Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - The John Russell era could very well extend into 2010, as the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that they exercised the 2010 club option on their manager.

The announcement was made on Saturday morning by senior vice president and general manager Neal Huntington.

Russell, the 38th manager in franchise history, will begin his second campaign at the helm after guiding the Pirates to a 67-95 mark last season.

"JR met or exceeded expectations in his first year as the Pirates manager," said Huntington. "His club worked hard to play the game properly and battled from the first out until the last. His leadership, knowledge, attention to detail, ability to see the big picture and passion for things being done the right way made him the ideal choice as our manager a year ago and made the decision to pick up his option for 2010 an easy decision."

Russell played in 448 big-league games with Philadelphia (1984-88), Atlanta (1988) and Texas (1990-93) and caught Nolan Ryan's sixth career no-hitter on June 11, 1990.

As a minor league skipper, Russell posted a record of 666-667.
