson planned on using Monta Ellis strictly as a point guard this season, but with Ellis missing much of the preseason due to a strained neck and Troy Hudson playing well behind Baron Davis, he is leaning towards last year’s philosophy of using Ellis as a combo guard and pairing him with Baron Davis. “Without (Ellis) playing, all I can do is remember what happened last year, and I like him on the floor,” Nelson told the San Francisco Chronicle. “We have to find a way to work him in. He’s a good young player and has made the step from his rookie year. … I think to get the best performance out of Monta, I’m going to play him with Baron as much as I can.”

Memphis center Pau Gasol sprained his left ankle in Wednesday’s preseason game against the Pacers, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported. Gasol came down on Danny Granger’s foot in the first quarter, and after a couple of trips down the floor came out of the game for good with what was called a mild ankle sprain. He will undergo tests on Thursday to determine the extent of the injury. “It doesn’t seem like it’s pretty bad,” Gasol told the paper. “It’s just swollen right now.”
