Rudi Johnson, RB, Detroit LionsThursday 10/11, 5:35 PM CT
Rudi Johnson missed a second consecutive day of practice, sitting out Thursday's session due to the hamstring injury he suffered in week three. The Bengals official web site indicated that it appears as if Kenny Watson will make his second straight start in place of Johnson. Johnson missed the Bengals' loss to New England in week four, but it was assumed the bye week would give him enough time to recover. Now, Rudi owners need to have Watson on stand-by.
David Carr, QB, New York GiantsThursday 10/11, 3:35 PM CT
Panthers quarterback David Carr missed his second straight practice Thursday because of a sore back, according to the Associated Press. Coach John Fox was unsure if Carr could practice on Friday. "I was hopeful he would today, but he did not,'' he said. "We'll see what happens." Fox didn’t say if it would be undrafted rookie Matt Moore and the geriatric Vinny Testaverde under center Sunday if Carr can’t go, but fantasy owners want nothing to do with either of them. Sadly, losing Carr would be a big blow to the value of Steve Smith.
Joe Jurevicius, WR, Cleveland BrownsThursday 10/11, 2:17 PM CT
Joe Jurevicius was limited in Wednesday's practice by a swollen knee suffered at New England, but head coach Romeo Crennel indicated Jurevicius will attempt to play. "Joe's wants to play," Crennel told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "That's one of the reasons he came back to Cleveland to be a Brown, so he can play in front of the fans. We'll know that prognosis later in the week as well." Tim Carter stepped in for Jurevicius and scored last week; he would be in line for more playing time again this week if Joe can't go.
Tab Perry, WR, Miami DolphinsThursday 10/11, 2:16 PM CT
Tab Perry, who hasn't played since suffering a hamstring injury in week two, has been ruled out of Sunday's game with the Chiefs with a hip injury. Perry missed 14 games last season with a hip injury, though the Cincinnati Enquirer said it is not known if the injuries are related. Perry was a candidate to fill Chris Henry's role as the Bengals' third receiver, but he's been too banged up to do much of anything. Meanwhile, Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh have more than picked up the slack and Henry's return could be just around the corner.
Derrick Mason, WR, Baltimore RavensThursday 10/11, 2:16 PM CT
Derrick Mason did not practice Wednesday because he was battling a case of gastroenteritis. "He's got, as Tess [trainer Bill Tessendorf] says, gastroenteritis," Ravens coach Brian Billick told the Baltimore Sun. "In my neighborhood, that's [diarrhea]. So you put whatever label you want to." Evidently the NFL player with more catches than anyone else was dropping something on Wednesday, and while his 8.1 yards per carry isn't all that explosive… okay, we'll stop there. We fully expect Mason to trot out to his regular position this Sunday against the Rams.
Todd Heap, TE, Baltimore RavensThursday 10/11, 11:18 AM CT
Todd Heap returned to practice Wednesday on a limited basis after missing last week’s game with a strained hamstring. “I talked to a lot of guys on our team that have had [strained hamstrings], and you’ve got to be careful,” Heap told the Baltimore Sun. “You’ve got to be smart about it, but it’s been improving every day, which is a good sign. I’m excited for this week.”
David Carr, QB, New York GiantsThursday 10/11, 10:52 AM CT
Panthers quarterback David Carr didn’t practice Wednesday and may not throw again on Thursday because of his injured back, according the Charlotte Observer. He is expected to give it a go this Sunday against the Cardinals, but his back problems make him a very risky start for fantasy owners.
Ahman Green, RB, Houston TexansThursday 10/11, 10:35 AM CT
Running back Ahman Green , who has missed the past two games after bruising his knee in week one, will return to action this week. “It’s going to mean a lot, because I’ll be able to go out there and help my team [with] whatever I’m doing—running the ball, catching the ball, picking up the blitz, just being out there on the field,” Green told the Houston Chronicle. “It will give our offense a little bit more respect and keep that defense very honest.”
Alex Smith, QB, San Francisco 49ersThursday 10/11, 10:18 AM CT
49ers quarterback Alex Smith threw the ball around during Wednesday's practice and head coach Mike Nolan continues to be cautiously optimistic that he’ll be able to return after the team’s bye this week. "I would say he's questionable," Nolan told the Sacramento Bee. "Because 'hopeful' is not one of the choices." Smith isn’t a fantasy option unless you’re in a ridiculously large league, but his return may help open things up a bit for Frank Gore and allow Darrell Jackson to remember how a football feels.
Andre Johnson, WR, Houston TexansThursday 10/11, 10:17 AM CT
Andre Johnson did not practice on Wednesday, and though he did run on the practice field for the first time since spraining his PCL in week two he is not expected to play this Sunday against the Jaguars. "That's the first time I've run gassers on the field," Johnson told the Houston Chronicle. "I didn't change direction much." Johnson added that he hopes to return in time for the Texans' week seven game against the Titans.
Chad Pennington, QB, Miami DolphinsThursday 10/11, 10:06 AM CT
Chad Pennington will try a unique strategy in dealing with his current slump. Instead of pressing to improve his poor performance, he will instead let the game come to him. "You hear the saying, 'More is better,'" Pennington told Newsday. "Well, sometimes less is better." Speculation continues to mount in New York that backup Kellen Clemens could and/or should take over for an ineffective Pennington, but Chad will get at least one more start this week against the Eagles to retain his job.
Tarvaris Jackson, QB, Minnesota VikingsThursday 10/11, 10:01 AM CT
Tarvaris Jackson was limited during practice on Wednesday, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. He has missed the last two games with a groin injury.
Derrick Burgess, DE, Oakland RaidersThursday 10/11, 10:00 AM CT
Derrick Burgess appeared to be on the path to playing this Sunday, until the team practiced on Wednesday. Burgess left the session early due to further issues with his calf. "At one point we thought he was feeling better, and then he'd have a setback because he's pushing himself further," head coach Lane Kiffin tells the Sacramento Bee. Burgess is considered doubtful for Week 6.
LaMont Jordan, RB, New England PatriotsThursday 10/11, 9:55 AM CT
LaMont Jordan left practice on Wednesday due to lingering issues with his back. Head coach Lane Kiffin tells the San Francisco Chronicle that Jordan's status is "up and down." He injured his back in Week 4.
Vincent Jackson, WR, San Diego ChargersThursday 10/11, 9:49 AM CT
Vincent Jackson did not practice on Wednesday due to a sore shoulder. He is expected to play in Week 6, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Greg Jennings, WR, Green Bay PackersThursday 10/11, 9:46 AM CT
Greg Jennings added a new injury to his list of ailments on Wednesday. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that he was limited to the walk-through portion of practice because of a shoulder injury. He’s also missed time with a hamstring injury this season.
Boomer Grigsby, RB, Thursday 10/11, 9:45 AM CT
The Chiefs plan to employ fullback Boomer Grigsby on offense this week. He has been either inactive or only used on special teams thus far. Grigsby made the switch from linebacker to fullback prior to this season. “We’ve got to get him in there in certain situations," head coach Herm Edwards tells the Kansas City Star. "He’s going to start playing. It’s going to happen.”
Trent Green, QB, St. Louis RamsThursday 10/11, 9:43 AM CT
Trent Green was so encouraged after undergoing neurological testing in Missouri on Wednesday that he called head coach Cam Cameron and stated his desire to return to the playing field as soon as possible. "He's really upbeat," Cameron told the Miami Herald. "You could imagine, that's what makes those guys who they are and what they are. They're competitors, and they think a little differently than the rest of us sometimes. They can't imagine not playing." Green will continue to be tested and monitored by the same neurological experts who oversaw his comeback from a severe concussion a year ago, when he missed eight games with a similar injury. Cleo Lemon has been named the indefinite starter for the Dolphins in Green's stead.
Brandon Jackson, RB, Green Bay PackersThursday 10/11, 9:43 AM CT
Brandon Jackson returned to practice on Wednesday after missing the last two games with a shin injury. He told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that he has been cleared to play on Sunday against the Redskins.
Tommie Harris, DT, Chicago BearsThursday 10/11, 9:40 AM CT
Tommie Harris did not practice on Wednesday. He is nursing a left knee injury. However, the Chicago Sun-Times reports that Harris is expected to start on Sunday against the Vikings.
Nathan Vasher, CB, Chicago BearsThursday 10/11, 9:37 AM CT
Nathan Vasher missed practice on Wednesday due to the groin injury that has sidelined him for the last two games. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that he is not expected to play on Sunday against the Vikings.
Travis Henry, RB, Thursday 10/11, 9:37 AM CT
Travis Henry participated in practice on Wednesday. He was away from the team on Monday and Tuesday to meet with his lawyers in New York. His case is expected to take up to five weeks, the Denver Post reports. The Broncos will not practice again until next week, as they are on bye.
J.P. Losman, QB, Buffalo BillsThursday 10/11, 9:33 AM CT
J.P. Losman practiced for the first time since spraining his knee in a Week 3 loss to the Patriots and declared himself ready to play when the Bills return from their bye a week from Sunday. "I have to prepare myself like I'm starting," Losman told the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. "I do feel that way, and we'll see how it goes." Head coach Dick Jauron has refused to say whether rookie Trent Edwards - who hasn't looked out of place in two starts - or Losman will get the nod in Week 7.
Bernard Berrian, WR, Minnesota VikingsThursday 10/11, 9:31 AM CT
Bernard Berrian missed practice on Wednesday with a toe injury. The Chicago Tribune reports that he is expected to play on Sunday against the Vikings.
Antwaan Randle El, WR, Washington RedskinsThursday 10/11, 9:27 AM CT
Antwaan Randle El did not practice on Wednesday due to a sore hamstring. "Hopefully there's a miracle there and some way he can get healed up," head coach Joe Gibbs tells the team's official web site. Randle El took a different stance, saying, "I expect to play, but like they say, I'm questionable at this point." James Thrash would likely start if Randle El were out.
William Thomas, T, Philadelphia EaglesThursday 10/11, 9:25 AM CT
Eagles left tackle William Thomas and left guard Todd Herremans missed practice on Wednesday. Both are dealing with knee injuries. Thomas, who didn't play in Week 4, is questionable for Week 6. "I'm very disappointed," Thomas tells the Philadelphia Inquirer. "We'll see how it goes. Everything is day-to-day right now. It's just not feeling right, and I can't push it." Herremans underwent surgery during the Week 5 bye and is expected to play.
Santana Moss, WR, Washington RedskinsThursday 10/11, 9:21 AM CT
Santana Moss practiced fully on Wednesday and expects to play on Sunday against the Packers, the Washington Post reports. Moss injured his groin in Week 3 and sat out in Week 5.
Brian Dawkins, S, Philadelphia EaglesThursday 10/11, 9:17 AM CT
Brian Dawkins did not practice on Wednesday and did not hold his usual news conference. He may be on the road to missing a third straight game due to a neck stinger. "When you're dealing with nerves, you don't know," head coach Andy Reid admits to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "You just don't know how long those are going to take, so you literally take them day by day." Quintin Mikell has been starting in his place.
Anthony Henry, CB, Dallas CowboysThursday 10/11, 9:09 AM CT
Anthony Henry will miss his second straight game this Sunday due to a high right ankle sprain. "Not real close," head coach Wade Phillips tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "He says he feels a lot better. He didn't go through the walk-through(on Wednesday), so that's not a great sign... I don't think it's an injury you can shoot up and be able to play." Henry suffered the injury in Week 4.
