Trent Dilfer, QB, Tuesday 2/12, 9:31 PM CT
Trent Dilfer will not return to San Francisco next season. The 49ers want him to retire, according to The Press Democrat. That seems to be a logical move, considering the scary concussion Dilfer sustained against the Vikings that ended his season. But Dilfer might choose to seek employment elsewhere, putting his promising TV career on hold for at least another season. The Washington Post reports new Redskins coach Jim Zorn might pursue Dilfer to be the No. 3 quarterback because he knows the offense from their time together in Seattle.
Darwin Walker, DT, Carolina PanthersTuesday 2/12, 9:23 PM CT
The Chicago Sun Times reported Tuesday that the agent for defensive tackle Darwin Walker made it clear his client expects to return as a Bear, but that might be wishful thinking. Walker is due a $5.2 million roster bonus on March 4 after an injury-plagued season. His salary-cap number for 2008 is $6.5 million.
Alan Faneca, G, New York JetsTuesday 2/12, 8:41 PM CT
The Bears have been doing their homework regarding seven-time Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca, according to the Chicago Sun Times. Faneca, who turned 31 in December, is looking for a deal similar to what Steve Hutchinson and Eric Steinbach commanded the last two offseasons. The Sun Times reported it might cost upward of $7 million per season to land the former Pittsburgh Steeler. But if the Bears added Faneca and drafted a tackle high, it would dramatically reshape the line.
Marty Booker, WR, Chicago BearsTuesday 2/12, 8:36 PM CT
Marty Booker told the Chicago Sun Times he wants to go home. A day after the Miami Dolphins released the veteran wide receiver the Bears are considering signing Booker, 31, before he fields other offers. Bears general manager Jerry Angelo traded Booker to Miami for defensive end Adewale Ogunleye before the 2004 season. Because Booker is a vested veteran, he is eligible to sign before free agency opens at 11:01 p.m. on Feb. 28.
Jonathan Ogden, T, Baltimore RavensTuesday 2/12, 8:18 PM CT
Whether All World left tackle Jonathan Ogden will return to Baltimore for organized team activities this spring has yet to be determined. "I think he's right on the fence," new head coach John Harbaugh told the Baltimore Sun. "The times that we've talked, he's torn. He's trying to figure out what he wants to do, and he's going to take his time. He'll approach it very methodically and do what is best for him in his life." Ogden, at 75 percent healthy and motivated, is still better than 75 percent of the league combined.
Steve McNair, QB, Tuesday 2/12, 8:00 PM CT
Steve McNair, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, is progressing on schedule according to the Baltimore Sun. "I think he's going to be healthy," said new head coach John Harbaugh, "there's no question. He's well on his way to being right. He might be in the best shape he's ever been in at this stage of an offseason. He's motivated." Harbaugh was asked whom his starting signal-caller would be heading into organized team activities and the coach responded with "We're not there yet." The chances of McNair starting in '08 is actually better with a new head coach that was a quarterback, but that still might not be good enough for McNair to overcome his injuries, age and limitations because of both.
Flozell Adams, T, Dallas CowboysTuesday 2/12, 5:21 PM CT
Flozell Adams received a $500,000 bonus for making the Pro Bowl reports the Star-Telegram. He was the only one of the 13 Cowboys who played in the NFC's 42-30 victory Sunday to have a Pro Bowl incentive in his contract. Adams could become an unrestricted free agent Feb. 28 if the team doesn’t find a way to sign the big left tackle. The Cowboys might put a franchise tag on him (they have until Feb. 21) to keep him for another year until they can groom his replacement; or they could sign him to a long-term extension or let him become a free agent, however, the latter is the most unlikely of all the team’s options.
Stephen Alexander, TE, Denver BroncosTuesday 2/12, 5:10 PM CT
Stephen Alexander, who is a Broncos unrestricted free agent, is expected to retire this offseason, according to the Rocky Mountain News. The Broncos placed Alexander on injured reserve this past October. The veteran tight end was unable to stay healthy this season due to a fractured fibula.
John Engelberger, DE, Denver BroncosTuesday 2/12, 5:05 PM CT
According to the Rocky Mountain News, John Engelberger is among the list of potential Broncos free agents. Engelberger's contract for the 2008 season has been voided because he hit 25 percent playing- time thresholds the past two seasons. A 15-game starter at left defensive end in 2007, Engelberger participated in 55 percent of the defensive snaps and led the team's linemen with 59 tackles despite playing much of the season with a painful shoulder separation. He logged 37 percent play time in '06. Preliminary discussions already have taken place between Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist and Engelberger's agent, Bob Lattinville, in hopes of keeping the player off the open market.
Ian Gold, LB, Tuesday 2/12, 5:02 PM CT
The Rocky Mountain News reports that the Broncos have been shopping weak-side linebacker Ian Gold, which would open a spot for Jamie Winborn if talks turn into action. Gold also could be released, given his $4.9 million salary-cap figure and a $500,000 roster bonus due in early March.
Bubba Franks, TE, New York JetsTuesday 2/12, 4:54 PM CT
Packers GM Ted Thompson has several tough decisions to make this month according to PackersNews.com. Among those is whether to bring back highly paid veteran TE Bubba Franks. With an expected $25 million in cap room and a team that advanced to the NFC championship game, Thompson will probably ask several players to take pay cuts and be more active in free agency in an attempt to get the team over the hump and into the Super Bowl. Franks is one of the players expected to be asked to assist the team by taking a salary reduction.
Corey Williams, DE, Cleveland BrownsTuesday 2/12, 4:45 PM CT
The odds look long on the Green Bay Packers re-signing defensive tackle Corey Williams according to PackerNews.com The Packers have been in contact with Williams' agent, and both sides have discussed details of a new contract. But considering the possibility Williams could be the most coveted defensive tackle available in a thin free-agent crop this offseason, he could be in for a payday on the open market that General Manager Ted Thompson would consider too steep because of the Packers' depth at that position. Thompson could use the Packers' franchise tag on Williams by the Feb. 21 deadline, and said Monday he has not ruled out that possibility, though the $6.263 million tender would be high for a rotational player at a deep position. If the Packers don't sign or tag him, Williams becomes an unrestricted free agent Feb. 29.
Jamal Lewis, RB, Cleveland BrownsTuesday 2/12, 4:33 PM CT
The Browns GM Phil Savage has several players he must consider re-signing or reworking their contracts, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Quarterback Derek Anderson prefers a six-year contract over the three-year deal proposed by the club. Running back Jamal Lewis wants at least three years while the Browns offered two. Both players are expected to be extended soon.
Marques Colston, WR, New Orleans SaintsTuesday 2/12, 4:23 PM CT
Second-year receiver Marques Colston has outperformed his contract and is now talking with his agent, Joel Segal, to rework his current deal. According to the Sun Herald, Segal is working behind the scenes already for for the Saints' top wideout. Colston's salary pales in comparison to the other top wide receivers in the league. He's set to make $445,000 in base salary for the upcoming campaign and his current agreement expires after the 2008 season.
Jeff Feagles, P, New York GiantsTuesday 2/12, 4:15 PM CT
According to Newsday.com, Giants punter Jeff Feagles will not walk into the sunset with his first Super Bowl ring. He's apparently informed the Giants he'll be back for his 21st season. The Giants now have 17 days to attempt to re-sign LB Kawika Mitchell, DB Gibril Wilson, DE Reggie Torbor and RB Derrick Ward.
Martin Gramatica, K, New Orleans SaintsTuesday 2/12, 4:13 PM CT
The Saints re-signed kicker Martin Gramatica and added two new assistant coaches on Tuesday according to The Times-Picayune. Gramatica joined the Saints for the final three games last year and was outstanding, making all five of his field-goal attempts. He will compete in training camp with friend and fellow veteran Olindo Mare, who struggled for much of the 2007 season before suffering a season-ending hip injury in December.
Marc Bulger, QB, St. Louis RamsTuesday 2/12, 4:10 PM CT
The St. Louis Post Dispatch reported Tuesday that head coach Scott Linehan still isn’t finished retooling his coaching staff. But the heavy lifting has been done. Six members of Linehan’s 19-man staff are gone. Four have been replaced from outside, one from inside, and one spot remains unfilled. The latest moves haven’t been announced yet, but Terry Shea will become the quarterbacks coach and Mike Cox probably will move to assistant secondary coach from defensive quality control-assistant defensive line.
Lance Briggs, LB, Chicago BearsTuesday 2/12, 1:29 PM CT
The Redskins are expected to again pursue Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs , another Drew Rosenhaus client they attempted to trade for last offseason. It's an annual ritual, according to the Washington Post -- converting base salaries to bonuses for cap savings -- and undoubtedly the Redskins will be left with room under the salary cap to add players. Washington's top priority is a receiver, but Briggs is a player owner Dan Snyder as been interested in for well over a year.
Al Wilson, LB, Denver BroncosTuesday 2/12, 11:22 AM CT
Al Wilson is scheduled to visit with the Lions today, a source told the Denver Post. Wilson missed the 2007 season with a neck injury but has been cleared to return to the football field.
Roy Manning, LB, Cincinnati BengalsTuesday 2/12, 11:17 AM CT
The Bengals waived Roy Manning Monday. Manning played in five games for the Bengals last year after being claimed off waivers from the Jaguars, recording seven special teams tackles.
T.J. Slaughter, LB, New England PatriotsTuesday 2/12, 11:12 AM CT
The Patriots signed T.J. Slaughter on Monday. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. Slaughter, who spent last year in San Francisco, is expected to compete for a backup spot at inside linebacker, according to the Boston Globe.
Kenechi Udeze, DE, Minnesota VikingsTuesday 2/12, 11:02 AM CT
Kenechi Udeze has been diagnosed with a form of leukemia. Udeze is undergoing tests and his doctors are trying to determine the severity of the leukemia, according to SportsTicker. The defensive end recorded 47 tackles and five sacks last year for the Vikes.
Chad Johnson, WR, Cincinnati BengalsTuesday 2/12, 10:37 AM CT
Sources around the league have affirmed that the Redskins have interest in trading for disgruntled Bengals receiver Chad Johnson, according to the Washington Post. The Bengals, at least publicly, have said they have no intention of trading Johnson, but the receiver's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is working quietly to broker a deal, the sources said.
