Marek Svatos, RW, Colorado AvalancheSaturday 2/9, 11:49 PM CT
Marek Svatos and Milan Hejduk both scored twice as the Avalanche overwhelmed the Canucks 6-2 on Saturday night. Svatos is now up to 24 goals on the season though he has, amazingly, only five assists. The record for most goals in a season with less than 10 assists by the way is Peter Bondra's 34 in 1994-95. Talk about a sniper. Svatos has really come on of late with 11 goals in his last 16 games just a year after he managed to light the lamp only 15 times after a 32 goal rookie season.
Roberto Luongo, G, Vancouver CanucksSaturday 2/9, 11:44 PM CT
Roberto Luongo had a simple awful game on Saturday night allowing five goals in just 22 shots in the game for a Canucks team that has won only one of its last six games. Luongo hasn't been awful of late, but he has won just two of his last nine decisions, and that certainly isn't good enough. During that stretch, he has allowed three or more goals six times, an extremely high total for a keeper who entered tonight with a 2.13 GAA.
Joe Thornton, C, San Jose SharksSaturday 2/9, 11:37 PM CT
Joe Thornton had three assists as the Sharks beat the Predators to earn HC Ron Wilson the 500th victory of his career. Thornton, who leads the NHL with 50 assists on the year, was injured late in the game when he fell hard while being slashed, but he appeared to be alright on the bench as time expired in the game. Stay tuned for any further news, but he will probably be just fine.
Vernon Fiddler, LW, Nashville PredatorsSaturday 2/9, 11:34 PM CT
Vernon Fiddler scored two goals and added an assist for the Predators but it wasn't enough as the Preds still fell to the Sharks 4-3. The real news here was the fact that Alexander Radulov lost his 8-game scoring streak. Fiddler now has nine goals and 22 points on the year, just behind his career-highs of 11 and 26, but he offers nothing from a fantasy perspective.
Jonathan Cheechoo, RW, San Jose SharksSaturday 2/9, 11:31 PM CT
Jonathan Cheechoo scored a hat-trick, the ninth of his career, in the Sharks 4-3 victory over the Predators. Cheechoo almost scored his 4th goal in the game with just over a minute left, but it was still a great outing (he also had an assist). Jonathan, who was simple horrid at the start of the season, has finally gotten over his leg issues (he had off-season surgery), and his touch has returned. Don’t look now, but there are few scorers in the NHL who have been hotter of late than Cheechoo who has been scoring like crazy since returning to Joe Thornton’s lone with nine goals in 11 games.
Manny Legace, G, St. Louis BluesSaturday 2/9, 10:04 PM CT
Manny Legace came in relief of Hannu Toivonen who allowed four goals in 15 shots on Saturday night against the Stars. Legace faired better allowing only two goals on eight shots, but Legace has been abysmal of late allowing 12 goals on his last 55 shots (.782 SV%), and the team has to be growing very worried about Legace's sudden inability to stop the puck.
Mike Smith, G, Tampa Bay LightningSaturday 2/9, 10:00 PM CT
Mike Smith, making his second straight start in place of an injured Marty Turco (neck), stopped 27 of 29 shots to pick up his 11th victory of the season. Word is that Turco isn't seriously injured, but the Stars konw they have a fine backup who can handle the work until Turco is able to go. Smith has now allowed only six goals in his last four starts.
Dion Phaneuf, D, Calgary FlamesSaturday 2/9, 9:57 PM CT
Dion Phaneuf had a Gordie Howe hat-trick on Saturday night with a goal, and assist, and a fight. Phaneuf continues to grow as a player, a scary thought considering how good he already is. He already has a career-high with 108 PIM, and with 37 points he is well on pace to match the point totals he has posted in his first two seasons (49 and 50).
Owen Nolan, RW, Minnesota WildSaturday 2/9, 9:54 PM CT
Owen Nolan scored twice for the Flames while Kristian Huselius and Alex Tanguay added two assists apiece in the Flames 4-1 win over the hated Oilers. Nolan has been a "glue" guy this season and not worthy of roster in any fantasy leagues, but he now has 14 goals and appears on his way to his first 20-goal season since 2002-03.
Cam Ward, G, Carolina HurricanesSaturday 2/9, 9:44 PM CT
Cam Ward allowed six goals on just 20 shots against the Devils before being replaced by John Grahame in the Canes 6-1 loss to the team from NJ. Ward had allowed only two goals in his last two starts, but by allowing six tonight he has permitted at least four goals twice in his last four starts continuing a season long trend of extremely uneven play.
Paul Martin, D, New Jersey DevilsSaturday 2/9, 9:40 PM CT
Paul Martin scored two goals in an NHL game for the first time to lead the Devils to victory, 6-1 over Carolina. Martin is a solid defensemen if you play in a deep league as he has five goals, 23 points and a +14, but don't expect many games like this from the steady defensemen.
Tim Thomas, G, Boston BruinsSaturday 2/9, 9:37 PM CT
Tim Thomas was torched for six goals on just 27 shots on Saturday night. Though he owns a 2.42 GAA on the season, Thomas has hit a bit of a rough patch with 13 goals allowed over his last three starts though he is in no danger, yet, of losing his role in Boston.
Richard Zednik, LW, Florida PanthersSaturday 2/9, 9:34 PM CT
Richard Zednik scored two goals to lead the Panthers to a 6-3 victory over the Bruins on Saturday night. Zednik once in a terrible funk that saw him go 20-games without a goal, now has suddenly discovered the key to lighting the lamp as he has five goals in his last four games giving the Panthers the secondary scoring they need.
Glen Murray, RW, Boston BruinsSaturday 2/9, 9:31 PM CT
Glen Murray in just his second game back on the ice after an extended time on the sidelines because of a hip injury, scored a goal and added an assist in the Bruins 6-3 loss to the Panthers. Murray has averaged 33 goals a season since joining the Bruins, but with only 10 goals this season he won't be able to match that total this season.
Cristobal Huet, G, Chicago BlackhawksSaturday 2/9, 9:26 PM CT
Cristobal Huet had a game to forget on Saturday night as he allowed three goals on four shots before being removed in the first period of the Canadiens 6-1 loss to the Senators. Huet has now allowed 12 goals in four games in February resulting in a putrid .870 SV%, well below his season long mark of .921.
Dany Heatley, LW, Ottawa SenatorsSaturday 2/9, 9:22 PM CT
Dany Heatley scored a goal and added three assists in Saturday night in the Sens 6-1 dismantling of Montreal. In two games since returning from his separated shoulder, Heatley has three goals and four assists proving yet again that he should be mentioned amongst the elite NHL scorers (he has 28 goals and 35 assists in 45 games).
Daniel Alfredsson, RW, Ottawa SenatorsSaturday 2/9, 9:18 PM CT
Daniel Alfredsson didn't skip a beat as he totaled two goals and three assists in his first game back on the ice after missing four games with a hip flexor injury. This was the second 5-point game in the last three for Alfie who has a simply massive 13 points in his last three games along with a +9 rating. Yeah, he's good.
Jason Spezza, C, Ottawa SenatorsSaturday 2/9, 9:14 PM CT
Jason Spezza had the best game of his career on Saturday night as he scored a hat-trick while adding three assists in the Senators 6-1 romp over Montreal. Spezza now has 71 points in just 50 games this season and is well on pace for his third straight season of at least 85-points despite the fact that he suited up for fewer than 70 games in each of the last two seasons.
Vincent Lecavalier, C, Tampa Bay LightningSaturday 2/9, 9:10 PM CT
Vincent Lecavalier scored his 72 point of the season and the Lightning's only goal in a loss to the Thrashers 2-1 on Saturday night. Lecavalier has basically been pretty cold since January 8th, a span of 13 games in which he has just nine points. Much more is expected from one of the league's 10 best players.
Alexei Zhitnik, D, Atlanta ThrashersSaturday 2/9, 9:06 PM CT
Alexei Zhitnik, mired in one of his worst season's, might have turned things around on Saturday night as he scored the game-winning goal in OT to lead the Thrashers to a 2-1 victory over the Lightning. Zhitnik, who scored 27 points last season, only has six points this year and has been the subject of trade rumors. Still, the Thrashers have to love the effort the received here, though Alexei still has a long ways to go to become a useful fantasy defensemen.
Tim Connolly, C, Buffalo SabresSaturday 2/9, 7:58 PM CT
Tim Connolly will return to action on Sunday this after missing 13 games due to hip and groin injuries. Despite all the injuries, Connolly has continued to put up points for the Sabres and has five goals and 24 assists in 34 games. AP
Bill Guerin, RW, New York IslandersSaturday 2/9, 7:54 PM CT
Bill Guerin scored a goal and added an assist in the Isles loss on Saturday night, 4-3 to the Wild in OT. Guerin is now up to 19 goals on the season after a slow start to the season that say him sitting on five goals after 26 games.
Brian Rolston, LW, New Jersey DevilsSaturday 2/9, 7:51 PM CT
Brian Rolston scored two goals on Saturday night to help lead the Wild to a 4-3 OT victory over the Isles in a game in which Brett Burns scored the game-winner. Rolston has now scored a goal in seven of his last eight games to push his season total to 20, the third straight year he has reached that mark since joining the Wild.
Ryan Shannon, RW, Ottawa SenatorsSaturday 2/9, 7:29 PM CT
Ryan Shannon was recalled by the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday and figures to play against the Avalanche on Saturday night. "It took a while to get back," said Shannon. "Now, (the knee) feels good." Shannon had been in the minors since October, but with Brendan Morrison out after wrist surgery, the team needs depth up the middle. AP
Daniel Alfredsson, RW, Ottawa SenatorsSaturday 2/9, 7:24 PM CT
Daniel Alfredsson, who had missed six of the Senators last nine games and the last four with a strained hip flexor, scored a goal and added an assist in the first period on Saturday night. Alfredsson is one of the 10 most complete players in the NHL though its obviously his substantial offensive exploits that draw him the most attention (he now has 34 goals and 70 points in just 49 games).
Dominik Hasek, G, Detroit Red WingsSaturday 2/9, 5:13 PM CT
Dominik Hasek stopped 22 of 25 shots on Saturday in the Red Wings 3-2 OT loss to the Maple Leafs ending a personal 5-game winning streak. Despite the loss, Hasek has now gone 20-straight games without allowing more than three goals.
Nik Antropov, C, Toronto Maple LeafsSaturday 2/9, 5:08 PM CT
Nik Antropov scored the game winning goal at 1:02 of the OT to lift the Leafs to a 3-2 victory over the Wings. After scoring eight goals in his first 13 games, Antropov has skidded to just 10 goals in his last 27 games with only four in his last 23 games.
Stephen Valiquette, G, New York RangersSaturday 2/9, 4:31 PM CT
Stephen Valiquette giving starter Henrik Lundqvist a rare game off stopped all 31 Flyers shots that he faced Saturday for his second shutout of the season in only his eight start. Lundqvist will continue to receive almost every start for the Blueshirts, but the team has to feel very comfortable with its backup at this point who improved his record to 4-3-1 on the year.
Joffrey Lupul, RW, Philadelphia FlyersSaturday 2/9, 3:15 PM CT
As expected, Joffrey Lupul returned to the ice for Saturday's game. He took three shots on goal but failed to register a point. Lupul had been out for over a month with a bruised spinal cord.
Evgeni Malkin, C, Pittsburgh PenguinsSaturday 2/9, 3:10 PM CT
Evgeni Malkin lit the lamp twice and added an assist on Saturday. Since moving to center the Pens' top line, following Sidney Crosby's ankle sprain, Malkin has seven goals and 10 assists in nine games, including four consecutive multi-point games. The young star now has 69 points in 55 games this season.
Martin Erat, RW, Nashville PredatorsSaturday 2/9, 1:02 PM CT
Martin Erat is listed as questionable for Saturday's game, according to the Tennessean. He exited the Preds' last game on Thursday with a back spasms.
Paul Stastny, C, Colorado AvalancheSaturday 2/9, 12:44 PM CT
Paul Stastny is listed as questionable for Saturday's game, according to the Rocky Mountain News. "It's going to be exciting when I do get back out there," said Stastny. He's been recovering from an appendectomy.
Samuel Pahlsson, C, Anaheim DucksSaturday 2/9, 12:38 PM CT
Samuel Pahlsson had been expected to return to game action on Friday, but he ended up being held out. He's now slated to get back on the ice to face the Red Wings on Sunday, according to the LA Times. He's missed 21 games due to an abdominal strain, so let's hope he actually gets back in the mix tomorrow.
Wade Redden, D, New York RangersSaturday 2/9, 12:21 PM CT
Sens GM Bryan Murray told Wade Redden he had the chance to be traded Friday -- the Sharks are believed to be interested -- but Redden said he wouldn't waive his no-trade clause, according to the Ottawa Citizen. He'll be an unrestricted free agent at season's end and is unlikely to be back with the only team for which he's played, but it sounds like he's going to finish the season with the Sens.
Dennis Seidenberg, D, Carolina HurricanesSaturday 2/9, 12:12 PM CT
Dennis Seidenberg is not expected to return to action until at least Thursday, and Saturday appears to be a more likely target date, according to the Raleigh News & Observer. Seidenberg continues to deal with an ankle injury.
Matt Cullen, C, Carolina HurricanesSaturday 2/9, 12:09 PM CT
Matt Cullen reported progress in his recovery from vision problems, but he remains out at least another week, according to the Raleigh News & Observer. The Hurricanes continue to deny that he has post-concussion syndrome, but his vision problems must be resolved before he can play again.
Marcel Hossa, RW, Phoenix CoyotesSaturday 2/9, 12:04 PM CT
Marcel Hossa's ailing back is feeling well enough now that he can practice, according to the New York Daily News. However, Hossa is not expected to return to game action this weekend, so keep him on your benches for now.
Maxim Afinogenov, RW, Buffalo SabresSaturday 2/9, 12:00 PM CT
The Sabres currently have no timetable set for when Maxim Afinogenov will be able to return from his torn groin muscle, according to the Buffalo News. He aggravated the injury on Monday and is not skating with the team.
Tim Connolly, C, Buffalo SabresSaturday 2/9, 11:57 AM CT
Apparently, there's a chance that Tim Connolly could return to action on Sunday, according to the Buffalo News. If he can't get on the ice for that game, coach Lindy Ruff said the center almost certainly will be ready by Tuesday or Wednesday. Connolly has now missed 13 games due to his groin and hip injuries and eventually will require surgery.
