Astros C Hall to have shoulder surgery Kissimmee, FL (Sports Network) - Houston Astros catcher Toby Hall has decided to undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder. Hall met with members of Houston's medical staff and Astros general manager Ed Wade to discuss options after an MRI exam revealed the severity of the problem. "Toby and our medical staff were in complete agreement that the best way to get him healthy would be to surgically repair the shoulder, which would mean that he wouldn't be throwing for about four months," said Wade. "For the sake of Toby's future, everyone agreed that surgery was the appropriate course of action." Hall experienced right shoulder discomfort soon after reporting to spring training earlier this month. The Astros said past medical records indicated that the 33-year-old veteran had suffered a dislocated right shoulder during spring training with the Chicago White Sox in 2007 and he decided not to have surgery. The Astros signed Hall to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training as a non-roster player and are likely to void the contract. They will, however, give him the option of receiving treatment from the medical staff until his surgery is scheduled. Last year with the White Sox, Hall played in 41 games as the backup for A.J. Pierzynski and hit .260 with two homers and seven runs batted in. Lifetime, with Tampa Bay, Los Angeles and the White Sox, Hall has 46 homers, 269 RBI and a .262 batting average. |
