Jonathan Stewart, RB, Carolina PanthersThursday 3/13, 7:39 PM CT
NFL prospect Jonathan Stewart has underwent surgery on his big toe and will miss four to six months. He may still have a shot to be ready in time for the start of training camp. This according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.
Nick Greisen, LB, Baltimore RavensThursday 3/13, 6:49 PM CT
Nick Greisen will sign a three-year deal worth $4 million, which includes a $1 million signing bonus. Greisen had 38 tackles on defense as a reserve last season.
Mark Brunell, QB, New Orleans SaintsThursday 3/13, 6:00 PM CT
Mark Brunell has landed in New Orleans, according to the Washington Post. Terms of the deal are yet to be released. Brunell should compete for the backup job behind Brees.
Chris Brown, RB, Houston TexansThursday 3/13, 4:43 PM CT
Chris Brown has inked a deal with the Texans, according to the Houston Chronicle. Details of the contract are yet to be released but Coach Kubiak said, "Brown is an ideal fit in the new system being installed by assistant head coach Alex Gibbs."
Kevin Jones, RB, Chicago BearsThursday 3/13, 4:26 PM CT
Kevin Jones has been released, according to the Detroit Free Press. Coach Marinelli stated (also mentioning Kalimba Edwards release), “As I’ve said all along, we will always make decisions that we believe are in the best interest of our entire football team. As the off-season has evolved from our postseason roster evaluation to the combine to the free agency period, we feel we’ve made several moves to improve our team. With the off-season program beginning next week and with our draft preparation intensifying, we decided this was the right time to make these two roster moves. While there are always a number of factors that go into this type of decision, we do believe these moves bring clarity to our roster and also eliminate some uncertainty heading into the draft that would have otherwise existed. We sincerely appreciate the contributions that Kevin and Kalimba have made to our football team and we wish them the very best. We appreciate their hard work and professionalism during their time with the Lions.”
Kalimba Edwards, DE, Oakland RaidersThursday 3/13, 4:21 PM CT
Kalimba Edwards has been released by the Lions, according to The Detroit Free Press. Edwards never developed into anything more than a situational pass-rusher for the Lions.
Trent Dilfer, QB, Thursday 3/13, 4:18 PM CT
Trent Dilfer has been released by the 49ers, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. The team is carrying four quarterbacks right now and he was expendable. Coach Nolan commented, ""Trent Dilfer is a true professional in every meaning of the word," 49ers coach Mike Nolan said. "He is one of the most respected players in the league for good reason. Trent has provided great value to our team over the past two years in terms of his leadership, knowledge of the game and play on the field."
Cadillac Williams, RB, Tampa Bay BuccaneersThursday 3/13, 3:17 PM CT
There are quiet concerns within the Tampa Bay organization that running back Cadillac Williams' knee injury might be career-ending, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Given the magnitude of the damage, that certainly is a possibility, but no one has resigned themselves to that doomsday scenario yet. Williams, the third-year pro, suffered a devastating torn patellar tendon to his right knee Oct. 1 in a 20-7 victory at Carolina. The image of Williams stopping on the sidelines to make a cut, then grabbing his knee and falling to the ground was one of the most enduring -- and easily most horrific -- of the Bucs 2007 season.
Gary Baxter, S, Thursday 3/13, 3:09 PM CT
The Cleveland Browns have signed defensive back Gary Baxter to a one-year contract, according to ClevelandBrowns.com. Baxter has been working his way back onto the field during the past 17 months since injuring patellar tendons in both knees on Oct. 22, 2006 during a game against the Denver Broncos. "This is very important for me to sign a one-year deal here and to finish something I started," Baxter said. "This has been a long process but right now everything is going well and I'm going to continue my quest to make history. Both Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel brought me back and that shows a lot of loyalty and respect on the Browns' behalf. They know how hard I've been working. I'm running and feeling good--I'm putting in everything I've got. Things are looking very positive." Baxter played in three games in '06 and five games in '05 for the Browns after signing with the team on March 5, 2005. Baxter was one of Phil Savage's first big-name free agent signings as general manager of the Browns. The 29-year-old sat out the entire 2007 season while continuing to recover. He remained on the team's active roster for the first six weeks of the season and practiced on a limited basis before being placed on injured-reserve during October.
Kevin Jones, RB, Chicago BearsThursday 3/13, 3:03 PM CT
There are rumors circulating that running back Kevin Jones could be released by the Detroit Lions, according to Pro Football Talk. Supposedly there are rumors suggesting Jones would have been released if the team had signed Julius Jones, and KJ is telling teammates that he has been released. This is an unsubstantiated rumor at this point, but sometimes where there’s smoke… there's fire.
Domonique Foxworth, CB, Atlanta FalconsThursday 3/13, 2:55 PM CT
The Denver Broncos are close to signing cornerback Domonique Foxworth to a long-term contract, according to Newsday.com. Foxworth was mentioned in earlier reports as possible trade bait with New York, in a potential deal that could bring defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson to Denver. Now it appears Foxworth will stay in Denver to play in the nickel role behind Dre Bly and Champ Bailey.
Chris Brown, RB, Houston TexansThursday 3/13, 1:33 PM CT
Chris Brown has attracted interest from the Chicago Bears according to FanNation. Brown is scheduled to visit with Houston today, and there are reports that Denver is also interested in his services.
Anquan Boldin, WR, Arizona CardinalsThursday 3/13, 1:24 PM CT
The Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys could explore the availability of receiver Anquan Boldin, according to FanNation. All of these teams have attempted to acquire a big-name receiver during the offseason, and could be interested in trading for Larry Fitzgerald’s sidekick in Arizona. Last season, Arizona offered Boldin a contract extension, but he told them to wait until Fitzgerald’s deal was extended. It’s highly unlikely that Arizona will move Boldin, who is considered a team leader and key component in the Cardinals passing game. However, they are eventually going to have to extend Boldin, because he’s being paid only $2.5 million in 2008, with slight increases over the next couple of seasons.
Marques Douglas, DE, Baltimore RavensThursday 3/13, 12:56 PM CT
Defensive lineman Marques Douglas has agreed in principle to a four-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to The Santa Rosa Press Democrat. Terms of the deal are undisclosed, but Douglas is expected to start at left defensive end for the Buccaneers. Last season, Douglas ranked fourth in San Francisco with 100 tackles, and he added three sacks, 16 quarterback pressures and broke up four passes. He finished fourth in the NFL with 12 tackles for loss.
Bryant Johnson, WR, San Francisco 49ersThursday 3/13, 11:15 AM CT
Joel Segal, the agent for free-agent wide receiver Bryant Johnson, said last night that he’s in negotiations with three teams, and anticipates having a deal done by the weekend, according to FOX Sports. Buffalo, Tampa Bay and Washington are thought to be the three teams in the running for Johnson’s services.
James Hall, DE, St. Louis RamsThursday 3/13, 11:08 AM CT
With three veteran defensive ends on Buffalo's roster many thought the Bills would add a fourth end in the draft, but today’s visit by free agent defensive end James Hall indicates the possibility of an alternative approach, according to BuffaloBills.com. Hall, who was released by the St. Louis Rams earlier this month to avoid paying him a $500,000 roster bonus and $3 million in base salary, is likely viewed by the Bills as a situational pass rusher at this point in his career.
Michael Strahan, DE, New York GiantsThursday 3/13, 11:03 AM CT
Michael Strahan still hasn’t decided if he’ll play for the Giants next season, but after seeing Brett Favre and Warren Sapp pack it in after long, successful careers, he does admit that retirement crosses his mind, according to FOX Sports. "I can't say I don't love to play and don't love to see the guys," Strahan said yesterday morning at a promotional appearance in Times Square. "But when I see guys like Favre and Sapp and [Chiefs guard] Will Shields, all these guys who are players from my era, say, 'Enough's enough' ... Sometimes, you wake up and your body is hurting and you're thinking, 'Man, maybe enough is enough.' You think about it." Strahan, 36, said he won't make up his mind until after an upcoming vacation.
Dwayne Jarrett, WR, Carolina PanthersThursday 3/13, 10:54 AM CT
Police records show Carolina receiver Dwayne Jarrett's blood-alcohol level was .12 when he was arrested on a driving while impaired charge, above North Carolina's legal limit of .08, according to ESPN. Mecklenburg County court spokesman Charles Keller said Jarrett's blood-alcohol reading was in a police document delivered to the court Wednesday. A hearing involving Jarrett was continued until April 11. The 21-year-old was arrested early Tuesday in the Charlotte suburb of Mint Hill after police said he crossed the centerline and ran a red light. In related news, Panthers GM Marty Hurney has stated that D.J. Hackett’s visit on Friday, has nothing to do with the status of Jarrett.
Adam Seward, LB, Carolina PanthersThursday 3/13, 10:42 AM CT
Carolina backup middle linebacker Adam Seward, a restricted free agent, visited with New England a week ago but still hasn’t heard anything from the Patriots, according to The Herald. "There's no new news," agent Michael Hoffman said. "I'll just defer all comments to the Patriots, though the visit went well and we remain optimistic." If the Patriots signed Seward to an offer sheet and the Panthers chose not to match, Carolina would get a fifth-round pick as compensation. The Panthers probably wouldn't mind keeping Seward, if he didn't get an offer, though they gave themselves ample cover last week by signing Landon Johnson from Cincinnati. Johnson will compete for the starting weak-side job, but has played the middle before and would likely be the best bet to move there if anything happened to Jon Beason.
Chaun Thompson, LB, Houston TexansThursday 3/13, 10:33 AM CT
The Houston Texans have turned their attention to Cleveland free agent linebacker Chaun Thompson after losing Danny Clark to the New York Giants, according to The Houston Chronicle. Thompson, 27, spent the last five seasons with Cleveland, where was a reserve the last two seasons after starting the previous two years. If signed, he would compete with Zac Diles and Kevin Bentley for the strong-side role in Houston.
Chris Myers, G, Houston TexansThursday 3/13, 10:24 AM CT
The Houston Texans will host Denver free agent center Chris Myers today, according to The Houston Chronicle. The Texans are interested in Myers, who started 16 games for the Broncos last season, because they need a younger, healthy center. Incumbent Steve McKinney is 32 and coming off major knee surgery, while backup Mike Flanagan was released last month. If the Texans sign Myers, the Broncos will have a week to match the offer sheet because he’s a third-year restricted free agent. If the Broncos don’t match, they’ll receive the Texans’ sixth-round pick in next month’s draft.
Isaac Bruce, WR, San Francisco 49ersThursday 3/13, 10:16 AM CT
Isaac Bruce will not wear number 80 in 2008, according to The Mercury News. "Isaac Bruce will not be wearing No. 80," team spokesman Aaron Salkin said. "We are leaving it in honor of Jerry Rice's legacy." Jersey numbers will be assigned next week, but no sacrilege will take place. There will be no blasphemy when Bruce gets dressed for his first practice.
D.J. Hackett, WR, Carolina PanthersThursday 3/13, 10:06 AM CT
D.J. Hackett has a strong interest in playing for the Carolina Panthers, according to The Charlotte Observer. "His goal is to play for a playoff contender and he thinks the Panthers will be that with their quarterback (Jake Delhomme) healthy again," agent Kevin Robinson said. "And he really thinks Charlotte is a nice area." Hackett, who left Washington without a contract, is scheduled to meet with Tampa Bay today, and Carolina on Friday. Hackett would be a huge boost for Carolina, giving the team a legitimate No. 2 receiver opposite Steve Smith.
Aaron Walker, TE, Thursday 3/13, 10:00 AM CT
The Chicago Bears hosted tight end Aaron Walker yesterday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Walker is considered a solid blocker who would be mired on the depth chart behind Desmond Clark and Greg Olsen.
Jason Elam, K, Atlanta FalconsThursday 3/13, 9:50 AM CT
The Denver Broncos hope to resume talks with kicker Jason Elam now that he is back home from his vacation in Israel, according to the Denver Post. The two sides have general parameters in place for a multiyear deal, but there is a serious hang-up regarding guaranteed money, particularly for the 2008 season. Elam has been the Broncos' kicker since 1993, making him the team's longest-tenured player. He finished his 15th season with 15 consecutive field goals, although the Broncos have enough concern about the range of a 38-year-old kicker to want contractual protection.
Quinn Gray, QB, Kansas City ChiefsThursday 3/13, 9:44 AM CT
Quinn Gray left Alameda without a deal after interviewing with Oakland team officials yesterday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Gray remains under consideration, a league source confirmed, as the Raiders continue their search for a backup quarterback. Daunte Culpepper, who started six games for the Raiders last season, remains a possibility, especially if Oakland can't land Gray.
Dewayne Robertson, DT, Denver BroncosThursday 3/13, 9:33 AM CT
The New York Jets and Denver Broncos have resurrected trade talks that could send defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson to the Mile High City, according to Newsday. The Jets are trying to deal Robertson not only because he never truly fit in their 3-4 defensive scheme but also because he is due a $3-million roster bonus on June 1 and, under his current contract, would count more than $11 million against the salary cap in 2008. Terms of any potential deal were not known, but they could involve cornerback Domonique Foxworth, given the fact that New York has expressed interest in upgrading the defensive backfield.
Troy Brown, WR, New England PatriotsThursday 3/13, 9:16 AM CT
The New England Patriots are prepared to part ways with wide receiver Troy Brown, according to The Boston Globe. The organization recently advised Brown that he was not in their immediate plans, and is free to field offers from other teams. It's unclear if the 36-year-old Brown, who has played his entire 15-year career with the Patriots, is planning to play another season. A source close to Brown told the Boston Globe that Brown feels he can still play, and other teams have expressed interest his services.
Danny Clark, LB, New York GiantsThursday 3/13, 9:05 AM CT
Danny Clark received a two-year, $4 million contract from the New York Giants, according to Pro Football Talk. Clark will help ease the pain of free agent defections Kawika Mitchell and Reggie Torbor, while providing quality linebacker depth, along with special teams contributions.
Chaun Thompson, LB, Houston TexansThursday 3/13, 8:51 AM CT
The Cleveland Browns have begun negotiating with linebacker Chaun Thompson, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The contract, which is thought to be a two-year deal, should be completed in the very near future. Thompson, a second-round draft pick by the Browns in 2003, is expected to be a role player on defense and a key special teams contributor.
Justin Hartwig, G, Pittsburgh SteelersThursday 3/13, 8:38 AM CT
The St. Louis Rams are taking a look at center Justin Hartwig, who was released earlier in the week by the Carolina Panthers, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Hartwig started 15 games last season for the Panthers, before missing the season finale because of a knee injury.
Drew Carter, WR, Oakland RaidersThursday 3/13, 8:19 AM CT
Drew Carter signed a one-year deal worth $2 million with the Oakland Raiders, according to NFL.com. Al Davis loves speed guys, and Carter has jets in abundance, although he has never recorded more than 38 receptions, 517 yards or four scores, in any season during his four-year career in Carolina. Carter will likely lineup in the slot, with Javon Walker and Ronald Curry holding down the starting roles.
David Carr, QB, New York GiantsThursday 3/13, 8:11 AM CT
David Carr signed a one-year contract worth $1 million, and includes playing time incentives, according to the Star-Ledger. Carr, who will serve as the veteran backup to Eli Manning, is aware that he's not competing for the starting job, but is happy about the chance to get his career back on track in a positive, post-Super Bowl championship environment. He is also excited to work with Giants quarterbacks coach Chris Palmer, who was the Texans' offensive coordinator during Carr's first four seasons in Houston.
Jay Cutler, QB, Denver BroncosThursday 3/13, 8:04 AM CT
The Denver Broncos have fired general manager Ted Sundquist, according to Pro Football Talk. Head coach Mike Shanahan said in a statement released by the team: “I am grateful to Ted for all his hard work and efforts on behalf of the Broncos for the past 16 years. Now is the time for our organization to move forward and look at new directions. We are prepared to do so, starting with our ongoing draft planning, and along with continuing preparations for our mini camps and training camp.” Shanahan wields much power in personnel decisions in Denver, so in reality it will be business as usual without Sundquist.
Bryant Johnson, WR, San Francisco 49ersThursday 3/13, 1:43 AM CT
Bryant Johnson , the Cardinals No. 3 receiver, is "unlikely" to return to the club, according to the East Valley Tribune. Joel Segal, Johnson's agent, said he is negotiating with three teams and indicated he hopes to have a deal done by Friday. Steve Breaston, a kick returner and reserve receiver last season, could be a candidate for the Cardinals' next No. 3 receiver behind Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin.
Nick Barnett, LB, Green Bay PackersThursday 3/13, 1:38 AM CT
Nick Barnett entered into a plea agreement that will allow him to avoid facing a criminal conviction stemming from a nightclub incident last summer, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. A pair of misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges filed against Barnett for the incident at an Appleton nightclub the night of June 16-17 will be dropped if the Green Bay Packers linebacker meets the requirements of the agreement. Under the league's personal conduct policy, an arrest is enough for the commissioner to consider discipline. Given the result of the plea agreement, Barnett probably won't face suspension, but that is up to the discretion of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. If there is no suspension, Barnett could still be fined.
