Rangers sign Hamilton to one-year deal Surprise, AZ (Sports Network) - The Texas Rangers signed outfielder Josh Hamilton to a one-year, $555,000 contract on Wednesday. An All-Star last year, the 27-year-old Hamilton could now work toward a long- term deal with the Rangers. Hamilton, who was chosen with the first overall pick in the 1999 draft by Tampa Bay, broke into the majors with Cincinnati in 2007 and was not eligible for free agency. He was traded to Texas before having a blockbuster season in 2008 when he hit .304 with 32 homers and 130 RBI. Not only were his season stats impressive, but Hamilton's 2008 campaign may be most remembered for what he did at the Home Run Derby. He hit 28 home runs in the opening round, to break Bobby Abreu's record of 24 set in 2005. Hamilton was one of 10 players signed by the Rangers on Wednesday. Others were infielders Chris Davis, German Duran and Travis Metcalf, pitchers Thomas Diamond, Eric Hurley, Warner Madrigal and Guillermo Moscoso, and catchers Max Ramirez and Taylor Teagarden. |
