Jevon Kearse, DE, Tennessee TitansTuesday 3/4, 11:59 PM CT
Free-agent DE Jevon Kearse (Eagles) will visit the Tennessee Titans Wednesday, March 5, as reported by Paul Kuharsky of the Tennessean.
Marty Booker, WR, Chicago BearsTuesday 3/4, 10:00 PM CT
Marty Booker agreed to a two-year contract with the Bears on Tuesday evening, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. After losing Mushin Muhammed and Bernard Berrian to free agency, the Bears picked up a veteran presence, who can at least take care of business. But he's a long way from the 197 catches he pulled in between 2001 and 2002 in his first stint with the Bears; he hasn't even topped 55 catches in a season since then. He could start, depending on what other players they bring in via free agency.
Warrick Dunn, RB, Tampa Bay BuccaneersTuesday 3/4, 9:43 PM CT
Updating a previous story, running back Warrick Dunn is receiving interest from a multitude of teams, according to the Houston Chronicle. The teams listed as potential suitors include the Houston Texans, the Detroit Lions, and the Denver Broncos. The Texans are reportedly seeking to meet with the veteran running back while the others are reported to have made contact with Dunn's agent.
Javon Walker, WR, Oakland RaidersTuesday 3/4, 9:05 PM CT
Javon Walker , recently released by the Denver Broncos, has reached terms with the Oakland Raiders, according to ESPN. Michael Smith reports Walker will sign a deal for six years worth $55 million with over $16 million in guarantees, paying Walker approximately $27 million over the first three years.
Julius Jones, RB, Seattle SeahawksTuesday 3/4, 8:49 PM CT
Julius Jones was in Detroit on Tuesday to visit with the Lions, according to the Detroit Free Press. Jones is the top free agent running back out there after Michael Turner signed with the Falcons. Kevin Jones may not be ready when next season gets underway, and T.J. Duckett just left the Lions for Seattle, so the team is looking to add some depth to their running back corps. The Lions also brought in free agents defensive tackle Chuck Darby, linebacker Dan Morgan and offensive lineman Corey Hulsey for a visit.
Jeb Putzier, TE, Seattle SeahawksTuesday 3/4, 7:50 PM CT
The Seattle Seahawks have signed TE Jeb Putzier to a one-year deal, according to the Tacoma New Tribune. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Jabar Gaffney, WR, New England PatriotsTuesday 3/4, 7:33 PM CT
Jabar Gaffney has come to terms with the New England Patriots, signing a one-year agreement for $2 million, according to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network.
Jimmy Kennedy, DT, Jacksonville JaguarsTuesday 3/4, 6:59 PM CT
The Bears decided against matching the Jaguars' offer sheet for Jimmy Kennedy, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. That means the defensive tackle is now a Jaguar and will make $605,000, plus a $50,000 signing bonus in 2008. He was just a backup last year and will serve in the same role for the Jags.
Maurice Hicks, RB, Minnesota VikingsTuesday 3/4, 6:33 PM CT
Maurice Hicks has agreed to a three-year contract with the Vikings, according to the AP. Mewelde Moore bolted for Pittsburgh last night, so the Vikings were looking for a No. 3 back behind Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor. Hicks should continue to have no fantasy value, barring injuries to Peterson and Taylor, but he should become the Vikes' primary returner.
T.J. Duckett, RB, Seattle SeahawksTuesday 3/4, 5:39 PM CT
As expected, T.J. Duckett has agreed join the Seahawks as a free agent, according to the AP. He signed a five-year contract on Tuesday, though financial details weren't released. He'll see some action at the goal line in 2008, but that's about all you can expect from him.
Anthony Clement, T, New York JetsTuesday 3/4, 3:29 PM CT
The New York Jets have announced that they have released right tackle Anthony Clement, according to Pro Football Talk. Clement, who was signed by the Jets in 2006, started 32 regular-season games and one postseason contest in New York. He likely will be replaced by free-agent acquisition Damien Woody.
Andre Woolfolk, DB, New York JetsTuesday 3/4, 3:25 PM CT
The New York Jets have announced that they have signed cornerback Andre Woolfolk, according to Pro Football Talk. Woolfolk was a first-round pick of the Titans in 2003, but was out of football in 2007 after receiving an injury settlement from the Titans due to a hamstring injury.
Jevon Kearse, DE, Tennessee TitansTuesday 3/4, 2:54 PM CT
As more and more free agent defensive ends sign elsewhere, Minnesota is contemplating a run at Jevon Kearse, according to Minneapolis Star Tribune. The Vikings were interested in both Antwaan Odom and Travis LaBoy, who have since signed with Cincinnati and Arizona respectively. Kearse, who was released last month by Philadelphia, has struggled with various injuries the past few seasons, which have reduced his effectiveness. He spent a total of five seasons in Philadelphia, including three when Vikings coach Brad Childress was Eagles offensive coordinator. Kearse fractured his tibia and tore cartilage in his left knee midway through the 2006 season, and that injury was partially to blame for a 3 1/2-sack season in 2007.
Marlon McCree, S, Denver BroncosTuesday 3/4, 2:43 PM CT
Marlon McCree is scheduled to visit the Buffalo Bills today, according to buffalobills.com. The eighth-year free safety was recently released by San Diego just two seasons after signing a five-year deal worth a reported $16 million in the 2006 offseason. McCree became expendable due to the late season emergence of Eric Weddle. Buffalo is looking to possibly add some veteran leadership to a youthful secondary, and McCree was a productive part of San Diego's defense last season contributing 67 tackles, three interceptions, six pass breakups and a forced fumble in his 16 regular season starts.
Ben Troupe, TE, Tampa Bay BuccaneersTuesday 3/4, 2:36 PM CT
The free agency carousel continues to turn at One Bills Drive with a visit from free agent tight end Ben Troupe, according to buffalobills.com. Troupe, who has been slowed by various injuries during his career, landed in head coach Jeff Fisher’s doghouse last year in Tennessee. However, he is an athletically gifted player, who could provide the size and speed to create match-up problems in the passing game for Buffalo.
Chris Crocker, S, Miami DolphinsTuesday 3/4, 1:58 PM CT
The Houston Texans have lined up a visit with Atlanta free agent safety Chris Crocker, according to the Houston Chronicle. The Texans are interested in a free safety in case they're unable to re-sign Will Demps, who is getting interest from other teams, including Washington.
Jason Webster, CB, New England PatriotsTuesday 3/4, 1:16 PM CT
The New England Patriots have added another piece in their team-building process today, finalizing a contract agreement with CB Jason Webster, according to the Boston Globe. Webster, who flew into town last night and met with team officials this morning at Gillette Stadium, projects to compete for time at cornerback, where the Patriots are restocking after losing Asante Samuel and Randall Gay in free agency.
Roy Williams, WR, Detroit LionsTuesday 3/4, 1:02 PM CT
Despite rumors that the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills have displayed strong interest in Detroit receiver Roy Williams, the chances are very slim he will be traded, according to mlive.com. The rumors continue to circulate because Williams has only one year remaining on his salary cap friendly contract, which would make it breeze if the organization wanted to trade him. The Lions certainly entertained thoughts of trading Williams not too long ago, and the rumors could increase during the offseason, but the odds of it actually happening appear to be slim to none.
Brett Favre, QB, Green Bay PackersTuesday 3/4, 12:47 PM CT
ESPN.com reporter Chris Mortensen said that he received a voice message from quarterback Brett Favre explaining that his decision to retire was based on his unwillingness to prepare for a season that he couldn't be assured would end in a Super Bowl victory, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette. "I know I can still play, but it's like I told my wife, I'm just tired mentally. I'm just tired," Favre said. "I know it shouldn't feel unsuccessful, but the only way to come back and make that be the right decision would be to come back and win a Super Bowl and honestly the odds of that, they're tough. Those are big shoes for me to fill, and I guess it was a challenge I wasn't up for. " This latest update makes Lord Favre's retirement seem like more of a reality.
Musa Smith, RB, Baltimore RavensTuesday 3/4, 12:38 PM CT
Musa Smith doesn’t have any visits currently scheduled, and would like to remain in Baltimore, according to the Carroll County Times. “We’re in a wait-and-see mode with Musa,” said Jack Reale, Smith’s agent. “Musa’s a good football player and he would love to be back with Baltimore. Hopefully, something can be worked out.” Baltimore recently released running back Mike Anderson, so if Smith can stick in Baltimore he would have a chance to backup Willis McGahee in 2008.
Javon Walker, WR, Oakland RaidersTuesday 3/4, 12:26 PM CT
The Dallas Cowboys could be the frontrunners in the Javon Walker sweepstakes, according to the San Antonio Express News. The report states that Walker is a big fan of current Dallas wide receivers coach, Ray Sherman, who coached him in Green Bay – helping the free agent receiver to make the Pro Bowl. Walker might not provide the wow factor that owner Jerry Jones is looking for, but he has twice compiled 1,000-yard seasons during his career. If healthy, Walker could be a nice complimentary receiver on the other side of Terrell Owens.
Ian Scott, DT, Carolina PanthersTuesday 3/4, 12:16 PM CT
Philadelphia free-agent defensive tackle Ian Scott visited the Carolina Panthers on Monday, according to the Charlotte Observer. The team is looking to add depth to the position after the recent trade of Kris Jenkins to the New York Jets. The Panthers have also hosted a visit with Rod Coleman, who they are interested in signing, if he can pass a physical.
Kris Wilson, TE, Philadelphia EaglesTuesday 3/4, 12:07 PM CT
The Green Bay Packers have expressed a strong interest in tight end Kris Wilson and will bring him in for a visit, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Wilson has the ability to lineup at tight end and H-back, much like the recently released Bubba Franks. Wilson, who is not a big-time receiving threat, has averaged just 8 yards per catch over the last two seasons. Donald Lee will be the starter again next season and the coaches have high hopes for Tory Humphrey, who broke his leg in training camp and missed all of last season. The 6-2, 250-pound Humphrey has decent speed and good pass-catching potential and will be given every opportunity to win the No. 2 spot.
Ron Dayne, RB, Houston TexansTuesday 3/4, 11:53 AM CT
The Houston Texans are interested in bringing in running back Warrick Dunn for a visit, which could lead to the club releasing Ron Dayne, according to the Houston Chronicle. The Texans have Ahman Green, Darius Walker and Chris Taylor under contract, so signing another back would leave Dayne, an unrestricted free agent, as the odd man out in the rotation.
Darryl Blackstock, LB, Cincinnati BengalsTuesday 3/4, 11:45 AM CT
Darryl Blackstock, a three-year veteran of the Arizona Cardinals who was not tendered by the team, will visit the Cleveland Browns today and work out tomorrow, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Blackstock is a rush linebacker with experience in the 3-4 defense, thereby familiar with Romeo Crennel's defense and philosophy. Blackstock has been primarily a backup and special-teams player in Arizona, but some scouts think he can develop into an every-down player in the right system. Last season, he had 21 tackles, one forced fumble and three sacks. Miami and Cincinnati are also believed to be interested.
Sammy Knight, S, New York GiantsTuesday 3/4, 11:40 AM CT
The New York Giants consider recently signed safety Sammy Knight a stopgap solution at the position, according to the Daily News. Knight is a journeyman, who has played for New Orleans, Miami, Kansas City and Jacksonville. He has 42 career interceptions, and will keep the seat warm until the Giants are convinced Michael Johnson - a seventh-round pick last year - is ready for a full-time role.
Bryant Johnson, WR, San Francisco 49ersTuesday 3/4, 11:33 AM CT
Bryant Johnson enjoyed his visit with Buffalo yesterday, and though he has visits scheduled with other teams including Washington, he wouldn’t mind if his travel plans were canceled to sign with the organization, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. "I definitely think I fit in good with the Bills," Johnson said. "Hopefully I won't have to take any more visits after I leave here. My agent is going to talk with them (the Bills) and hopefully we can work something out and make both of us happy." Sounds like Johnson is ready to sign if the Bills organization is ready to step up to the plate with an offer. The team definitely has a need for a receiver upgrade on the other side of Lee Evans.
Brett Favre, QB, Green Bay PackersTuesday 3/4, 11:27 AM CT
Brett Favre’s agent, James (Bus) Cook, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel this morning that he believes Favre wants to play another year and didn't get the sense that the Packers wanted him back all that badly. "It's my opinion," Cook said of the Packers' lack of interest. "I know he wants to play one more year. I do not know much conversation there was (between Favre and the Packers) and I don't think anyone forced him to make that decision. But I don't know that anyone tried to talk him out of it." Cook said that Favre feels physically and mentally capable of playing at least one more year. "I think he wanted to play," Cook said. " I think he's still got it. He knows he's still got it. I think he felt he could play one more year. I don't know if they told him they really wanted him to play. That's just the feeling I got." There are already conspiracy theories developing that Favre could still choose to play in 2008, and we have a feeling this story is far from over.
Tyler Brayton, DE, Carolina PanthersTuesday 3/4, 10:46 AM CT
The Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers are competing to sign defensive end Tyler Brayton, according to the Indianapolis Star. Brayton reportedly visited Carolina during the weekend, and met with Indianapolis yesterday. "Both are attractive options,'' said Tom Mills, Brayton's agent. "The Colts obviously are very appealing to Tyler.'' Brayton would stand a better chance of starting in Carolina. The Panthers could release Mike Rucker, and the players behind him on the depth chart (Charles Johnson and Stanley McClover) are both inexperienced.
Warren Sapp, DE, Oakland RaidersTuesday 3/4, 10:34 AM CT
The Oakland Raiders officially placed defensive tackle Warren Sapp on the retired list, according to ESPN. Sapp announced his retirement shortly after the 2007 season, making this transaction a formality that frees up $4.153 million of cap room.
Brett Favre, QB, Green Bay PackersTuesday 3/4, 10:26 AM CT
The Green Bay Packers officially announced quarterback Brett Favre's retirement, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The following statement was issued by general manager Ted Thompson: "Brett Favre has informed us of his intention to retire from the Green Bay Packers and the NFL. He has had one of the greatest careers in the history of the National Football League, and he is able to walk away from the game on his own terms – not many players are able to do that. "The Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude. He has given Packers fans 16 years of wonderful memories, a Super Bowl championship among them, that will live on forever. Brett’s many accomplishments on the field are legendary. He leaves the game holding virtually every career passing record, plus his consecutive starts streak, which may never be duplicated. "The uniqueness of Brett Favre – his personality, charisma and love of the game – undoubtedly will leave him as one of the enduring figures in NFL history."
Warrick Dunn, RB, Tampa Bay BuccaneersTuesday 3/4, 10:20 AM CT
The representatives for running back Warrick Dunn have put in a call to the Dallas Cowboys to gauge their interest in signing the recently released veteran, according to the Dallas Morning News. "The Cowboys are on Warrick's radar," said a representative at CAA, the firm that represents Dunn. CAA has not heard back with definitive word from Dallas. Dunn, 33, is one of just 22 backs in NFL history to rush for more than 10,000 yards. In 2007, his streak of three straight 1,000-yard seasons was snapped, as Dunn rushed for 720 yards and averaged 3.2 yards per carry. Dunn could provide a versatile compliment to Marion Barber in Dallas.
Dewayne Robertson, DT, Denver BroncosTuesday 3/4, 10:10 AM CT
The New York Jets tried to unload the underachieving Dewayne Robertson on the Cincinnati Bengals, but a tentative trade fell through partly because the nose tackle has a bone-on-bone condition in his knee, according to the Daily News. The Bengals had agreed to send fourth- and fifth-round picks in the upcoming draft to the Jets, contingent on Robertson signing a new contract and passing a physical. It appears he couldn't pass the physical, and there were other reports that the two sides couldn't agree on a contract extension.
Chad Pennington, QB, New York JetsTuesday 3/4, 9:58 AM CT
The New York Jets are in win-now mode making quarterback Chad Pennington the likely starter for the organization in 2008, according to the Daily News. This report could be more speculation than fact, as GM Mike Tannenbaum emphasized he’s not into a quick fix - and the recent flurry of free agent signings was made in the interest of building the franchise for the long-term. The much-maligned Pennington is expected to compete with Kellen Clemens for the starting job during the offseason.
Chris Naeole, G, Tuesday 3/4, 9:50 AM CT
The Jacksonville Jaguars have released guard Chris Naeole, ending the veteran lineman's six-year tenure with the team, according to the Sports Network. The 33-year old Naeole spent the past six seasons of his 11-year career in Jacksonville, but missed the final eight regular season games of the 2007 season after tearing his quadriceps tendon. He could catch on with another team in a backup role.
Leigh Bodden, CB, Detroit LionsTuesday 3/4, 9:44 AM CT
Leigh Bodden is hoping to restructure his contract into a long-term deal, according to mlive.com. Bodden, 26, has two years remaining on his contract, but is looking for a raise. Bodden, who has been a starter the past three years with the Cleveland Browns, posted six interceptions last year. He will immediately step into a starting role; he played on the right side last year with the Browns, but he's versatile and can play either side. The Lions are looking for another starting cornerback, and if they can't fill that spot in free agency, they're expected to do so with a first- or second-round pick in the draft.
Dontarrious Thomas, LB, San Francisco 49ersTuesday 3/4, 9:29 AM CT
The San Francisco 49ers recently signed linebacker Dontarrious Thomas to a two-year contract, and he’s expected to start at inside linebacker, alongside Patrick Willis, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Thomas spent the first four years of his career with Minnesota after being drafted out of Auburn in the second round in 2004. With the Vikings, Thomas played in 59 games (10 starts) and recorded 145 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
Isaac Bruce, WR, San Francisco 49ersTuesday 3/4, 9:23 AM CT
Isaac Bruce is projected to start for the 49ers on the other side of wide receiver Darrell Jackson, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. This makes sense given Bruce’s familiarity with new offensive coordinator Mike Martz’s scheme. The frontrunner for the third receiver role will be Arnaz Battle, who will likely compete with Ashley Lelie for the role. Battle has an edge because he is a prolific run blocker.
Napoleon Harris, LB, Kansas City ChiefsTuesday 3/4, 9:11 AM CT
Though the Kansas City Chiefs recently signed linebacker Demorrio Williams to a long-term deal, there are no plans to release linebacker Napoleon Harris, according to the Kansas City Star. The Chiefs plan to use Williams as a starter at one outside linebacker position, with Donnie Edwards moving to the middle. Derrick Johnson would keep his starting spot, with Harris moving to a reserve role. Head coach Herman Edwards did say that Harris would need to play better, which makes it sound like he’s not completely out of the woods. Harris signed a six-year, $24.5 million contract prior to last season, making him an expensive benchwarmer.
Marcus Trufant, CB, Seattle SeahawksTuesday 3/4, 8:54 AM CT
Marcus Trufant has made a new contract proposal to the Seattle Seahawks, according to the News Tribune. The new deal would reportedly average less than cornerback Asante Samuel received ($9.5 million per season) from Philadelphia. Signing Trufant to a long-term deal would likely reduce his number against the salary cap – allowing the organization to sign some free agents.
Brett Favre, QB, Green Bay PackersTuesday 3/4, 8:40 AM CT
Brett Favre has decided to call it quits, according to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer. The future Hall of Famer apparently informed the Packers of his decision within the last few days, though it's unclear when he and the team will announce the decision publicly. Favre is coming off a terrific year, having thrown for 4,157 yards and 28 TDs, but at 38, he's apparently decided to move on. Unless the Cheeseheads go out and acquire a quarterback, Aaron Rodgers will take over under center.
Javon Walker, WR, Oakland RaidersTuesday 3/4, 8:39 AM CT
Javon Walker might be on the Philadelphia Eagles radar after missing out on Randy Moss, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Walker, 29, had the Eagles' interest in 2006 before being traded from Green Bay to Denver. He caught 69 passes for 1,084 yards and eight touchdowns in his first season with the Broncos in 2006, but was a major disappointment last year missing eight games due to his problematic right knee. There are other rumors circulating that every team in the NFC East has interest in Walker.
Alge Crumpler, TE, Tennessee TitansTuesday 3/4, 8:33 AM CT
Head coach Jeff Fisher envisions new tight end Alge Crumpler being a major red zone threat according to the City Paper. “He has 35 [career] touchdown catches, so he knows how to get open in the end zone,” Fisher said at Monday’s news conference introducing Crumpler. “He knows how to get in the end zone.” Crumpler, who has scored 13 touchdowns the past two seasons, should provide a nice shot in the arm to a passing offense that only crossed the stripe nine times through the air in 2007.
Lito Sheppard, CB, Philadelphia EaglesTuesday 3/4, 8:18 AM CT
The Philadelphia Eagles remain locked in trade talks for cornerback Lito Sheppard, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The report cites a league source that said the Eagles were continuing to field offers from several undisclosed teams for Sheppard, and the offers have been for both draft picks and players. Sheppard became expendable when the team made Asante Samuel the first major signing of free agency.
