Marty Booker, WR, Chicago BearsMonday 2/18, 11:14 PM CT
Marty Booker will add the Patriots to the list of team's interested in his services when he visits the club on Tuesday, this according to a report in the Boston Globe. With Donte Stallworth on his way out of town, the Pats would love to secure the services of Booker especially with the status of Jabar Gaffney also up in the air.
Nick Novak, K, Kansas City ChiefsMonday 2/18, 10:47 PM CT
The Kansas City Chiefs agreed to two-year contracts with seven reserve/future free agents, according to the KC Star. One of the seven was ex-Chicago kicker Nick Novak, president Carl Peterson announced Monday. Novak was in the Bears Training Camp in August but was released before Week 1.
Lito Sheppard, CB, Philadelphia EaglesMonday 2/18, 9:36 PM CT
Lito Sheppard will not be allowed to seek a trade according to a report on Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia which quotes an Eagles team source as saying "Any reports that suggest we have allowed Lito or his agent to seek a trade are absolutely and undeniably false," a team spokesman said. The report also goes on to state that when Lito was called and asked about it that he had no idea what was going on and that he thought it was a joke. Lito doesn't appear on his way out of Philly anytime soon, so just chalk up the earlier report to rumor spreading.
Jared Allen, DE, Minnesota VikingsMonday 2/18, 9:04 PM CT
Jared Allen has been deemed the Chiefs "franchise player" according to a report on the AP. As a result, Allen will receive a 1-year salary of $8.879 million, the average of the top-5 players are his position. Allen sat out two games last season, but that didn't stop him from setting a career-high with an NHL leading 15.5 sacks. Allen now has 43 sacks in 61 career games.
Billy Cundiff, K, Kansas City ChiefsMonday 2/18, 7:22 PM CT
Billy Cundiff signed a 2-year deal to kick for the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday according to the AP. Dave Rayner wasn't able to give the team any consistency in 2007, he made only 12 of 18 kicks under 49 yards in 10 games before being replaced by John Carney. Not an exciting signing to be sure, but at least the Chiefs shouldn't have to deal with any of the troubles they experienced last season.
Tom Brady, QB, New England PatriotsMonday 2/18, 5:43 PM CT
Following up our earlier report on the Spygate allegations, here is a long quote from Pats HC Bill Belichick about the whole event on ESPN. "In my entire coaching career, I've never seen another team's practice film prior to playing that team," Belichick said. "I have never authorized, or heard of, or even seen in any way, shape, or form any other team's walk-through. We don't even film our own. We don't even want to see ourselves do anything, that's the pace that it's at. Regardless, I've never been a part of that." If proof surfaces in the future that the Pats are guilty, this statement will mark Belichick as an outright liar, so we hope for his sake that he is telling the truth here and not pulling a Marion Jones.
Lito Sheppard, CB, Philadelphia EaglesMonday 2/18, 5:38 PM CT
Lito Sheppard has been given permission to seek a trade according to a report on the NFL Network this afternoon, a fact that was confirmed by Jon Clayton as well. Sheppard, just 26-years-old, will certainly be a big target if this report turns out to be true as he is an extremely solid CB that could help strengthen any team's backfield.
Ernest Wilford, WR, Miami DolphinsMonday 2/18, 5:30 PM CT
Solomon Wilcotts of Sirius Radio is reporting that the Bills are "enamored" with FA wide receiver Ernest Wilford, and that he very well could be their top target once the free agent period begins on February 29th. Wilford is a big receiver, he is 6'4" and weighs 223 pounds, and he moves the chains with 35 of his 45 receptions going for first downs. Wilford hasn't produced that big season yet, but he has averaged 41 and 573 yards the past three season's in Jacksonville.
Alex Brown, DE, Chicago BearsMonday 2/18, 4:12 PM CT
The Bears are working on inking the team's player personnel and potential free agent's according to NFL.com. On Monday, Chicago signed defensive end Alex Brown to a two-year contract extension. Brown had two years left on his existing contract.
Muhsin Muhammad, WR, Carolina PanthersMonday 2/18, 4:08 PM CT
The Chicago Bears released veteran wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad on Monday, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter. The veteran Muhammed finished the 2007 season with 40 catches for 570 yards and three touchdowns.
Darren McFadden, RB, Oakland RaidersMonday 2/18, 2:00 PM CT
LoneStarStruck.com backs up an earlier report by the Dallas Morning News that the team will not trade up to draft Arkansas RB Darren McFadden. The Cowboys have $10 million left in their salary cap and have to take care of their free agents and draft picks. Fantasy owners in Keeper Leagues that own Marion Barber would like to see the team use him as the primary running back and offer the ex-Gopher 350 touches in 2008.
Marion Barber, RB, Dallas CowboysMonday 2/18, 1:57 PM CT
According to a reports at the Star-Telegram, the Cowboys will talk with new starting RB Marion Barber and his agent this week at the NFL Combine. Barber is a restricted free agent that is expected to be signed long-term and replace starter Julius Jones who will not be resigned by the team. Expect Barber's 250 touches in 2007 to grow to 350 in 2008 barring the team signing a free agent tailback or drafting one in the upcoming NFL Amateur selection process.
Landon Johnson, LB, Carolina PanthersMonday 2/18, 12:27 PM CT
Landon Johnson is now eligible for unrestricted free agency beginning Feb. 29 since the team has chosen to tag offensive lineman Stacy Andrews, according to Bengals Blog. The team will meet with Johnson's agent and discuss a contract extension. Last week, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said team negotiators had been in contact with all of the team's free agents and are working hard to get players inked.
Stacy Andrews, T, Cincinnati BengalsMonday 2/18, 12:23 PM CT
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Bengals placed the franchise tag on offensive lineman Stacy Andrews Monday. He has been offered a one-year salary tender by the team for $7.455 million, the average of the top five salaries by offensive lineman last year.
Donte Stallworth, WR, Cleveland BrownsMonday 2/18, 12:19 PM CT
The Tampa Tribune suggests that the Bucs will make a play on Patriots receiver Donte Stallworth, if in fact he is released as reports suggest. Word out of New England is that Stallworth will be let go sometime this week.
Alge Crumpler, TE, Tennessee TitansMonday 2/18, 12:16 PM CT
The Bucs are waiting to talk with recently released TE Alge Crumpler , according to the Tampa Tribune. The report notes that Crumpler is still not a free agent. Not technically. The release of the Falcons' five last week has yet to show up on the league wire report. The team expects Crumpler to officially be a free agent sometime this afternoon or tomorrow morning. The Panthers, Saints and Colts are other teams showing interest in the former All Pro.
Rex Grossman, QB, Chicago BearsMonday 2/18, 10:02 AM CT
Jerry Angelo talked about the prospect of keeping Rex Grossman in Chicago on Monday, according to the Da Bears Blog. "We would definitely like to have Rex back. We’ve talked internally, and at some point we will visit with him and see if we can create a situation that’s workable for all of us. We’ve invested a lot in Rex, and we see him competing for the starting position. Given the familiarity that he has with our system and us with him, there’s no downside. He’s been a good soldier for us in terms of whatever role we’ve asked him to play, particularly this past season. We feel that having him in the mix makes us a better football team." The Bears blog noted that they expect No. 8 under center when the season starts in September. This of course would be quite unfortunate unless the Bears can ignite a fire in Cedric Benson's belly -- thus not having to throw the ball 40 times per game.
Kyle Boller, QB, Baltimore RavensMonday 2/18, 9:22 AM CT
With Brian Billick out of Baltimore, the Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said he was beginning a search for the next Hall of Fame coach according to Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com. Bisciotti interviewed everyone available, and even considered veteran NFL head man Marty Schottenheimer before taking what Yasinskas considered, an unconventional route. Bisciotti hired John Harbaugh, who never had been a head coach on any level. While it's a thin limb to climb out on when projecting Hall of Fame careers, the report notes that "... if there's a potential Hall of Famer among the NFL's four new hires this year, it will be Harbaugh or somebody with a similar unheralded background." Expect Harbaough to go young moving Kyle Boller into the starting role in 2008.
Zach Thomas, LB, Dallas CowboysMonday 2/18, 8:45 AM CT
Zach Thomas is expected to make a visit to Foxboro and the New England Patriots today, notes the Dallas News. It is the first in-house visit for the veteran linebacker since being cut by the Miami Dolphins last week. Thomas is reportedly scheduled to make visits to New Orleans and Dallas in the near future.
Tom Brady, QB, New England PatriotsMonday 2/18, 8:28 AM CT
Patriots coach Bill Belichick and team VP of player personnel, Scott Pioli, broke their silence regarding taping procedures, according to the Boston Globe. The two suggested that the improper conduct, and SpyGate's continuing saga, was because of former employee Matt Walsh's indiscretions. Belichick told the Globe he "couldn't pick Matt Walsh out of a lineup" and Pioli noted that part of the reason for Walsh's firing was because of him secretly tape-recording conversations.
