Marcus Stroud, DT, Buffalo BillsWednesday 2/6, 7:18 PM CT
The Jacksonville Jaguars have hired Gregg Williams to be their new defensive coordinator and assistant head coach, according to ESPN.com. "Gregg Williams is an outstanding football coach, has a wealth of NFL coaching experience and is committed to helping us pursue a world championship," Del Rio said in a statement. "We've established a high standard of defensive play over the past five years here, and I expect that to continue under Gregg."
Michael Boley, LB, Atlanta FalconsWednesday 2/6, 5:49 PM CT
Michael Boley is expected to sign the dotted line in the near future on a contract extension with the Atlanta Falcons, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Boley, who compiled 109 tackles in 2007, is one of those rare strong-side linebackers that can produce solid IDP statistics, while lining up over the tight end.
Matt Leinart, QB, Arizona CardinalsWednesday 2/6, 5:06 PM CT
While there was a report last week that Matt Leinart was going to meet with Dr. James Andrews about a knee problem, sources tell the Arizona Republic that Leinart is healthy and has no knee problems. Leinart is also happy with the rehab of his fractured left collarbone and anticipates being able to fully participate in offseason camps and workouts. Leinart enters training camp as the Cardinals' starting quarterback and still has plenty of upside, but there are those that believe the team would be better off with veteran Kurt Warner under center. Time will tell.
Shaun Hill, QB, San Francisco 49ersWednesday 2/6, 4:38 PM CT
The 49ers have reached an agreement with quarterback Shaun Hill on a three-year contract, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. Hill was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of February. "It's very exciting to be a Niner for another three years and I appreciate the opportunity they're giving me," Hill said. The deal is believed to be worth approximately $2 million a year with playing-time bonuses that could further compensate Hill if he were to win the starting job. If he's capable of playing anywhere near as well for a long period of time as he did down the stretch last year, Hill could legitimately beat out Alex Smith to be the 49ers' starting quarterback in 2008. He's drawn some comparisons to Rams quarterback Marc Bulger.
Eli Manning, QB, New York GiantsWednesday 2/6, 4:32 PM CT
New York Giants HC Tom Coughlin will be rewarded with a new four-year contract worth approximately $5 million per season, according to Newsday.com. "There's no rush," team president John Mara said. "Tom's not going anywhere; we're not going anywhere. It will be done in due course."
Chad Johnson, WR, Cincinnati BengalsWednesday 2/6, 4:03 PM CT
Chad Johnson has been paid almost $16 million in salary and bonuses during the past two seasons, and the Bengals organization would incur an estimated $8 million dollar salary cap hit in 2008 if they were to trade or release him, according to the Enquirer. Since the end of the 2007 season, Ocho Cinco has been publicizing his unhappiness with the Cincinnati organization in the national media. Johnson has the Bengals between a rock and a hard place, holding substantial juice in this stare down. We will keep you updated as this story progresses.
Justin Gage, WR, Tennessee TitansWednesday 2/6, 2:32 PM CT
The Tennessee Titans have initiated contract talks with Justin Gage, according to the Tennessian.com. "There have been some conversations and we'll continue to talk," agent Jim Steiner said. "He would like to stay and if we work out something all parties feel is a fair contract, he will stay."
Brett Favre, QB, Green Bay PackersWednesday 2/6, 1:54 PM CT
The Green Bay Packers have signed HC Mike McCarthy to a new five-year contract worth approximately $4 million per season, according to FOXSports.com. "We have accomplished some of our goals over the past two seasons, but there remains much left to be done," McCarthy said in a statement. "I am excited by the opportunity to meet those challenges and someday return another Lombardi Trophy home to Green Bay."
Matt Hasselbeck, QB, Seattle SeahawksWednesday 2/6, 1:20 PM CT
The Seattle Seahawks have agreed in principle to a five-year contract extension with Jim Mora Jr., according to ESPN.com. Mora has been promoted to assistant head coach, and will also continue to focus on the defensive backfield. This situation is similar to the one in Indianapolis involving Tony Dungy and Jim Caldwell. It appears that Mora will takeover as the head coach in 2008 after Mike Holmgren retires.
Derrick Ward, RB, New York GiantsWednesday 2/6, 12:05 PM CT
The New York Giants have begun contract negotiations with unrestricted free-agent Derrick Ward, according to the NY Star-Ledger. Ward has missed 18 games due to injury the past few seasons, but when healthy has displayed plenty of explosiveness. He is capable of pushing Ahmad Bradshaw for time in the Giants backfield.
