Sean Avery, W, Dallas StarsTuesday 3/18, 10:45 PM CT
Sean Avery scored two goals in the Rangers' 5-2 win over Pittsburgh. Avery had been on a bit of a cold spell but could see the start of more productive games ahead.
Rick Nash, W, Columbus Blue JacketsTuesday 3/18, 10:14 PM CT
Rick Nash , recently appointed to team captain, made good on the role of leader in Columbus' 3-0 win over Calgary. Nash scored a goal and earned two assists on the night, giving him a team-leading 64 points this season. Nash is a star with a ton of good years ahead, and he's served fantasy owners well this season.
Kari Lehtonen, G, Atlanta ThrashersTuesday 3/18, 10:09 PM CT
In need of a positive note, Kari Lehtonen withstood an absolute flurry of shots in the Thrashers' disappointing 2-3 loss to Philadelphia this evening. Lehtonen dismissed 44 of 47 shots heaved at the net, but his performance fell just short as Atlanta managed just 19 SOG of their own. This has been a tough campaign for Lehtonen in '08, but this game shows the talent is there for better days.
Ilya Kovalchuk, W, Atlanta ThrashersTuesday 3/18, 10:05 PM CT
Ilya Kovalchuk continues to work as the catalyst for offense in Atlanta, netting a goal and an assist in the Thrashers' 2-3 loss to Philadelphia. Tonight's performance gives Kovalchuk 83 points on the season, one of few highlights for the Thrashers this season.
Alexander Ovechkin, W, Washington CapitalsTuesday 3/18, 9:57 PM CT
Alexander Ovechkin netted his 58th goal on the season in the Capitals' 4-2 win over the Nashville Predators. Ovechkin also tallied two assists, putting him at 102 total points on the season. This has been an absolutely superb campaign for the young Russian and he's only gotten better since the Caps gave him an outrageous contract extension. Thus far, it's hard to argue that he's not worth every penny.
Paul Kariya, W, St. Louis BluesTuesday 3/18, 9:50 PM CT
Paul Kariya failed to score for a 17th straight game, coming up short in the Blues' 4-3 shootout win over Montreal. The scoreless streak dates back to the Blues' last road win on February 14th. While he has seven assists over that span, the Blues (and fantasy owners) are finding the growing pains of frustration hard to ignore. Kariya was once a scoring machine, but it appears his game has fallen flat and the time to seek better fantasy options has come.
Teppo Numminen, D, Buffalo SabresTuesday 3/18, 6:39 PM CT
Top defenseman Teppo Numminen has reportedly rejoined the Buffalo Sabres and may soon be allowed back on the ice, according to SI.com. Coach Lindy Ruff said the training staff is evaluating Numminen's condition, but it was too early to determine whether he'll be cleared to play before the end of the regular season. Numminen had surgery in September to repair a faulty valve, which was discovered during a routine checkup ahead of his 19th NHL season and third with Buffalo. The Finnish player has had a heart murmur since childhood. He was diagnosed with a dilated aorta in March 2004, when he was playing for the Dallas Stars, and missed five games before he was cleared to play. Getting the veteran d-man back would be uplifting for the Sabres as the playoffs loom. We expect to hear official news on his playing status in the days ahead.
Rick DiPietro, G, New York IslandersTuesday 3/18, 6:33 PM CT
Goalie Rick DiPietro has undergone an MRI, results of which will be announced Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. The area in question is DiPietro's hip, the same hip injured during the skill competition at this year's All-Star Game. Wade Dubielewicz got the start against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night, and Joey MacDonald was recalled from Bridgeport of the American Hockey League to serve as backup.
Patrik Elias, W, New Jersey DevilsTuesday 3/18, 3:10 PM CT
Patrik Elias (knee) did not practice on Tuesday and is questionable for tomorrow night's game, this according to The Star-Ledger. "It's a big game. No question I'd love to play. I just wasn't feeling great today, especially when I put weight on it." Asked if Elias will face the Rangers, Sutter said: "I have no idea. Unless he skates (today), he won't." Elias has 50 points in 67 games this season.
Colin White, D, New Jersey DevilsTuesday 3/18, 3:06 PM CT
Colin White (upper body soreness) practiced on Tuesday and coach Sutter said he has "a better chance of playing than not playing," this according to The Star Ledger. White has no fantasy value with only eight points on the season.
Mats Sundin, C, Toronto Maple LeafsTuesday 3/18, 2:47 PM CT
Mats Sundin, who suffered groin injury March 12 in Philadelphia, will be inactive Tuesday night with what the team is calling a torn groin muscle, according to the Toronto Sun. The Leafs "hope" to have Sundin back by in the lineup by the weekend for their rematch against the Sabres in Buffalo on Friday. Coach Paul Maurice revealed yesterday that Sundin has a slight groin tear, an injury that normally takes at least 10-14 days to heal. Sundin skated for about 22 minutes prior to the Leafs practice at Lakeshore Lions Arena yesterday but isn't ready to take the ice at full speed.
Mason Raymond, W, Vancouver CanucksTuesday 3/18, 2:42 PM CT
TSN.ca reports that the Vancouver Canucks win over the Phoenix Coyotes Monday night was a costly one. Mason Raymond was lost mid-way through the third, when he was hit knee-on-knee by Coyotes defenceman Keith Ballard. The report notes that Raymond will miss four weeks with an MCL sprain. The winger had 21 points in 49 games this season.
Ken Klee, D, Atlanta ThrashersTuesday 3/18, 10:09 AM CT
Ken Klee has been ruled out for Tuesday's game, this according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The injury is not considered serious. The report noted that Mark Popovic will take Klee's spot on the blueline.
Bobby Allen, D, Boston BruinsTuesday 3/18, 9:43 AM CT
Bobby Allen is not expected to play again until the team's postseason schedule, this according to the Boston Herald. Allen's zero points and zero assists in 19 games this year is a solid indication of his fantasy value.
Chad LaRose, W, Carolina HurricanesTuesday 3/18, 9:40 AM CT
Chad LaRose took to the ice on Monday for the first time since breaking his leg in February 5th, this according to the Raleigh News and Observer. LaRose skated for only 15 minutes and will be handled gingerly due to the nature of the injury. There is still a chance that LaRose could miss the rest of the season if he doesn't show progress in the next two weeks.
Nik Antropov, W, Toronto Maple LeafsTuesday 3/18, 7:11 AM CT
Toronto's Nik Antropov left Saturday's game with a knee injury, according to the Toronto Star, and followed that up with a short practice session on Monday. Antropov lasted only three minutes in practice on Monday but the team still won't say whether the knee injury is a sprain or a bruise. Regardless, Antropov won't play Tuesday versus the Islanders. This proposes a personnel problem for the Maple Leafs. With Mats Sundin also out with a groin, the team will be without their top two scorers.
R.J. Umberger, C, Columbus Blue JacketsTuesday 3/18, 7:05 AM CT
R.J. Umberger, who sprained his knee in Sunday's game, will in fact miss at least two weeks to a sprained knee. The 25-year-old was maturing, and with 49 points in 71 contests so far this year, he will be missed. The Flyers forward benefited with Mike Richards was healthy and with Umberger's expected absence, look for Scott Upshall to return to active duty after being a healthy scratch on Sunday.
