Alexander Ovechkin, W, Washington CapitalsFriday 3/14, 11:47 PM CT
Alexander Ovechkin had a power-play goal and an assist in Washington's 4-1 win Friday over Atlanta, according to the Associated Press. It moved him to 99 points this season, but also gave him the highest goal total among European-born players in their first three seasons. His 155 career goals are also the third-most in a player's first three seasons in NHL history.
Mats Sundin, C, Toronto Maple LeafsFriday 3/14, 8:19 PM CT
Following a report from earlier in the week, Mats Sundin is listed as questionable for the Maple Leafs' battle with the Buffalo Sabres, according to SLAM Sports. Sundin suffered a groin strain earlier this week against the Philadelphia Flyers. He was able to leave the ice under his own power, but his status moving forward remains a questions mark.
Ray Whitney, W, Carolina HurricanesFriday 3/14, 8:14 PM CT
Hurricane forward Ray Whitney will have ankle surgery on Saturday and could miss the rest of the regular season, according to ESPN.com. The Hurricanes announced during the first period of a game at Buffalo on Friday night that Whitney might miss three weeks. Second on the team with 59 points (25 goals, 34 assists), Whitney has missed six games with a sore ankle, the result of an infection from earlier this season. The surgery is required to remove a damaged bursa sac. This is a significant blow for a team already missing captain Rod Brind'Amour, out indefinitely following reconstructive knee surgery last month. With the playoffs right around the corner, losing Whitney may be an obstacle the team struggles to overcome at the most competitive time of year.
Sidney Crosby, C, Pittsburgh PenguinsFriday 3/14, 3:10 PM CT
Still dealing with soreness in his high-ankle sprain, Sidney Crosby will sit out at least the next three games, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I'm just going to take a week here to give it more time to rest," Crosby said. "It's just one of those nagging things. I know what's coming up in the future, and I want to make sure I give it the best possible chance to be strong." The Pens only real goal with Crosby is to be sure he's fully healthy come playoff time, so they'll give him a little extra time off and hope he's ready to hit the ice in about a week.
Dominik Hasek, G, Detroit Red WingsFriday 3/14, 3:00 PM CT
Dominik Hasek skated Friday and said he felt much better, according to the Detroit Free Press. Barring a setback, it sounds like Hasek should be back between the pipes at some point this weekend. He was unavailable for Thursday's contest due to a back injury.
Patrik Elias, W, New Jersey DevilsFriday 3/14, 2:55 PM CT
Patrik Elias was struck by a shot on his left kneecap during Thursday's game, according to the Bergen Record. "It was just right on the bone," Elias said. "We'll see how bad it is [today] when we get to Colorado. I don't know what is going to happen." It sounds like Elias could miss some action, but we'll have to wait to see if he can tough it out.
Zdeno Chara, D, Boston BruinsFriday 3/14, 2:51 PM CT
Although coach Claude Julien said the chances of Zdeno Chara playing this weekend are "slim," he added that he "wouldn't count him out," according to the Boston Globe. Chara is dealing with an upper-body injury.
