Tim Rattay, QB, Tuesday 10/9, 4:10 PM CT
The Cardinals signed Tim Rattay to a one-year contract on Tuesday. With Matt Leinart being placed on IR, Rattay will serve as Kurt Warner's backup.
Matt Leinart, QB, Arizona CardinalsTuesday 10/9, 4:08 PM CT
The Cardinals placed Matt Leinart on IR Tuesday, officially ending his season, according to the Arizona Republic. The quarterback suffered a fractured collarbone in Sunday's victory over the Rams. This means Kurt Warner will officially step in as the starter, and the team signed Tim Rattay to a one-year contract to serve as his backup. Assuming the Cardinals offensive line can keep Warner from getting too beat up, he should be a solid fantasy starter the rest of the way.
Rudi Johnson, RB, Detroit LionsTuesday 10/9, 3:44 PM CT
The Bengals returned to practice following their bye week but Rudi Johnson did not join them, instead watching from the sidelines while nursing a hamstring injury. Johnson had no comment for the media following his non-practice, and head coach Marvin Lewis would only offer a "We'll see" when asked about the availability of his injured starters for week six, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Johnson sat out the Bengals' week four loss to the Patriots, ending a streak of 64 consecutive games played. Kenny Watson filled in for him and would do the same should Rudi be unable to answer the call in week six.
Todd Heap, TE, Baltimore RavensTuesday 10/9, 3:43 PM CT
Head coach Brian Billick was optimistic that tight end Todd Heap would return to the lineup for the Ravens' week six game against the Rams. "I'm pleased that we didn't have to [play Heap in week five]," Billick told the Baltimore Sun. "I'm pleased that we got out of there with a win without having to press Todd into duty because that doubled the chances of him being healthier and ready to go this weekend." Quinn Sypniewski filled in for Heap, but as Billick noted defenses are "not going to look at Quinn Sypniewski the way they look at Todd Heap." Heap missed last week's game with a hamstring injury.
Jamal Lewis, RB, Cleveland BrownsTuesday 10/9, 3:43 PM CT
The status of running back Jamal Lewis for the Browns' Week 6 game is uncertain. "He has a strained foot and X-rays were negative," head coach Romeo Crennel told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "We'll see as the week goes on what his availability will be." Jason Wright would start against the Dolphins should Lewis be unavailable, with Jerome Harrison serving as the backup.
Charles Spencer, T, Jacksonville JaguarsTuesday 10/9, 3:42 PM CT
The Texans don't expect left tackle Charles Spencer, currently on the PUP list while recuperating from the knee injury he suffered last season, to return to action this year. "At this point right now, I would say it doesn't look good," head coach Gary Kubiak told the Houston Chronicle. "But Charles' future as far as playing football again does look good. Will it be this year? As of right now, that doesn't look like that's going to take place." The Texans' line has actually performed quite well sans Spencer, and if he were to return for 2008 and play at a level similar to what he flashed during his abbreviated rookie season it would certainly bode well for Houston's offense.
Olindo Mare, K, Seattle SeahawksTuesday 10/9, 11:26 AM CT
Olindo Mare’s job doesn’t appear to be safe. After seeing him miss two field goals last Sunday, the Saints are bringing in three kickers to challenge him, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Reports are that Mike Vanderjagt, Martin Gramatica, and Billy Cundiff are the three coming into the Crescent City to challenge Mare. Even if one of them wins the job, their fantasy value will be low unless the Saints offense turns things around.
Gus Frerotte, QB, Minnesota VikingsTuesday 10/9, 11:11 AM CT
For the second straight weekend, Gus Frerotte will be the starting quarterback of the Rams, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Marc Bulger was benched last week after trying to battle through broken ribs. Bulger wasn’t going to have much success against the Ravens with his injury, so this move makes a lot of sense, especially since Gus had a solid game versus the Cardinals last Sunday.
Alex Smith, QB, San Francisco 49ersTuesday 10/9, 10:55 AM CT
49ers quarterback Alex Smith was able to throw from 25 yards on Monday and hopes to be under center after the team’s Week 6 bye. "I pushed it back a little bit," he told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I was throwing about 25 yards. I wasn't gunning them in there. It definitely felt better than yesterday."
Tarvaris Jackson, QB, Minnesota VikingsTuesday 10/9, 10:54 AM CT
Tarvaris Jackson believes he’ll be healthy enough to start on Sunday against the Bears. “I’m pretty confident,” Jackson told the St. Paul Pioneer Press following practice on Monday. “The way I felt today and it’s only getting better. Today, I worked it pretty hard.” He has missed the last two games with a groin injury.
Kevin Jones, RB, Chicago BearsTuesday 10/9, 10:48 AM CT
Kevin Jones may have played his way back into the starting lineup, according to the Detroit News. He gained 48 yards on 11 carries during Sunday’s loss to the Redskins.
Vinny Testaverde, QB, Tuesday 10/9, 10:43 AM CT
With Matt Leinart sidelined because of a broken collarbone, the Cardinals are looking to add a veteran quarterback to provide depth behind Kurt Warner. The Arizona Republic reports the team will bring in Vinny Testaverde and Tim Rattay for tryouts. The Cardinals do need a veteran backup to Kurt Warner, who isn’t exactly the paragon of health. However, to put things in perspective, Testaverde was born nine days before John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
Brandon Jackson, RB, Green Bay PackersTuesday 10/9, 10:32 AM CT
Brandon Jackson might return to practice on Wednesday, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. He has missed the last two games with a shin injury.
Nathan Vasher, CB, Chicago BearsTuesday 10/9, 10:25 AM CT
Nathan Vasher is not expected to play in Sunday’s game against the Vikings, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. He is still nursing a pulled groin muscle and there is speculation that he may not return until after the team’s bye in Week 9.
Darwin Walker, DT, Carolina PanthersTuesday 10/9, 10:21 AM CT
Bears head coach Lovie Smith on Monday declined to comment on the knee injury that Darwin Walker suffered during Sunday’s win over the Packers, according to the Chicago Tribune. He suffered the injury during the first quarter and did not return.
Bernard Berrian, WR, Minnesota VikingsTuesday 10/9, 10:17 AM CT
Bernard Berrian is being evaluated for a toe injury, according to the Chicago Tribune. The injury is not considered serious.
D.J. Hackett, WR, Carolina PanthersTuesday 10/9, 10:14 AM CT
The Seahawks are hopeful wideout D.J. Hackett will be back on the field for the team’s Week 7 game against the Rams, according to the Seattle Times. He hasn’t played since suffering a high ankle sprain in the season opener. If D.J. has any setbacks, don’t be surprised if the team decides to hold him out of Week 7 to give the ankle two more weeks to heal since they have a bye the following Sunday.
Jake Delhomme, QB, Carolina PanthersTuesday 10/9, 9:52 AM CT
Although baseball pitchers generally miss between 12 and 18 months after undergoing "Tommy John surgery," Jake Delhomme believes he'll be ready for training camp. "By shutting Jake down today, that ensures that he can take his time in rehabilitation and will have no problem coming back in time for training camp next year," agent Rick Smith told Tuesday's Charlotte Observer. Delhomme is scheduled to undergo elbow surgery next week. We're not sure why Delhomme and the Panthers are so confident that he'll return in time for training camp when surgeons generally estimate the recovery time being between one and two years. We should know more once Jake undergoes surgery next week.
Simeon Rice, DE, Tuesday 10/9, 9:47 AM CT
Simeon Rice was inactive in Week 5, and head coach Mike Shanahan tells the Denver Post that Rice's surgically repaired left shoulder is still not 100 percent. Rice does not have a sack this season.
Roderick Coleman, DT, Tuesday 10/9, 9:41 AM CT
Roderick Coleman will play in Monday’s game against the Giants, head coach Bobby Petrino told Tuesday’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He has yet to play this season due to a knee injury.
Vincent Jackson, WR, San Diego ChargersTuesday 10/9, 9:40 AM CT
Vincent Jackson came out of the Week 5 win with an injured shoulder, but he is expected to play in Week 6, the North County Times reports.
Derrick Burgess, DE, Oakland RaidersTuesday 10/9, 9:22 AM CT
Derrick Burgess is expected to return to action in Week 6. "I would anticipate Derrick will be starting this (Sunday)," head coach Lane Kiffin tells the Oakland Tribune. Burgess missed Weeks 3 and 4 due to an injured right calf.
Daunte Culpepper, QB, Detroit LionsTuesday 10/9, 9:09 AM CT
The Raiders have named Daunte Culpepper their starting quarterback for the Week 6 game in San Diego. He has the job because Josh McCown is dealing with various injuries, namely a hairline fracture in the big toe of his left foot. "When Josh becomes healthy, we'll have a decision to make or it could stay the same," head coach Lane Kiffin tells the Sacramento Bee.
Santana Moss, WR, Washington RedskinsTuesday 10/9, 8:59 AM CT
Santana Moss continues to see improvement in his sore groin, and he will try to practice on Tuesday. Moss suffered the injury in Week 3 and did not play in Week 5. "Every day I'm going to progress. I know I'm going to practice, but you never know how the load is going to be," he tells the Washington Post. "I know I'm not going to go out there and go crazy."
Antwaan Randle El, WR, Washington RedskinsTuesday 10/9, 8:56 AM CT
Antwaan Randle El has no doubts about his availability for Week 6. "I will be playing Sunday," he tells the Washington Post. Randle El injured his hamstring in the first half of last week's game against the Lions and did not return.
Todd Herremans, T, Philadelphia EaglesTuesday 10/9, 8:49 AM CT
Todd Herremans did not practice on Monday. He underwent left knee surgery during the team's bye week. "I watched," Herremans tells the Philadelphia Inquirer. "It's a little sore."
Brandon Jacobs, RB, New York GiantsTuesday 10/9, 8:41 AM CT
Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is pleased with how the combined backfield of Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward fared in Week 5. “As I have said many times, the more good football players you can have, the better off you are going to be,” Coughlin tells the team's official web site. “I thought yesterday Derrick Ward’s first half was very good and the experience he had with the ankle that kind of set him back and hobbled him up a little bit. I thought that Brandon’s second half was strong. So the combination worked very well." The Giants running backs rushed for 171 yards and two touchdowns against the Jets.
Thomas Jones, RB, New York JetsTuesday 10/9, 7:54 AM CT
Thomas Jones spoke out on Monday about his lack of playing time during the Jets’ Week 5 loss. “Most feature backs in this league, they get the ball 20 or 25 times a game,” Jones told Newsday. “Just by getting the ball that many times, you get a feel for what the defense is doing and you can get a feel for how the offensive line is blocking. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to do that the last couple of weeks.”
Cleo Lemon, QB, Jacksonville JaguarsTuesday 10/9, 7:38 AM CT
Cleo Lemon has been named the indefinite starter in place of Trent Green, who the Dolphins believe suffered a Grade 3 concussion on Sunday, according to the Miami Herald. Lemon stepped in and completed 15-of-27 passes for 151 yards and a pick in Week 5 after Green went down.
