Keyshawn Johnson, WR, Carolina PanthersMonday 2/11, 7:10 PM CT
Bill Parcells has apparently reached out to retired WR Keyshawn Johnson to see if Keyshawn may want to resume his career with the Miami Dolphins according to CBS4. Johnson and Parcells have worked together before including most recently at ESPN as analysts. The Dolphins need talent all over the field, and it matter's little how old that talent is. Johnson could conceivably be a decent possession receiver if he were to re-enter the NFL at age 36, but he will have to shake the rust off after a year of sitting pretty in the studio.
Warrick Holdman, LB, Denver BroncosMonday 2/11, 6:49 PM CT
Warrick Holdman was released by the Broncos on Monday according to a report in the Denver Post. Holdman never played a down for the Broncos after suffering a spinal cord injury in August, 2007. The Broncos added WR Derrick Hamilton to the squad after a year spent on the Taxi squads with the Bucs and the Texans. Neither move has any fantasy implications, but you expect us to report all those news don't you?
Lawrence Tynes, K, New York GiantsMonday 2/11, 5:52 PM CT
Lawrence Tynes will remain the kicker for the Giants for the next five years after agreeing to a 5-year, $7 million deal on Monday according to the NY Star Ledger. The deal is not yet complete, they are still working on some language, but it appears to be almost finished. Tynes put up 109 points last season and was 8-for-8 on 40+ yard kicks though he faltered a bit on kicks from 30-39 yards (5-for-8). Still, Tynes converted 11 of his last 12 kicks during the regular season, and the team was willing to pay for that.
Mike Wahle, G, Seattle SeahawksMonday 2/11, 4:01 PM CT
As expected, the Panthers released guard Mike Wahle on Monday, according to the AP. Wahle started all 16 games last season at left guard. He turns 30 next month and the Panthers clear salary cap space with his release.
Dan Morgan, LB, New Orleans SaintsMonday 2/11, 4:00 PM CT
The Panthers released injury-prone linebacker Dan Morgan and guard Mike Wahle on Monday, according to the AP. Morgan was Carolina's first-round pick in 2001, but played in only 59 of 112 games with the Panthers because of numerous injuries, including at least five concussions. He missed the final 13 games last season with a partially torn right Achilles' tendon.
Terrell Suggs, DE, Baltimore RavensMonday 2/11, 3:51 PM CT
The Ravens are going to keep Terrell Suggs around for at least another year, as the team will slap the franchise tag on him by Feb. 21 -- the deadline for teams to assign franchise tags on players, according to the Baltimore Sun . "We will be using the franchise tag on Terrell if we don't have a long-term deal in place between now and then," Baltimore GM Ozzie Newsome said. Suggs is a terrific player, even though he recorded a career-low five sacks last season.
Keith Traylor, DT, Miami DolphinsMonday 2/11, 3:48 PM CT
Keith Traylor was one of nine players the Dolphins cut in a salary-cap purge on Monday. He recorded just 44 tackles and one sack last season.
Marty Booker, WR, Chicago BearsMonday 2/11, 3:44 PM CT
Marty Booker was one of nine players released by the Dolphins on Monday, according to the team's official website. Booker led the team in receiving last year, although that's not saying much. He caught 50 passes for 556 yards and a TD and is likely to catch on somewhere as a No. 3 or 4 receiver.
Trent Green, QB, St. Louis RamsMonday 2/11, 3:29 PM CT
The Dolphins today terminated the contracts of nine players, including quarterback Trent Green, according to the team's official website. This was no shock as Green suffered his second serious concussion in as many years and his career could be over.
Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Pittsburgh SteelersMonday 2/11, 1:11 PM CT
The Steelers this week will open contract talks with some of their players who can become unrestricted free agents and one who cannot -- quarterback Ben Roethlisberger , according to a report in the Post Gazette. Roethlisberger has two years left on the contract he signed as a rookie in 2004, but both sides have expressed a desire to reach a contract extension this year. Getting a contract extension and getting one quickly was one of three wishes Roethlisberger said he had for the offseason.
Rodney Harrison, S, New England PatriotsMonday 2/11, 12:16 PM CT
Rodney Harrison announced at an autograph-signing session over the weekend that he will return in 2008, according to the Boston Herald. “Right now, at this point, I feel like I’m going to honor the last year of my contract,” Harrison said. “Everyone’s asking me about retirement. I don’t know what to say about it. I haven’t said anything publicly about wanting to retire or anything like that. I’m very hungry to get back to working out and be a part of this team, and try to win another championship.”
Justin Smith, DE, San Francisco 49ersMonday 2/11, 12:12 PM CT
The Dayton Daily News reports that Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau is a big fan of Justin Smith and has always thought that Smith would be a better pass-rusher in a 3-4 defense, which is the defense they run in Pittsburgh. That means if the Bengals don't slap the franchise tag on Smith for the second straight year and allow him to become a free agent, the division rival Steelers are one potential destination. The Steelers are looking to improve their pass-rush up front on defense and Smith would fit in the rotation nicely. Smith had 78 tackles and just two sacks for the Bengals last season.
Todd Heap, TE, Baltimore RavensMonday 2/11, 11:51 AM CT
Todd Heap will train in Baltimore this offseason instead of his home state of Arizona as he looks to recover from the torn left hamstring that limited him to just five games in 2007, according to the Baltimore Sun. "I was so frustrated after this past year trying to get on the field, but my hamstring wouldn't allow it," said Heap. "The biggest thing right now is to get it right through offseason preparation. Also, I'm going to be around here to see what Cam is doing."
Jeremy Shockey, TE, New Orleans SaintsMonday 2/11, 11:45 AM CT
Jeremy Shockey, who is due $1.925 million next season, is rumored to be looking for more money, according to the New York Daily News. Since the Giants won the Super Bowl with Shockey on the sidelines, he doesn't have much bargaining power even if he remains one of the NFL's best pass-catching tight ends.
Rob Bironas, K, Tennessee TitansMonday 2/11, 11:25 AM CT
The Titans and the agent for Rob Bironas have been in discussions about a long-term contract for the Pro Bowler kicker, according to the Nashville Tennessean. Bironas is one of the team's restricted free agents, which means the Titans could sign him to a tender for one more year.
DeShaun Foster, RB, San Francisco 49ersMonday 2/11, 11:21 AM CT
The Rock Hill Herald reports that DeShaun Foster is a candidate to be cut this offseason so that the Panthers can save his $4.75 million base salary. Foster is entering the last year of his deal and had a disappointing 2007 season, averaging just 3.5 YPC and scoring a mere four touchdowns. DeAngelo Williams was far more effective, rushing for 5.0 YPC and scoring one more touchdown despite significantly fewer touches. It's time for the Panthers to make Williams their feature back.
Mike Wahle, G, Seattle SeahawksMonday 2/11, 11:18 AM CT
Panthers guard Mike Wahle is due a $1 million roster bonus and a $3 million base salary, which means he could be a salary-cap casualty this offseason, according to the Rock Hill Herald. Wahle ended the season on IR with a torn labrum in his right shoulder.
Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona CardinalsMonday 2/11, 11:05 AM CT
At the Super Bowl, Larry Fitzgerald told a Philadelphia radio station that the Eagles were one of four teams he would like to be traded to, according to the Denver Post. But at Sunday's Pro Bowl, Fitzgerald backed off the trade requests. "I want it to work out in Arizona," Fitzgerald said. "I want to finish business there, and hopefully we can get a contract done and I'll be there for a long time."
