Ponikarovsky was injured when he was smeared against the unforgiving Air Canada Centre boards by Washington defenceman Steve Eminger.

Marc-Andre Fleury, out since Dec. 6 with a high ankle sprain, is expected to be in goal for the Penguins' Wilkes-Barre minor-league team tomorrow. He is scheduled to stay with the Baby Penguins for at least three games, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "It could be a week, could be two weeks," GM Ray Shero said. "We'll see. [Goalie coach] Gilles Meloche is going down and will be with him most of the time. We'll just see how [Fleury] reacts. Not so much his wins and losses, but his conditioning, his timing, how he's handling the puck, the whole getting-back-into-the-game routine. When he feels comfortable, we'll make a decision as to what's best for him and best for us."

Chris Simon could be back at the Islanders practice soon. He's been out since Dec. 15, when he deliberately kicked Jarkko Ruutu, resulting in a 30-game suspension. Simon can't return to game action until Feb. 21, according to the NY Post. "We'll discuss it," coach Ted Nolan said. "He's been working out and he could possibly return [this week]."
