Raiders release S Wilson Alameda, CA (Sports Network) - The Oakland Raiders released safety Gibril Wilson on Friday, a year after signing him to a lucrative contract. Wilson signed a six-year contract in late February 2008, worth up to $39 million. But after a 2008 season in which the 27-year-old safety played in all 16 games, posting two interceptions, 1 1/2 sacks and a career-high 128 tackles, Wilson was cut. The move comes a day after the Raiders made two big signings. Oakland inked cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to a three-year contract worth a reported minimum of $45 million, and punter Shane Lechler to a four-year deal. Wilson spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the New York Giants, who selected him in the fifth round of the 2004 draft. In 68 career games, Wilson has 13 interceptions, 7 1/2 sacks and 493 tackles. Friday, Oakland also released defensive end Kalimba Edwards and wide receiver Ronald Curry. Edwards, a seven-year NFL veteran, played in 13 games for the Raiders last season and accumulated five sacks with one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Curry, who has spent all seven of his NFL seasons with Oakland, caught 19 passes for 181 yards and two scores in 10 games for the Raiders last season. Curry had posted back-to-back 700-yard seasons in 2006-07, making 117 total catches for 1,444 yards and five touchdowns. |
