Joni Pitkanen, D, Edmonton OilersWednesday 2/6, 11:31 PM CT
Joni Pitkanen had a goal and an assist in Wednesday's win over the Blackhawks. The Oilers need the two-time 40-point blueliner to pick up some offensive slack with Sheldon Souray likely done for the season. He has just 16 points in 39 games this season.
Alexander Ovechkin, W, Washington CapitalsWednesday 2/6, 10:19 PM CT
Alexander Ovechkin scored his league-leading 46th goal in the Capitals 4-3 win over the Flyers on Wednesday night. Ovechkin is the most explosive player in the NHL, bar none.
Peter Forsberg, C, Colorado AvalancheWednesday 2/6, 10:15 PM CT
The Red Wings made a pitch to sign free-agent center Peter Forsberg, but he let them know he is not interested in playing for Detroit, according to MLive.com. Forsberg has been skating and working out in his native Sweden and recently gave his agent the go-ahead to begin negotiating with a select group of NHL teams, which doesn't include the Red Wings. The longtime Avalanche star apparently would feel somewhat like a traitor if he joined his former club's one-time arch-rival.
Arron Asham, W, New Jersey DevilsWednesday 2/6, 9:33 PM CT
Devils defenseman Arron Asham missed his second straight game Wednesday night because of a hand injury, according to the AP.
Patrick Thoresen, W, Philadelphia FlyersWednesday 2/6, 8:35 PM CT
Patrick Thoresen, who has not been in Edmonton's lineup since January 18, was assigned by the Oilers to Springfield of the AHL for conditioning on Wednesday, according to the AP.
Scottie Upshall, W, Philadelphia FlyersWednesday 2/6, 8:33 PM CT
Flyers right wing Scottie Upshall left Wednesday's game against the Capitals in the second period with a high right ankle sprain and didn't return, according to the AP. Upshall, who has eight goals and nine assists in 38 games this season, will be re-evaluated on Thursday.
Martin Rucinsky, W, St. Louis BluesWednesday 2/6, 5:29 PM CT
After missing 16 games since separating his left shoulder, Martin Rucinsky is almost ready to return to the Blues' lineup, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He's been skating for three weeks and reported Tuesday that he's closer to being ready to return to action. "I can do everything out there," Rucinsky said. "The only thing I'm concerned about right now is just the contact, getting hit and protecting myself. Once I get over that, it's no problem." Rucinsky has good skills but hasn't been productive this season and likely won't hold any fantasy value down the stretch.
Colin Stuart, C, Atlanta ThrashersWednesday 2/6, 4:11 PM CT
The Thrashers assigned left wing Colin Stuart to Chicago of the AHL on Wednesday, according to the AP. The 25-year-old has three goals and five points in 17 games during two stints with Atlanta this season.
Greg Moore, W, New York RangersWednesday 2/6, 4:09 PM CT
The Rangers recalled left wing Greg Moore from the Hartford of the AHL on Wednesday to replace Dane Byers on the roster, according to the AP. Moore, who has not recorded a point in six games with the Rangers this season, has 18 goals and 39 points in 42 games with Hartford.
Dion Phaneuf, D, Calgary FlamesWednesday 2/6, 4:06 PM CT
Dion Phaneuf signed a $39-million, six-year contract extension with the Flames on Wednesday that will earn him an average of $6.5 million during the deal, according to the CP. "It remains very important for us to lock up our key young players," Flames GM Darryl Sutter said in a release. "Our goal with Dion was to provide an arrangement that will allow him to take his game to the next level." The hard-hitting Phaneuf has 35 points (nine goals, 26 assists) in 53 games this season and is widely regarded as the NHL's best young defenseman.
Sheldon Souray, D, Edmonton OilersWednesday 2/6, 2:08 PM CT
It's possible Sheldon Souray could opt to go ahead and have surgery on his shoulder soon so that he will be ready for next season, rather than wait until the offseason to have it and risk not being ready for the '08-'09 campaign. Souray is currently consulting an orthopedic surgeon in New Jersey, according to the Edmonton Journal. The defenseman had surgery on the shoulder last offseason, but he then separated it six games into his career with the Oilers - an injury that loosened up the previous repair job. Souray hasn't played since Jan. 26.
Jose Theodore, G, Colorado AvalancheWednesday 2/6, 11:50 AM CT
Jose Theodore is expected to return to action tonight, according to the Denver Post. He's been out since Jan. 30 with back spasms.
Andre Roy, W, Tampa Bay LightningWednesday 2/6, 11:40 AM CT
Andre Roy was not in Tuesday's lineup for disciplinary reasons. "It's just discipline reasons, I'll leave it at that," the coach told the Tampa Tribune. It's not clear if Roy will miss any more games.
Ville Peltonen, W, Florida PanthersWednesday 2/6, 11:32 AM CT
Ville Peltonen practiced again Tuesday but won't be back in the lineup until the weekend, according to the Miami Herald. He is recovering from a broken foot.
Jozef Stumpel, C, Florida PanthersWednesday 2/6, 11:28 AM CT
Jozef Stumpel will be out 4-6 weeks with a separated shoulder. He was hurt in his second game back Friday after missing seven games with the same injury. "It hurts because he's an experienced guy who can play on any line," coach Jacques Martin said in the Miami Herald.
Chad LaRose, W, Carolina HurricanesWednesday 2/6, 11:23 AM CT
Chad Larose broke his leg Tuesday on his first shift of the game when he crashed into the boards. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be out, but obviously it will be for a while. "It's a big deal," coach Peter Laviolette said in the Raleigh News-Observer. "He's got a broken leg, and he's going to be out for a while. He's an energy guy and a heart and soul guy on this team. And he'll be missed."
Scottie Upshall, W, Philadelphia FlyersWednesday 2/6, 11:17 AM CT
Scottie Upshall may have suffered a knee injury late in Tuesday's game when he collided with Atlanta's Jim Slater. Upshall, who has missed 15 games this season with injuries, will be evaluated today, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Tim Connolly, C, Buffalo SabresWednesday 2/6, 11:09 AM CT
Tim Connolly got a second opinion on his groin and hip in Denver, where the doctor determined he can't do any more damage by playing. The center will need to have surgery after the season, but he's skating with the team and could be back soon. "Some of [going to Colorado] was to confirm what we had and some of it was for peace of mind," coach Lindy Ruff said in the Buffalo News. "You're saying, 'Can I make it worse? Can it get better?' It's like a lot of people do, looking for some peace of mind. I think he found that with that second opinion."

Glen Murray, recovering from a hip flexor strain, participated in yesterday's morning skate. He didn't play last night, but he could return by the weekend, according to the Boston Globe.
